Adults: Social Media Awareness
Worship Center at 5:30 PM
Presented by Mrs. Gia Hughes
Hope Rising Ministries
Social media is a "world" in which most of our children and grandchildren live. Through Facebook,
Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms our youth communicate regularly
with one another. With the use of social media, however, comes certain inherent dangers from a va-
riety of sources. Examples of these dangers are sexual exploitation and bullying. Mrs. Gia Hughes
of Hope Rising Ministries believes it is critical for parents and grandparents to be aware of these
problems. Parents especially must be informed and equipped to help protect their children before
they encounter these evils through social media.

With A Whole Heart
O ur Christmas celebration reminded us of God’s amazing love
for us in giving His Son Jesus to be our Savior. God spared no
expense to save us. What, then, shall be our response? Paul
answers this question in Romans 12:1, I urge you therefore, brethren, by
the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice,
acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. God calls His people to love Him
with a whole heart. This is our correct response to the One Who gave His all for us.
We begin 2018 as a church seeking to be whole-hearted for our God. On Sunday mornings and eve-
nings we will learn from the examples of Judah’s kings – both positive and negative. Our study
takes us to the book of 2 Chronicles which ‘chronicles’ these kings and their respective heart condi-
tions before God.
Weathered
or
Seasoned?
Did 2017 weather or season you?
Before you answer let me define the
terms as I am using them. To be
weathered is the concept that outside
influences wear down, degrade, or diminish something. Like
wind, rain, heat, and cold weathering exposed wood. Over
time these elements degrade, deteriorate and will ultimately
destroy wood left out to weather.
To be seasoned has a different connotation. It is the concept
of something being improved by things being added to it.
Think of your favorite dish of food. It began with a basic core
ingredient that had things added to it, to season it, to get that
taste that is so pleasing to you.
Forgive me for mixing metaphors but did 2017 weather or
season you? Have you ended the year worn down by the
experiences of the year? Did the circumstances of life change
you - but not in a good way? If you don’t change how you
respond to those influences they will continue to wear you
down, degrade you, and diminish you. This experience is
passive on our part. We view outside things as just
happening. We see them as acting upon us. We hunker down
and attempt to weather them on our own as if God were not
involved.
On the other hand has 2017 seasoned you? Have you
embraced the experiences, circumstances, and even
challenges of life as something God has sent or allowed to
season you? Have you allowed the Master Chef to add things
to your life that have seasoned you or changed you in a good
way? To get that favorite taste that God enjoys, which
scripture describes as a fragrant offering of a broken and
contrite spirit. To be properly seasoned we must actively
chose to yield ourselves to God, seeing all things as an
opportunity for Him to season us for His special purposes
designed just for us.
As many of you know our son, Mike, is a chef. When he
comes home he often cooks for us. He begins with basic stuff
that we are used to. He then starts adding all kinds of
ingredients that we couldn’t imagine would make a tasty dish.
We scratch our heads and wonder how it will ever turn out,
but we have learned to hold our tongue and just wait for the
finished product. It has always been better than good. So it is
with God and His seasoning of us. We often scratch our heads
in wonder but in the end He never disappoints.
Did 2017 weather or season you? Will 2018 weather or
season you? It’s your choice. Choose today to see all that
comes your way as an opportunity for God to season you into
that tasty person who is pleasing to Him, beneficial to others,
and fulfilling to you!

Jesus constantly used the natural world as both a teaching
point and as a platform in His ministry to teach us who we
are, who God is, and how to follow him. We will follow
Jesus' journey up the mountain, out to sea, and across the
field in this teaching series. Come with us this January to
see again that He is the authority over creation but also of
our lives. Our lives can often look a lot like the wilderness,
and we desperately need Jesus' true and guiding voice to
lead us through it.
