President’s Message

This column is written about a month before you receive your newsletter. As I write this, it is the first week of November and Southern California is finally getting its first taste of fall. Two days ago the temperature was hovering in the 85 degree range and we thought it would never cool off. Then today was the first day we didn’t crack 70 degrees outside and we are getting a small amount of much needed rain. As we sit through the drought, I watch the flooding in Texas and wonder why we can’t even out our need for water so that we aren’t always vacillating between drought and floods. Whenever I see bad weather I wonder how our members are coping. I pray that our members in the severe weather make it out with minimal damage. We had hoped for a Disney themed convention in Buena Vista the year after next, but The Disney Company will only allow such collaboration if we stay at a Disney property. The board has shifted to plan B, so look for the theme to be revealed at the banquet in Reston. We are looking towards returning to Atlanta in 2019, as that will be our 45th reunion. The Waverly hotel where we stayed for two conventions is no longer an option. Apparently the Braves stadium has been moved to the north end of the city, and the room rates at the hotel during the summer are now out of our comfort zone. In fact, we are having a difficult time holding room rates to under $100 per night. With the improvement in the business climate, we knew that this time would come. The board will do everything we can to hold the rates down to an acceptable level. By the time you read this, we should have some of the Red Barrel magazines up for viewing on our site. The Coca-Cola Company does not want these to be copied or reprinted, so our webmaster is working to make them viewable only. We were also

given 255 issues, but some of the magazines have yet to be scanned by the archives department of The Coca-Cola Company. We have been assured that we will have access to the complete set of magazines. One of the nice things about writing this column is that your mistakes are not overlooked. I love spell check but it doesn’t always help when a word can be spelled a couple of different ways. In my last column, I talked about the country of Colombia but I misspelled it Columbia. I need to remind myself that Colombia is the country and Columbia is the record and movie company. Thank you for correcting me and now you know that the only thing that kept me out of college was high school. One housekeeping note for chapters ordering merchandise from Summit, Spread the Red or any other authorized supplier. Some of the chapters are ordering directly without contacting our artwork coordinator. Currently our artwork coordinator is Hilda King and any chapter orders for merchandise are to go through her even if there is no additional artwork attached. We do not want to jeopardize our good relationship with The Coca-Cola Company, so I encourage you to order merchandise through the proper channels. On behalf of the entire board, I hope you have a Merry Christmas. May everyone have a blessed holiday season and a great 2016.

Close your eyes and imagine what Santa looks like. A big, jolly fellow with a red suit and white beard? That is the Santa as we know today. It is well-known that Haddon Sundblom was the creator of this image in 1931. How did Santa exist before then? What did he look like? He was depicted as everything from a tall man, to a scary looking elf. He wore a bishops robe and a huntsman’s animal skin. Check out this picture from Harper’s Weekly of another version of Santa. Thomas Nast created a Santa in 1862 and was used for 30 years. Coca-Cola began advertising with Santa in the 1920’s in magazines, such as in The Saturday Evening Post. In 1930, Fred Mizen painted a Santa in department store which appeared in The Saturday Evening Post, December of that year.

In 1931, The Company was using D’Arcy Advertising Agency with Archie Lee as the creative director for the Coca-Cola account. He wanted a wholesome, friendly Santa and he turned to Artist Haddon Sundblom. This started the phenomen we know today. Sundblom created a modern version of St. Nick that is dear to our hearts. He still wears the

red suit, with a jolly demeanor. From 1931 to 1964, new images of Santa were created by Sundblom. Follow his creations throughout the years:

1942. He was a “sprite”, an elf-like creature and was used before Sprite was developed in the 1960’s. 1944 was also the year when Coke was trademarked as the same as Coca-Cola through a series of ads.

1945 They Knew What I Wanted

As WWII was ending, the soldiers returned home with a welcome with a Coke from Santa.

1949 Travel Refreshed

Even Santa travels make him thirsty. All 8 reindeer are not clear, the reference to the poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” is obvious with Santa again getting help from the Sprite Boy.

