REFORMED INFORMER SUMMER 2019

Our church has more houses than we need. With Maggie and Dave Tripold now in their own (beautiful!) home, 32 Village Lane is vacant. The church also owns both the home in which Kay and I live, directly to the west of the sanctuary, as well as 28 Village Lane. In a couple of years the Horans will have completed their tenure on staff and that home will be available when we call another installed minister. It makes fiscal sense to sell 32 Village Lane, which will go on the market this month. The consistory will decide what to do with the proceeds, but some of the conversation is linked to paying down the mortgages we hold on 28 Village Lane and from building the ministry center. That’s business. For me, ...

SUMMER AT OUR NURSERY SCHOOL Summertime is a special time of discovery and adventure for children. Our summer programs, designed by our teachers, offer a new theme every week, promising lots of adventure, fun and learning.

June 9 at the 9:15 Service On Sunday, June 9, our Church

School students will lead worship at the 9:15 am. service. Each

year, the children work hard to memorize scripture, prayers,

responses, and creeds of our faith. The children will incorporate their memory work into the worship service. They will also greet and hand out bulletins, take the offering, and write other parts of the service. We invite everyone to this service to enjoy the leadership of our youngest Christians.

to all who make the Church School run, for your dedicated work this year. Your ministry of bringing the knowledge of God and the sacred words of the Bible to our children is a gift to our Church School. Administrators: Jan Anania, Ali McMenamy, Lynne Garner, Sandy Freeman, Jane Rappleyea, and Kathy Rodman: thank you for being on the team this year. Your work to keep the Church School running smoothly was most appreciated. Teachers: Alyssa Giles, Christin Outwin, Aly Naysmith, Noelle Soi, Yolanda Howard, Becky Axtell, Jillian Sherman, Barbora Sebolt, Shawn Burke, Andrew Spears, John Irwin, and Karen Hager. Your dedication to your students in teaching them the stories of the Bible is an important part of their faith journeys. Assistants: Caitlin MacClellan, Emily Contract, Amanda Geissler, Julia Contract, Kiersten Geissler, Rachel Howard, Josh Nestorowicz, Marian Hager, and Lance Welch. Your help in the classrooms is so needed and well done. Children at the Lord’s Table Communion is one of the two sacraments of the Reformed Church in America (the other is Baptism). As our children mature and grow in faith, we invite them to learn about communion and to join with the congregation at the Lord’s Table. Continue to pray for the children who participated in communion with their families and the congregation on May 5. More

SUMMER WORSHIP Summer schedule: starting June 16, through Rally Day, September 8, there will be one worship service beginning at 9:15 a.m., except communion Sundays July 7 and August 4, when we worship at 9:15 and 11 a.m. A special children’s activity (Pre-K—completing 2nd grade) will be held in the Ministry Center, Room 24/25. FOCUS ON FELLOWSHIP

BE A GREETER! Greeters are an essential part of our worship team. They are the first person many people encounter at church on a Sunday morning. To a visitor, warmth, friendliness and caring are some of the most important qualities in a church. The Greeter is their first link to the congregation. • If visitors are made to feel comfortable in that first contact,

they are more likely to return. • If you have a talent for smiling, we would love to have you join

the Greeter Team. This commitment requires 15 minutes of your time once every eight weeks. Just arrive early to church and greet people with a friendly “Good Morning”.

• If you think this important ministry is for you, please sign up on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall for the Sunday that works with your schedule. Any questions please email Dianne O’Hara at [email protected].

Dealing with Grief, Depression, Anxiety, Addiction or Relationship Issues? We have a Church-Based Mental Health Counselor, provided by Churches Improving Communities. For an appointment, contact Lorrie McGough , MA, LPC, LCADC, NCC at [email protected] or 732-784-3394 to schedule an appointment. This is a donation-based program and no one is refused help due to lack of funds.

