Thank you and three cheers to our outgoing Commodore, Jim Whited, for his leadership and

tireless dedication to our many programs and activities over the past two years. Huzzah-

Huzzah-Huzzah. It will be a challenge to fill his shoes, but I am confident to take my shift at

the helm of our club with an incumbent filled board and strong programs ashore and on the

water.

I look forward to working with the Board’s Officers, our Director-advisors, our many Program

Chairs, and the host of volunteers, who continue to generously give of their time and energy,

to our club’s successes. Thank you all.

We have an unscheduled change in the role of Treasurer for 2020. Kristi Yurko, who has been

filling the role of Treasurer for several years, will continue her efforts to grow our member-

ship roster and improving our internet presence and documentation. Kristi will transition her

Treasurer efforts to Russell Miller, a long-time SMSA member who previously held the posi-

tion back in the days when he was racing Diablo. Russell has generously agreed to be our

Treasurer for 2020.

We have an event-filled calendar throughout the year and January is no exception. I hope to

see you and your crew at the Annual Gala and at a couple of our happy hours! We have sev-

eral ashore planning and social activities and meetings for indoor activities. Many of us are

outdoors at boatyards doing off-season work on our boats in preparation for an incredible

year on the water that includes a summer filled with cruises, raft-ups and races. There are

plenty of social events and opportunities to meet new crew, swap sailing stories and make

new friends.

SMSA has been part of my life since 1991 when I moved to the area and crewed aboard

IRETSU and HAGARS. Rebecca and I met while sailing in SMSA races. Our family enjoys the

club’s on the water and ashore activities. Isabelle and Chloe thoroughly enjoy racing on

Mumm36 CHEETAH, learning how to sail and race dinghies in SMSA summer camps and

spending time with the next generation of sailors at club events.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on how we are doing and ideas on what we can do

better in 2020. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and our cruising and racing sailing

communities. I look forward to my term as Commodore.

SMSA Members,

MAKE YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO VOLUNTEER.

MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE AT SMSA!

We still need a volunteer to be our Communications Chair. Patty

Kimmel has stepped down and several of us are trying to fill in the gaps but we could

really use your help. We really need your new ideas for communicating with our SMSA

ditional details.

John Blaney (Facilities Chair) can still use volunteers to help with the planning and ex-

ecution of converting our Social Room into a Warming Kitchen. For more information

Thanks to those of you who have already volunteered, your service is greatly appreci-

ated.

THE SOCIAL SCENE WITH GRANT & KEEN Cori Grant & Jody Keen, Co-Chairs

I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season. We were busy around the club with

the Christmas Walk and Boat Parade as well as our annual Christmas Party. The Christmas

Walk generated record crowds and we had a busy evening with children painting and sailing

their boats in the middle room pool.

All in all, it was a great evening of fun! Congratulations to the high school sailing program

for winning 1st place in the Boat Parade!

The following Saturday we celebrated our Christmas dinner at the club. Although our num-

bers were not as high as in years past, we still managed to polish off two turkeys and

hams!

Everyone should have received their invitations to the annual Gala. Please be sure to RSVP

as soon as possible. We should have a great evening of awards and dancing to The Pax

Rats! I look forward to seeing everyone at the party!

It seems like we just had our last cruise of 2019 but it is now time to start thinking about next year. Our first overnight cruise, to St. Leonard Creek, is only three and a half months away. All other cruises are yet to be determined at the Cruise Planning Meeting on Sat-urday, January 4, at the SMSA clubhouse. A lite breakfast will be provided at 09:30 and the meeting will begin at 10:00. All cruisers and anyone interested in cruising are welcome to attend. Please let me know if you plan to attend so I can get a head count for the food. Also, please let me know if there are any destinations you would like to consider for cruis-es. Some already suggested are Annapolis, Cape Charles/Southern Bay, Baltimore, Phila-delphia, Rock Hall, Portsmouth/Norfolk, and Oxford/San Domingo. We will begin the meet-ing with a discussion of these and other options. By this time everyone with 1000 or more miles in 2019 should have notified me. These and other awards will be presented at the SMSA Gala on January 11. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the Planning Meeting and the Gala. Until then, THINK CRUISING.