1951 Now It’s My Turn

Sundblom had been using photos of himself for this painting. He even used the artist-popular three-quarter view angle.

1952 …and Now the Gift for Thirst

Santa painted his neighbor from Tucson, AZ. Lani and Sancy Nason were sisters but Sundblom changed the sex to a male to create a more balanced scene. The Nasons were used in 1952 and 1953.

1956 Sparkling HolidaysThis version is a cleaner version of the 1953 artwork. The work bench and helpers were taken out. A new ad agency, McCann-Erickson, produced this new image.


1959 Refreshing Surprise

This artwork represents a change in the Santa role in the artwork. He is no longer the main subject, but he still plays an important part of the Christmas scene with elves, children, pets and toys.

1961 When Friends Drop In

While Santa is quietly slipping in and out of your home, he is tries to quiet a barking schnauzer to avoid waking a sleeping family.

Santa shows his child-like personality with his electric train and a helicopter. Helicopters were invented in 1940.

Remember Jimmy from the 1932 ad? He is at it again. Jimmy leaves Santa a note and Coke. In 2001, an animated commercial was created by Alexandre Petrov brought Santa to life.

This is the last year the traditional Sundblom Santa was used in advertising. He still lives on through all of us!

Santa facts you may or may not know:

Santa’s belt is shown backwards in one year.

He appeared without his wedding ring (trouble in the North Pole?).

The dog used in 1964 was actually a gray poodle, but it was changed to black to stand out more.

The Santa that Sundblom created was used for advertising in magazines, billboards, posters, calendars, store displays and plush toys. Do you have a Santa collection? Please send me pictures of your collection, how you display them outside of the Christmas season....

It was announced in last month’s issue of the newsletter that you could now make your reservation for the 2016 TCCCC convention in Reston, Virginia. After several members made their reservation we learned that they were told the rooms were full for certain nights and that they would have to pay a higher rate than the $99 price quoted in our contract. They were then asked if they had a different discount source they would like to use to reserve the room such as AAA or Costco for a rate of $129 to $139. When using a different discount code for the nights you book your room nights will not be credited to the Club’s room block. This could cause us not to meet the required number of rooms to fulfill the nights we originally contracted with the hotel. In speaking with our hotel representative, I was assured that this glitch has been fixed and that there are still rooms available on all nights. I have also recently learned that someone was told parking would be $25 a day. In the terms of the contract, parking and internet are free to attendees and I will also bring this to our hotel representative’s attention so that no one is charged. When booking your reservation you are going through a call center and sometime misinformation is given out. In booking your room, if you are asked to use a different code and pay a higher rate or quoted any additional fees, please let me know. I can then speak with our hotel representative to solve these issues before we arrive. You can reach me by email at [email protected] or call me at 407-814-7430. We are working hard to have the registration form ready to appear in the January issue of the newsletter and think our 2016 convention will be a fun one for all. On a recent trip to Oroville, Calif., I acquired a set of 1994 World Cup Coca-Cola bottles for $5 at a thrift store. Quite a lucky find, I thought, since I have become enveloped in everything soccer since meeting my boyfriend, Mark. I never knew how exhilarating the sport could be! In June, we traveled to Canada for the Women's World Cup in Vancouver, B.C., where I also got my hands on a couple Coke

and Diet Coke bottles commemorating the event. Unfortunately, they were required to open the bottles as they were considered "samples" (pleading and even showing them my recently inked tattoo didn't help me out). These bottles from major soccer games made me grateful that I have a

newfound interest in something that is sponsored by my longtime interest, Coca-Cola. When I heard of the major scandals occurring among top FIFA officials in the soccer world, I knew this would affect Coke as a sponsor. Even I, upset at the prospect of affording a trip to a country such as Qatar for a World Cup match, eagerly wished for Coca-Cola to pull their sponsorship or call for some of these top officials to relinquish their power. It took a little while, but it finally happened: Coca-Cola, along with other sponsors, called for FIFA President Sepp Blatter to stand down. I was overjoyed at this, sending my approval through social media. Coca-Cola was once again leading the ranks in initiating change. Purchasing those 1994 bottles in Oroville reminded me of how much things have changed. The world has changed drastically, but Coke does not follow: It leads. As I mentioned in my last article, Coca-Cola reminds me of the happiness in the world whenever I look at my collection. Their sponsorship of sporting events like the World Cup games and the Olympics alongside being a founding partner of the Special

