CORPUS CHRISTI

In January 2010, I was working for an emergency response organization when the devastating earthquake hit Haiti. During the critical days and weeks that followed, mass distributions of plastic tarps, blankets, pick axes, medicine, food and clean water were organized and scaled up. However, I was struck when humanitarian aid workers relayed that there were constant requests for priests to visit the devastated communities in Port-au-Prince. In their bleakest hour, the residents’ unwavering faith and belief in Jesus Christ was evident. They regarded the Eucharist with reverence and awe and were filled with overwhelming gratitude as they received Holy Communion. They knew God would be with them and carry them through their trials and suffering.

This weekend, we celebrate the Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ—often known by its Latin name, Corpus Christi. This is a joyous day! For God shows his love for us through Jesus. As Catholics, we believe that Jesus is present—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity—in the Most Holy Eucharist.

The sole focal point of what we celebrate today is the Eucharist. We must always keep the Eucharist at the center of our lives and at the center of our faith. We pay the greatest reverence to the Eucharist because we understand the power and reality of His presence in the Blessed Sacrament. For it is in this bread that we have been given Christ. This is not an idea, not a symbol, not an abstract theological phrase—it is a wider, more profound mystery.

When we look at the consecrated host—we look at Christ.

The Second Vatican Council states that the Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life.”

Everything we are, everything we believe, everything we celebrate around our altar comes down to that incredible truth—that what began on Holy Thursday, more than 2,000 years ago, in an upper room, continues here, at Saint Anne Catholic Community, and at all altars around the world. The very source of our salvation is transformed into something that we can reverently hold in the palm of our hands.

When we attend Mass, we take part in a miracle. We bless ourselves with holy water, genuflect, recite prayers, sing hymns, listen to God’s word and

participate in the liturgy. Taken together, we revive a spirit of reverence and awe for the most Blessed Sacrament, and we don’t take it for granted. When we receive the Holy Eucharist, we say “Amen!” We believe that Jesus is truly present. God dwells within us as we become living tabernacles. This is the insight we take away from every Mass as we leave and return to our daily lives. God’s mercy and grace flows toward each one of us.

One of my favorite phrases in the Mass is found at the end of the liturgy when the presider proclaims “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” This is a powerful command. On this feast day, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation and shine a spotlight on more than 75 parishioners who are Ministers of Care. It is through their dedication and faith that the sick and dying of our parish are ministered to on a daily basis at ten sites within Barrington. They are the hands and feet of Jesus in our community. Many of these devoted parishioners have quietly served for years, bringing the body of Christ to those most in need. They are beacons of light!

Let us all take a few minutes in quiet prayer to consider what we may say to Christ, ask of Him, offer to Him, this weekend, as we receive his Body and Blood.

What will we do, knowing that we have been transformed by bread that has been transformed? How can we transform the world? We carry something greater than ourselves out into our world.

May the Eucharist be a source of comfort and light for all of us.

Mary Ellen Johnston—Director, Care Ministries

SINGING THE FAITH: WHAT IS THIS LOVE? About ten years ago, Terry and I were invited by the music director at St. Agnes Parish, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, to come do a concert and workshop for them. It seemed like a great opportunity to see part of Ontario I hadn’t been to before, and so we said yes and went north and had a great time. Our hosts, Marcia Vaillant (the director) and her husband Ted, also a fine musician, trombone player and big band arranger and conductor, showed us around and had a son about our son Desi’s age, so the time we spent not rehearsing or performing was relaxing and comfortable.

Marcia came to Music Ministry Alive in 2015, the year Terry and I helped out on the team, and later asked me if I’d consider coming back to Thunder Bay for another concert and workshop, but she also wanted to commission a piece for her choir for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the choir in their parish. We conversed about the kind of song she wanted, and settled on a communion processional. The Mass was going to be held in June of 2016. The most fun part of all was that several of the members of the choir were actually members of the choir when it was founded fifty years earlier! Our time in Thunder Bay in 2016 was as much fun as nine years before, and Ted and Marcia have been to Barrington and Lake Zurich to visit us as well.

