Yogurt has many health benefits, but the regular store bought yogurt is laden with sugar and has artificial coloring and other unhealthy ingredients added to it.

The benefits:• Nowadays, yogurt is one of the best

sources of healthy bacteria. Good bacteria are vital for the digestive tract; they manufacture essential nu-trients for our bodies, and are great for our immune system. In the old-en days we used to eat a lot of fer-mented foods; like sourdough bread, sauerkraut and the famous Jewish borscht. These fermented foods naturally contained good bacteria, but our diet today is virtually void of probiotics, leaving yogurt the best way to get it from food.

• Yogurt has healthy protein. Protein fills us up, helps the body with main-tenance and repair, and is also good for building muscle, among its nu-merous other benefits.

• Yogurt has a low glycemic index . Not all carbohydrates are equal. Ev-ery carbohydrate will raise our blood sugar, some slower and some faster. The slower it raises our blood sugar, the better it is for us. The glycemic index rates how fast a carbohydrate will raise our blood sugar. Yogurts’ naturally occurring carbohydrates (not the sugar that is added to com-mercial yogurt) are low on the gly-cemic index, (full fat yogurt will be lower on the GI scale than low fat, because fat slows the digestion of

carbs) which means it will give you longer lasting, more stable energy.

Not all yogurts are created equal:The benefits mentioned are mostly

found in plain yogurt, preferably homemade. The typical store- bought yogurt may not have much bacteria left in it, and the sweetened yogurt has lots of sugar added to it. It may contain as much as 40 grams of carbohydrates; which is

the natural choice