Olympics is inspiring. In Canada, Coca-Cola took part in every event that promoted the U.S. Women's World Cup team. They even set up a photo booth at the American Outlaws supporter group pregame party, handing out Coke prizes to everyone who would share their crazy, Coke-themed background pictures online.

The Coca-Cola banners at all these events caught my eye every time. They remind me that they might not be sponsoring just for the sake of money, but for the sake of motivating people of all ages to get up and live exciting, active lifestyles. I know these events bring me happiness, and having Coca-Cola all around me makes the environment that much more exciting. Being able to attain a bottle made especially for the Canadian World Cup or any major event creates the scavenger hunt of a lifetime for me. Wonderful of Chapters Tar Heel Chapter By Lori Hedrick, Newsletter Editor

The Tar Heel Chapter of the Coca-Cola Collectors Club currently has about 43 members and has bi-monthly meetings on the third Saturday every other month (Feb, April, June, Aug, Oct, Dec). The group usually meets at restaurants that have a private room to have dinner, then conduct the meeting. Meeting locations move

around to different cities in central North Carolina since the membership base is spread out, we try to meet in different areas so no one person has to drive a great distance to attend a meeting each time. For example, in February the meeting may be 5 miles from one member, then the April meeting may be 50 miles from that member, but only 5 miles from another member’s location. The meetings begin with a dinner and then followed by a business session. During the business session the President makes any announcements regarding

the club, upcoming conventions, news about members, etc. A report is given from our Treasurer as well as a report from our Flower Fund manager. After all the business is conducted, a Coca-Cola related program is given and members have a chance to show their latest Coke finds in the show-n-tell presentation. At the end of the meeting door prize drawings are conduced and there are usually a lot of items that are available to win. At each meeting a different topic or activity related to Coca-Cola is presented to the group. This past year there have been programs on: reports on the national convention that members had attended, played Coca-Cola trivia games and bingo where Coke items were given as prizes and have even toured vending machine museums that are in the area. At a recent meeting there

was presentation by a vending machine restoration expert who brought 2 vintage restored machines with him to the meeting. He described the process on how to restore a machine and how machines can be customized as well. There has been presentation by a club member that participated in an online auction of items from a Coca-Cola Bottling Plant that had closed several years ago. The presentation was about the items that were in the warehouse that were waiting for pick-up at the end of the auction. The member took

several pictures and of the items that had been auctioned off when she went to pick up her winning items and shared the information the Club.

At the Christmas meeting the group always plays “Dirty Santa”. This is a game where all the members bring a wrapped gift and draw numbers. Number 1 is the first to pick a wrapped

box and then opens the present. Number 2 can then pick a new gift or “steal” the gift from Number 1 making that person have to choose another wrapped present. A gift can be stolen up to 3 times before its dead and remains with that last 3rd steal. This goes on until the last person picks their gift. Our group has a lot of fun “stealing” gifts from each other! Another fun activity is the show-n-tell portion of each meeting where someone will bring