Through this particular time period, you may remember that with Mary Jane Kurowski and the Faith Formation team, we were leading a two-year program of soup suppers, videos and book discussions on James Alison’s wonderful “course on Christianity,” a look at the whole enterprise of Church, scripture and faith through an almost entirely new lens, called Jesus, the Forgiving Victim. Though I had been a fan of Alison’s work for years, and before him, of his mentor, Rene Girard, Forgiving Victim really affected me, and helped me, much like Alison pictures Jesus doing on the road to Emmaus, to reinterpret my life as though I had never really understood it before, like it was happening around me, but not to me. The most important thing turned out to be that the interpretative key for my life is Christ himself, who Christ is, as he is, or as best we can understand who he is from the New Testament: the forever-presence of God made human in a specific person who is so much different from our expectation of what a god is like that, in Alison’s words, he is much more like no god at all than our expectations of a god.

I like to write what I’m passionate about at the time I’m writing. I want to write about whatever moves me inside, and try to communicate that passion in the song. So when I got down to writing this song, trying to say something, in a question, about who Jesus is, in the surprising way that he reveals who God is to us, and invites us to join in that wonderful, creative energy: Who is this God who comes to dine, Whose life is broken into pieces, And shared with us like wine? What is this love spread before us a feast? Let us gather at God’s table, And learn there the ways of peace. The verses just find different ways of expressing that: all are equal in God’s eyes; all are entitled to freedom and respect; and that the source of all this outpouring of accepting, generous love is God, giving us the Spirit of Jesus, the crucified Lord, risen and present among us.

What Is This Love? was picked up pretty quickly by OCP, one of my publishers, in Portland, Oregon. I think it’s a nice addition to the communion repertoire, with a singable refrain, and verses that allow participation, along the lines of May We Be One.

50 years of its existence!

Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE Our Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Program is wrapping up for our inaugural school year. Overall, it has been a great learning experience for our K-5 students. PLTW teaches the Engineering design process to empower students to develop and apply in-demand, transportable skills by exploring real-world challenges. Students not only learn technical skills, but also learn to solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate and collaborate.

Fourth Grade Project Lead the Way has wrapped up the Collisions Module. Students built a vehicle and designed a restraint system to keep an egg from cracking. Next, the groups explained how the proto-type solved (or did not solve) the problem, suggested ways to improve the model, predicted how the improvements will make your model a better solution to the problem and communicated the solution to others.

Fifth Grade is working on Robotics and Automation. They have built their “robot” and will be using it to solve a design problem. In this design problem, students work with their group to design, model and test a robot that can remove hazardous materials (represented by blocks) from a disaster site. The group also designed the layout of the site to in-clude a water site and a hazardous materials collection zone.

Pictured, right, are 8th graders helping with the builds and a photo of the first completed robot!

By Clem Aseron Sharing the Living Story

There is a unity among the four pericopes selected for the Lectionary1 for the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ; in the gospel pericope2, the cultural and theological thread concerns the covenantal relationship between the Lord and the disciples and has resonance in the Hebrew scripture (Exodus pericope) as well as the Psalm and the pericope from the Letter to the Hebrews.

The setting in Mark (and in the other two synoptics3) described as occurring during Passover is historically less accurate than John’s account which has the last supper occurring before Passover. It is probable that the synoptic authors wished to emphasize to their own audience that Jesus observed the tradition. Accordingly, Mark describes that it is the males (the Twelve) who prepare the Passover meal in keeping with the command from ancient times.4 (Females prepared ordinary meals.) Meals like this are served by a single woman, usually a widow, who tended to the needs of the men and the boys past the age of puberty; women, girls and younger boys ate separately at a later time.

But note that the setting is the city of the Temple; Judeans (Jews) are streaming in from distant places for the holy days of Passover which recalls and make present the liberation from oppression by the God of their ancestors. They are still under oppression5—this time by the Romans—which prompts them to recall their deliverance from Egypt and to celebrate it but this causes tension. Mark introduces a bombshell into this highly charged context: the conspiracy against Jesus by the authorities6 and their hiring of Judas. This political context—the sneaking around by Judas and his looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus—strongly suggests that Jesus7 and the Twelve are keeping a very low profile.

This makes vv.12-16 intelligible. The image of the man in v.13 is culturally startling8 but he certainly is easy to spot in the crowd; this “contact man” leads the two “advance men” to a “safe house,” where after giving the suitable “passwords” (v.14), they are admitted to a previously readied space for celebrating the Passover but this time, more in the style of the original Passover.9

Despite this tension and Jesus’ revelation about the impending betrayal and their resulting great distress, Jesus breaks bread and then interprets its meaning for them. He applies the parts of the story of the meal not to the great Exodus event but to himself.

