Cold War :Was the continuing state from roughly 1946 to 1991 of the political conflict, military tension and economic competition between the Communist World (Soviet Union and Satellite States and Allies) and the Western World (United States and it’s North Atlantic Trade) Organization)

Terms : Satellite State:Is a political term that refers to a country that is formally independent, but under heavy political and economic influence or control by another country. Truman Doctrine:Policy set forth by President Truman in March 1947 stating that the US would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent those countries from falling into the Soviet sphere of influence. Iron Curtain :This term came from Churchill’s speech. It referred to the barrier that separated Eastern Europe and Western Europe. The point of the “Iron Curtain” was to gain more control.

Containment : An American policy written by

George F. Kennan , its main idea was to keep communism contained within its existing borders.

Berlin Airlift: It was an act organized by the

United States and Britain to oppose Stalin’s blockage of Berlin. They supplied West Berlin through an airlift. Food, fuel, medical supplies, clothing, toys and everything the resident s of West Berlin needed was flown in the city.

Truman’s Response• Truman’s speech (The Truman

Doctrine) requested the congress that the united states of America should believe in a policy where money was used to stop the Stalin’s domination of European countries.

• Truman wanted to aid turkey, Greece and other countries who were resisting conquest by armed minorities or by outside pressures. This was reached by getting the US involved in European affairs . He convinced them by saying that the US was obliged to support free people and that the cold war was a chance to choose between freedom and oppression.

• He was given $400 million in order to aid Greece and Turkey.

Stalin’s Blockage of west Berlin Causes Resultso East Berliners started to flee to west Berlin, which meant they didn’t want to live under Stalin's control.

o He put up road blocks and walls, and barb wires on top . He closed railways and highways.

o East Berlin was prosperous and was an area of freedom. East Berliners wanted that freedom.

o He put soldiers who killed anyone who tried to pass through West Berlin.

o East Berlin did not want the government to control them.

o West Berlin would fall to the communists but they didn’t ! Stalin gave up