in a Coca-Cola item that they recently acquired that is unique or rare. The items range from vintage Coke trays to Coke OPI nail polish, as long as it is Coke related we want to see it! Visit the National Zoo located at 3001 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington DC 20008. From our hotel, the hotel will provide you a ride to the Silver Line Metro. Take this to the Red Line and head in the direction of Shady Grove. There are two exits where you need to exit to visit the zoo. If you take the Woodley Park exit, you will need to walk uphill, but it is a flat walk from the Cleveland Park stop. If you prefer to drive there, the entrance is free but there is a parking fee of $22. Because this is a popular destination, it is suggested to arrive early (8am) or take the metro. The hours for July 2016 will be: Grounds open 8 am – 7 pm Visitor Center & Exhibit Buildings 9 am – 6 pm Concessions 9 am – 5 pmAnimals and Exhibits Cheetahs, zebras, gazelles, oryx, Przewalski’s horses, lions, tigers, bears and many more animals can be seen outside while many other animals are inside in air-conditioned buildings. If the Panda house is open, best time to visit is between 8am-2pm. Because Mei Xiang (adult female) recently gave birth to Bei Bei (baby male), the Panda House is closed. If the house is still closed in July, you can see them on the panda cams. You can watch them here from home: (http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/WebCams/giant-panda.cfm), and possibly see Tian Tian (adult male) and Bao Bao (juvenile female) outside. There is usually a long line so arrive here early to make sure you get a chance to see them. Native to central China, giant pandas have come to symbolize endangered species. As few as 1,864 giant pandas live in their native habitat, while another 300 pandas live in zoos and breeding centers around the world. You can also download the National Zoo app to help you navigate within the zoo.

For a great and inspiring aerial view of the • city, visit the Old Post Office Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue. Take the elevator to the top of the 315-foot-tall clock tower to enjoy 360-degree views of downtown DC.

Learn about history at the • National Museum of American History (14th St. & Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20013). See the Star-Spangled Banner flag, which inspired our national anthem, explore the history of the American presidency and check out Dorothy’s red slippers in the permanent exhibition National Treasures of Popular Culture.

Step foot inside the • National Building Museum (401 F St. NW, Washington, DC 20001) and admire the massive great hall. Take a photo standing beside one of the 75-foot-tall Corinthian columns for a sense of scale of the enormous atrium. In addition to free admission into the hall, look for occasional free festival days. Admission is required for galleries and exhibits.

The Board is currently working on a tour of highlights to see in the DC area. I will start to describe some of the places of interest you will see on this trip. This tour will be on Sunday, July 3, 2016. The tour will start at 1pm from the hotel so you will want to make sure you arrive early to the hotel to check in.

Washington Monument One of the nation’s most recognizable structures, the Washington Monument is located between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, and just east of the Reflecting Pool. The obelisk-

shaped memorial is made up of marble, granite and bluestone gneiss. It is the world’s tallest structure made of stone and the tallest obelisk, at 555 feet tall. The Washington Monument was built to honor George Washington, the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first president of the United States. The structure was designed by Robert Mills, with construction beginning in 1848. Construction was halted from 1854 to 1877, due to the Know Nothing Party’s rise to control of the Washington National Monument Society through an illegal election, lack of funding and the Civil War. It was completed in 1884 by Thomas Casey and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and an elevator was added to the monument in 1889, which shuttles tourists to the top of the monument to this day. A restoration project was carried out from 1998 to 2002, and a $15 million renovation was completed from 2004-2005. The monument officially reopened on April 1, 2005 until August 22, 2011 when an earthquake damaged the granite and marble structure. On May 12, 2014, the monument reopened to the public.

Lincoln Memorial The bus tour will stop here so you can climb the steps to be in awe of this magnificent sculpture. Built in white stone with 36 iconic columns, The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most recognized structures in the United States. The memorial is an example in Neoclassical architecture. It features a solitary, 19-foot-tall statue of Abraham Lincoln sitting in contemplation, which is flanked on both side chambers with inscriptions of Lincoln’s