Summer Church Activity Beginning on Sunday, June 16, the church will offer a worship activity for children aged three through entering grade 3 beginning after the “Gospel for Children”. This year, we will have stories, crafts, and Bible lessons from Awesome Adventures: God’s Amazing Son where characters “Anna and Jake” will introduce us to people who met Jesus such as Zacchaeus, the 5000 people Jesus fed with bread and fish, and they will teach us how Jesus welcomes all people of all ages. No sign up needed, just come to church and join the group whenever you can! Weekly Leaders Needed! The lessons and supplies will be organized ahead of time. We just need adults and teen helpers to make things work. Sign up on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall or outside during summer worship to help in this important ministry and wonderful opportunity to help our children in their spiritual growth! Call or email Pastor Debi Jensen.

Consistory Nominations This September, a single slate of nominees for consistory will be proposed to the congregation by a nominating committee. This committee is composed of an elder and deacon whose terms are ending and are not eligible for reelection and three members at large from the congregation, elected at the last congregational meeting, who have agreed not to be considered for nomination. This year’s nominating committee is: Lew Anderson, Taylor Burke, Laurie Robinson, Brian Allain, and John Applegate. They will serve through this year’s congregational meeting at which they will present nominees for consistory and for the following year’s nominating committee. Please share with the members of the nominating committee your input as to whom you believe would serve our congregation well as an elder or deacon. They are needing and expecting your prayerful participation in this process! Contact information for the members of the nominating committee is in the church directory and will be published in the weekly bulletin announcements. Elders and deacons, along with Minister of Word and Sacrament, comprise the consistory. Deacons are men or women who are called by God and uplifted by the church as those who are leaders in ministries of service, mercy and outreach. The open diaconal roles in the up-coming consistory is in the area of fellowship. Elders are women or men who are called by God and uplifted by the church as those who are

leaders in ministries of discipleship, worship and spiritual oversight. The open roles at this time are to guide and lead in the ministries of Christian discipleship, and Church Management.

Finances God has blessed us to be a blessing. With that, our church campus is an outreach center as well as a place of renewal and solace. We are people of worship and witness. To enable that, you are generous with your time, talent, and treasure. Thank you. The gifts you share make a life-changing difference. Our fiscal year concludes on June 30. As with any organization, there are expenses involved. Our annual budget is over $800,000. Most of that comes from your tithes, gifts, and offerings (there is a small amount of interest income and outside organizations such as AA provide a donation for use of the buildings). Your generosity makes a life-sustaining, and life-changing difference—people are encouraged spiritually, people-in-need are given tangible resources, children and adults are educated in Christian teachings and values, fellowship is encouraged—our campus is a place of solace and blessing, God is praised! As of May 1, our operating account shows that income almost exactly matches expenses (careful and focused budgeting!). Thank you! Yet typically, giving is not as strong post-Easter, so please continue your strong, God-honoring support. As there are ongoing opportunities and needs, your continued giving, through e-giving and weekly offerings is appreciated.

Have you remembered the Church in your will?

Staff Summer Plans: During the summer months, life in the church office is a bit different than during the program year. With vacations and job responsibilities. the ministry continues on strong, but in varied ways. The church office is open Mon.-Thurs. from 8:30am-3pm. Although administrative support is not present on Fridays or after 3:00pm, staff is often working; but if you plan to stop by, it is advisable to call first. Dianne O’Hara, our Congregational Care Coordinator, works remotely during the summer. The best way to contact her is at [email protected]. She will check her email multiple times per day, but messages left on her voicemail will be checked only once per week. Debi and Scott will not take vacation at the same time, so one or the other will be always be available for pastoral support.

Liturgists: During the program year, members of the current confirmation class assist in leading worship. Typically this involves participating in the first part of the service, as we are called to worship and offer prayers of confession. If you—high schoolers or adults—would like to share in this opportunity during the upcoming months, please contact Scott Brown, Debi Jensen or Barbara Battles (Commissioner for Worship) and they will help set up a Sunday for you to do this. You do not necessarily have to write the worship materials, just lead with what the ministers have provided as they ensure that the worship theme is unified.