Buccanner 18 North American Championships

SMSA has been given the great opportunity to host the 50th Anniversary of the Buccaneer

North American Championships in 2020!!!! The club has hosted two previous BNAC events

in 2010 and 2015 with great success. We hope that we can make this year’s event even

more special for the crews that travel from around the country to attend this regatta. If

you’re interested in providing on-the-water or shore support for this event, October 2nd—

5th, we are in the initially planning stages and would appreciate the assistance. Please con-

Now that I have retired as SMSA Commodore, I can move onto my dream retirement job --

- RUNNING A BAR! As the new SMSA Bar Manager I am following in a position that has

had dedicated club members that worked hard to make the Bar a great part of the social

and sailing scene at SMSA. I am grateful to Todd and Jennifer Porter for leaving the bar in

great shape for me to pick up the job and begin my new career. I will try to keep the Bar-

nacle Bar on an even keel and well stocked. As prior Bar managers have stated I will al-

ways be interested in suggestions from our members.

So, the new products for January are:

19 Crimes Red Blend Description: (Southeast Australia) Nineteen crimes turned crimi-

nal into colonists. Upon conviction, British rogues, guilty of at least one of the 19 crimes,

were sentenced to live in Australia, rather than death. This punishment by ‘transportation’

began in 1788, and many of the lawless died at sea. For the rough-hewn prisoners who

made it to shore, a new world awaited. As pioneers in a frontier penal colony, they forged a

new country and new lives, brick by brick. This wine is borne of the rules they broke and

the culture they built. And like our legendary rogues, it’s a taste that’ll live forever in infa-

my.

Goose Island IPA Description: Goose Island’s flagship IPA is a six-time medal winner at

the Great American Beer Festival. We’ve taken the traditional English Style and created our

own fuller flavored IPA with bright citrus aromas and a bold hop fin-

ish. With hoppy, bold, and smooth flavor, Goose IPA is the perfect

beer for hopheads and discovery drinkers alike.

I hope you will enjoy these new products , also if you have a favorite I should look into as a future add please let me know. Enjoy!

SMALL-

BOAT

RACING

Dan Bowman

Smallboat Race Chair

[email protected]

It may seem that there is little to report on the activities of December and while the holiday

crunch did make it difficult to report on those activities, we were busy. As noted previously

Smallboat had a meeting and will be convening again in early 2020 to discuss some of the

tabled topics and finalize changes. The date will be discussed in the email list.

We raced in December’s Freeze Your Bucc Off! Five boats planned on racing, four made it

out and raced with one having to leave the course after very civilized dismasting. There will

be a short write up by the involved competitors in the next Clew article.

NOTICE: SMSA SMALL BOAT STORAGE 2020

A reminder to all small boat owners… SMSA members who wish

to lease a boat parking space during 2020 must submit a request

to dockmaster Mark Witte during the month of January. Spaces

will be assigned for occupancy on April 1st. Members must in-

clude in the request the type of boat to be placed in the yard.

Members requesting more than one space should indicate which

boat is their highest priority.

ORC SEMINAR – MARK YOUR CALENDAR

Dobbs Davis will be leading a seminar at Annapolis Yacht Club on Saturday, February 1, from

10 am - 12 pm in the Sailing Center, guiding sailors through the steps of applying for an ORC

certificate. He is the Chairman of the Promotion and Development Committee for the Offshore

Racing Congress (ORC) and chief handicapper for our area. AYC’s 2019 Fall Series had 21

boats in the ORC Division divided into two classes. AYC is inviting those sailors who do not cur-

rently have valid ORC certificates to attend this seminar to learn more because of the opportu-

nities that will be available to you this coming year.

Starting in 2020, AYC's Wednesday Night Racing will include an ORC Division. Dedicated ORC

classes will be included in the following AYC regattas: Spring Race to Oxford, Annual Regatta,

Annapolis Labor Day Regatta, Fall Race to Solomons, and the Fall Series; an overall ORC trophy

will be awarded to the top boat in these weekend regattas. The seminar will be open to AYC

members and non-members, free of charge. Call the AYC Front Desk to register: 410-263-

9279.