Second Inaugural Address and arguably his most famous speech, the Gettysburg Address. The statue is 19 feet high and weighs 175 tons. The memorial honors the “Great Emancipator” and 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Designed by Henry Bacon in the style of ancient Greek temples, construction began in 1914, with the memorial opening to the public in 1922. Carving of the Lincoln statue took four years and was completed by the Piccirilli brothers under the supervision of the statue’s sculptor, Daniel Chester French. The murals contained on the inside of the memorial were painted by Jules Guerin. Many large gatherings and protests have taken place at this important memorial – Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in front of it in 1963.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial The dome-shaped Jefferson Memorial is an iconic American structure. While its shape is an obvious nod to the Pantheon of Rome, it also mirrors the University of Virginia rotunda, a structure designed by Jefferson himself. The memorial is located in West Potomac Park on the shore of the Potomac River Tidal Basin. The interior of the memorial contains a 19-foot statue of Thomas Jefferson, and excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, which he authored, can be found on the southwest interior wall. The memorial is noted for its circular marble steps, portico, a circular colonnade of Ionic order columns and a shallow dome. The memorial honors third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, one of America’s Founding Fathers as well as the drafter of the Declaration of Independence and adviser to the Constitution. Its architect was John Russell Pope, who modeled the memorial after Jefferson’s own architectural preferences. Pope passed away in 1937 during construction, at which point the project was inherited by Daniel P. Higgins and Otto R. Eggers. The location along the Tidal Basin was selected in 1937, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the memorial in 1939. Rudolph Evans sculpted the statue of Jefferson, and the memorial received its dedication


Sunny skies greeted collectors for a weekend of fun seeing familiar friends at the Iowa Chapter’s Convention in Atlantic, Iowa the weekend of September 27th and 28th. The convention is part of the town’s annual Coca-Cola Days festivities. Collectors arrived from 18 states to set up for the swap meet at the Herring Building on Friday. With the community BBQ, the building was closed from 5 – 6 PM, then reopened for the Friday evening Sneek Peak from 6 – 8 PM. The Iowa Chapter then hosted a hospitality hour for registered members to relax and visit some more before getting some rest after traveling and setting up. Saturday morning was beautiful, and with that came light crowds for the Show, Sell and Swap Meet. The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce offered chances on a “Tour of Atlantic” raffle package as well as activities for children to decorate a Coca-Cola Bottle bank in conjunction with the theme for this year “Bottling Happiness.” After the swap meet, the collectors packed up and prepared for the Banquet at the Elks Lodge. Following the meal, Kirk Tyler introduced Andrew

McMillin , SVP, GM of Coca-Cola TM Brands at The Coca-Cola Company. Andy gave an entertaining talk on the most successful advertising campaign, “Share A Coke.” He demonstrated, with the help of video clips, how social media has sky rocketed sales of the Coca-Cola brands. After a few audience questionsfor Mr. McMillin; the Iowa Chapter gave away a few door prizes, had a short auction and members present were given a Coca-Cola Reidel glass as a banquet gift. The annual Chapter Business meeting was held on Sunday morning. Bob DeShane gave members present some vital information concerning the 44th National Convention to be held in Bettendorf, IA on June 26 – 30, 2018. After other business was discussed, chapter elections were held for the following offices:

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial The memorial honors Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidency, which lasted four terms between from 1933 to his death in 1945. FDR led the nation through a worldwide economic depression and the Second World War, and was the only American president to be elected to more than two terms. Roosevelt once joked to his friend, Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, that if Congress ever made a monument for him, he would like it to be no larger than the size of his desk and placed in front of the National Archives. Obliging this request, Congress placed a desk size stone and a plaque in honor of FDR in that exact location. However, a few years later, Congress decided that this was not enough of a tribute and selected a location in West Potomac Park along the Tidal

Basin for a much larger monument. The design of the memorial was chosen in 1978, and it opened to the public in 1997 after a dedication ceremony led by President Bill Clinton Designed by Lawrence Halprin in 1978, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Memorial was built to honor the 32nd president of the United States. The monument is divided into four outdoor “rooms,” signifying FDR’s four terms in office. Sprawling over seven acres, the memorial features 21 FDR quotes, along with accompanying statues and murals representing major events during Roosevelt’s four terms, including World War II and the Great Depression. The structure is made out of red South Dakota granite and was the first memorial built to be wheelchair accessible. It is also the only Presidential memorial to include a First Lady; a bronze statue of Eleanor Roosevelt stands beside the United Nations emblem.
