CHORUS.Hail to Mulhooly!

It was at this Jinks that the celebrated " Irish Cantata " was produced. The music of this operatic masterpiece was written by Dr. H. J. Stewart, and the legendby Peter Robertson. The pathetic and touching strengthof home associations is simply but forcibly brought outin this little work wherein is also shown the beauty andpower of true and unselfish love. The story relates in asimple manner that Dennis Mulhooly, leaving Irelandfor England's sake, voyages to America, acquires greatpolitical influence and enormous wealth and finally becomes an Alderman of New York, which fact is set forthby the chorus in Greek fashion, in the opening number:

1887 points out what is the use of a man's" running NewYork," if he cannot marry his daughter to an Englishpeer. The chorus which, as has been said, is modeledafter the genuine classical article that rebukes, protests,explains, praises, condemns, warns and advises all in thesame breath, and after having meddled with everybody'saffairs until they are in a hopeless tangle, sings an odein praise of its own wisdom and foresight, the choruscounsels the maiden to accept the peer.

stone mansion, he is incontinently thrown out by the 1887Alderman and kicked down the steps in various musicalnumbers while the different members of the family singtheir emotions as they watch his descent. But at thiscrisis (observe the dramatist's cunning) the bottle ofpotheen faIls from the bog-trotter's pocket.

the secreted object, and reluctance when going from it,that to a sensitive organization was a sufficient guide.The idea being combated, Kelly said that he could proveit by doing the thing himself. His assertion waspromptly called, a committee took charge of him whileanother committee proceeded to conceal an article, awatch, which was placed in a coal bin in a remote closet.Kelly, blindfolded, then took the hand of one of the skeptics who had hidden the watch, holding it lightly, andhurried with him through the Club, sometimes awayfrom the object, sometimes toward it, but ever circlingnearer until finally he opened the closet and broughtforth the watch.

Mr. Bruton was a talented writer and an excellent actor. His imitation of a foreign nihilist making avitriolic speech against law and order was capital.Rumpling his long hair and shaking it out of his eyes,he inveighed against society, puffing out dense volumesof smoke from his pipe and pounding the table with hisbeer glass, or with his long arms and claw-like fingersheld aloft he called down anathemas in French, German,Russian and English on the heads of all representativesof authority, demanding that everybody claiming anyrights whatsoever be knifed in the back or blown to perdition with a bomb.

prose and verse to the extent of several yards. Sounique was this contribution to the literature and art ofthe day that the owner of the umbrella felt in a measurerecompensed for his loss, when the Secretary presentedthe screed to him in lieu of his umbrella. But a news-paper man promptly borrowed the manuscript and thatwas the end of that, also, except for the foregoing scrapswhich indeed may serve to reconcile the reader to itsdisappearance.