He is the pasach, the paschal lamb10 who renews the blood of the covenant11 by his death.

In anthropologic terms, this meal shared in common is more a ceremony than a ritual. A ritual causes a change in status; baptism would be an example. A ceremony is regular, repeated and predictable and serves to confirm and legitimate the roles and status of people within the community. Eating in common implies that these people share common ideas and values, and common social status12 as well.

Sharing the Living Story

So What? In our daily lives, what meaning do these theological categories have?

Take, for example, a covenant; it is made between two parties. At Mark v.22, Jesus says: Take it [the bread]; this is my body.

At v.24, Jesus says: This is my blood o f the covenant, which will be shed for many. What signifies our part in this covenant?

However, note the parallel in today’s Hebrew and Christian scriptures. In the Hebrew scripture (Exodus 24:3-8), Moses mediates the covenant at Sinai between the Lord and the people13. The Lord will give them land and rescue them from oppression by their enemies. In turn, they will keep the Lord’s commandments. It is a covenant and it is sealed by blood. The Christian scripture (ironically, Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-15) describes Jesus as the mediator of the covenant a different one14; his death (blood) seals this relationship and the people are rescued from the oppression of sin and death. In the meal called the Last Supper, Jesus uses bread and wine to do an action which is prophetic: the rescue that he will soon perform will liberate people from the oppression of sin. Of course, the disciples do not yet understand. So Mark sets this meal in the context of the Passover and adds for them (and for today’s disciples) the dimension of anamnesis or remembrance; it is an act whose repetition would make present, in the now, an event that occurred in the past. To celebrate the Passover today makes present the mighty salvation deeds of God15 for those celebrating. To celebrate the Breaking of the Bread and the Pouring out of the Blood makes present the covenant promise of Jesus for those celebrating.

But is it over? At v.25, Jesus says he will fast from the sign of the covenant: Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. That kingdom is where God’s justice is brought to fulfillment, where glad tidings are brought to the poor, liberty is proclaimed to captives, sight is given to the blind and the oppressed are set free.

We go to Communion each Sunday. We most likely do not think or pray in these categories. Perhaps we simply give thanks for the blessings we have; some days, we are pressed to ask the Lord for insight or for help. On other days, perhaps there is more?

Works consulted: Social-Science Commentary on the Synoptic Gospels, Bruce J. Malina and Richard L. Rohrbaugh; Say to This Mountain, Mark’s Story of Discipleship, Ched Myers, et. al.;

1 Lectionary: The Church’s book of biblical passages chosen to be read at each Mass celebrated during the Liturgical Year 2 Pericope: scriptural passage selected for use in the Lectionary; it may contain discontinuous verses (the Psalm or the Gospel for today) or added

words (Brothers and sisters are not in the bible text) or rearranged text (compare the Psalm Refrain with its v.13). 3 Matthew and Luke draw from Mark, the earliest gospel, to sketch their specific narrative; the three are called the Synoptics since a given event

can be viewed in three parallel columns. 4 Exodus 12:3ff. You shall observe this rite as an ord inance for you and your sons for ever 5 Exodus Chapters 1-18 for the story of the first Passover 6 Mark 14:1-2 7 Mark 14:10-11; see also 43-45. It is interesting that Mark does not have Jesus respond that it is Judas who will betray him. 8 Mark’s readers would have found it strange that a man was carrying a jar of water. It was the task of women to gather at the well, to draw and

carry water; a male in that setting would be immediately suspect; in terms of honor/shame he would be an immediate challenge to the fathers, brothers, husbands associated with any women nearby.

9 Exodus 12:11, as those in flight ... 10 Exodus 12 11 v.8 of today’s pericope from the Hebrew scripture 12 How startling and jarring it is when Jesus departs from the norm as he eats with all manner of folk. Mark 2:15ff. 13 Exodus 24:3ff 14 Note the use of the phrase The blood of the new and eternal covenant at the end of the Consecration at Mass 15 The Hebrew Scriptures record the deeds of God’s mighty right arm which rescued the people of the First Covenant time and again.

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at 847.382.2148.

Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our faith community.

• Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child

• Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

• Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at 847.382.5300.

Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at 847.620.3067.

Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at 847.620.3072.

Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment.

Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions. For further information, call the parish office at 847.382.5300.
