Since its beginnings over 22 years ago, The Clubhouse: Where Technology Meets Imagination has been a resource for thousands of young people to explore their own interests, develop skills, and build confidence in themselves through the use of technology. The Clubhouse is at once an inventor’s workshop, design house, sound stage, hackerspace, music studio, and programming lab. At the Clubhouse, underserved youth unleash their creative talents, engage in peer-to-peer learning, and develop a unique voice of their own to express themselves through “STEAM” – STEM and the arts. Walk into a Clubhouse and you will find groups of young people making 3D models and animations, producing and editing films, building robots, creating graphics and websites, designing computer games, writing and recording music, and much more. Whether working alone or collaboratively, youth learn to take a project from early concept to final product, develop the ability to express the steps they have taken to achieve their desired results, and assist other youth in following the same path. In the process they become inspired about learning and about their own future. Young people who might have become apathetic about school find a sense of purpose at the Clubhouse and become re-engaged in their own success. QUICKFACTS

The Clubhouse Network is a program of the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab. www.theclubhousenetwork.org

• The Flagship Clubhouse was founded in 1993 by the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab.

• he Clubhouse Network provides start-up support, professional development, dissemination of new learning innovations, evaluation, and sharing of best practices worldwide.

• Fueled by an investment of over $50 million by Intel beginning in 2000, and implementation support from other sponsors, the Network has grown to 100 Clubhouses in 20 countries, reaching over 25,000 youth per year.

• The Clubhouse was awarded the prestigious Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation for making a difference in the lives of the people it serves, having measurable outcomes, and providing an innovative model that could be replicated by others.

• In 1998, The Clubhouse Network established one of the first social networking sites, the Clubhouse Village. As a member-only website, the Village expands the worldview for Clubhouse youth, mentors, and staff, who post, comment, and collaborate on projects worldwide.

• A co-founder of The Clubhouse, the MIT Media Lab provides the Network with access to new technology tools, workshops on how to use them, support of the Clubhouse Village, and innovative project ideas for the creative use of technology.

• Held every two years since 2002, Teen Summit is a biennial week-long Youth Leadership event that brings Clubhouse youth together from each of the 100 Clubhouses internationally. Youth leaders explore and propose solutions to social issues through the creative use of innovative, high-end technologies. Each Teen Summit includes a college and career fair, collaborative cross-cultural activities, and many other opportunities for educational, career and personal growth.

• The Clubhouse-to-College/Career (C2C) program helps Clubhouse Members explore professional jobs and academic opportunities, and learn from people who have already succeeded in their careers. The objective is to provide Clubhouse youth with meaningful out-of-school learning experiences and job readiness skills that inspire interest in STEM careers.

• Published by the Teacher’s College Press, The Computer Clubhouse: Constructionism and Creativity in Youth Communities showcases research by scholars and evaluators that have documented and analyzed The Clubhouse Network, and considers the implications of their findings in the context of what it means to prepare youth to meet the goals of the 21st Century.

YOUTHOUTCOMES

“ I owe a lot to The Clubhouse. I learned a lot, not just about technology but myself. As a result of the positive reinforcement I stayed in school where before I did not care. The Clubhouse was my U-turn. Since then I have passed all my classes and made up for lost ground.”

A recent survey of Alumni worldwide revealed that The Clubhouse provides young people with an innovative environment that empowers them as learners and gives them opportunities to contribute to a broader community.

InnOVATIOnWith high-tech tools at their fingertips, youth can do almost anything they imagine: build robots, make movies, write and record music, produce artwork, learn programming languages and more.

CLUBHOUSE TO CAREER (C2C) PATHWAYS TO SUCCESSC2C Pathways is a new initiative to address the employment gap between young adults who are un- or under-employed, and prospective employers who face a workforce skills gap. Capitalizing on the marketable technology skills, problem-solving, and collaboration skills that young people gain at The Clubhouse, a pilot is underway in 5 Clubhouses. The objective is to provide Clubhouse youth with meaningful out-of-school learning experiences and job readiness skills that inspire interest in STEM careers, giving them the tools to meet the needs of a dynamic labor market in the years to come.

CLUBHOUSES AS MAKER SPACESWith funding from the Intel Foundation and support from the MIT Media Lab, in 2014-15 The Clubhouse Network provided nearly 50 Clubhouses with “maker” grants to introduce youth to hands-on do-it-yourself engineering experiences while engaging in creative expression as a maker. Based on its success, in 2016 the producers of “Make” Magazine will publish a book co-authored by The Clubhouse and MIT: “Start Making! An Informal Guide from the Clubhouse Community.” Its focus is on introducing “make” activities in informal educational settings, in particular to youth who are under-represented in STEM fields and careers.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE GRANTThe Clubhouse Network was awarded a three-year, $1 Million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. These funds support Project IMPACTS (Increasing Mentor Participation and Commitment to Success), aimed at strengthening the delivery of mentor services at Clubhouses in underserved communities across the nation.

CLUBHOUSE CATALYST INITIATIVEAs interest in the Clubhouse learning model continues to grow, The Clubhouse Network is developing an initiative called “Clubhouse Catalyst” to assist others in adapting Clubhouse activities and ideas to their educational settings. After-school clubs, neighborhood computer labs, community libraries, among others, can all benefit from more deeply engaging young people in hands-on, self-directed technology learning. Through professional development workshops, consultative services, and online resources, The Clubhouse Network is dedicated to expanding the reach of the Clubhouse experience to an even larger audience.
