“BELIEVE: Church-wide Series Beginning September 7th”
As you know, when it comes to the Bible, we do not always know what the
specific purpose was for the original author of certain books. This is not the
case with the Gospel of John, the writer of John tells us exactly what his pur-
pose was.
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are
not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus
is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his
name. (John 20:30-31)
John leaves no mystery as to purpose. John’s gospel was written that we might
believe and have life in Jesus’ name. Now, please understand me, I think
John’s purpose sounds beautiful, hopeful and life-giving, but the important
question is, “What does that really mean?” What does it mean “to believe”?
What does it mean to “have life in his name”? What does this life look like?
Thanks to the work of our Faith Formation Team, this fall, we are all going to
be invited to answer these and many more important questions through a
church-wide series entitled “BELIEVE.” Through the BELIEVE series we are
all going to be invited to “Come learn to THINK, ACT & BE like Jesus.”
The series will not start until September 7th, but sign-ups will begin August
7th. There will be multiple times during the week that you can participate. One
of the strengths of the BELIEVE series is that children, youth and adults will
be studying the same topics and material, age appropriate, of course, at the
same time. Families will be able to have cross-generational conversations
about the same topics of faith, conversations that can help enlighten and deep-
en the faith of each family member.
Pardon the pun, but I “believe” what the designers and authors of BELIEVE
believe, that what you and I believe drives everything we do in our lives; how
we treat others, how we measure success, and for some of us, how we raise our
kids. What we believe matters. Ultimately, it guides, shapes and directs the
way we live our lives for God in this world.
So what DO you believe? Who are you becoming? How should your beliefs
direct your life? I hope this fall you will plan to take a journey with others to
think, act and be more like Jesus. I hope you will take a journey to look closely
and live more faithfully what you really believe.
Again, watch for sign-ups beginning August 7th. I look forward to this time of
learning more about and living more out of our beliefs as a church family.
Much grace and peace!

Bowling Green Retirement Village Worship Services
The fourth Sunday of each month at 2:30 in the afternoon, SSUMC provides a worship service for the residents of BGRV. Various members of our congregation share the
message, provide special music and lead the worship service. We are always looking for
more people to be involved (especially young families). Please contact Lee if you would like
to be a part of this vital ministry. You will be blessed as you are blessing others.

New Member Sunday August 28th - Have you been think-
ing about joining our
church family? In the
United Methodist
Church, people join in
two ways: 1) by
baptism and profes-
sion of faith 2) by transfer of membership
from another church. Is God leading you to
follow Christ through State Street UMC? We
would love to speak with you about this im-
portant decision. Please contact Dr. Jay or
Lee Young at 270-842-8171.
This summer I will propose withdrawal of up to 100 books
now cataloged in the library. Older titles not checked out
since 1990 will be the target. Church members will be able
to scan those selected volumes and provide feedback to me
before final decisions are made.

August Focus:
The Foundry Christian Community Center
Located in the west end of Bowling Green, only a few blocks up 11th
Street from our church, the Foundry is a district-wide effort of the
South Central District of the United Methodist Church created to
provide the children of the West End of our city with the spiritual and
educational foundation that will ensure a level playing field for them
to be and achieve all they were created to be.
The Foundry passionately believes that communities
are transformed when their children succeed. To achieve this,
the Foundry model focuses on four key areas:
Education and Mentor Relationships: The Foundry is committed
to preparing children to succeed educationally in a spiritually nurturing
environment. The primary focus is on pre-school-aged children in pov-
erty situations. These children often begin Kindergarten with an 18-
month educational deficit that is almost impossible to overcome. Access
to high-quality early education is essential to success for these chil-
dren. The cornerstone of our education strategy then is a top-
notch preschool at the Foundry. The strategy also encompasses edu-
cational components for various age groups: after-school tutor-
ing, summer enrichment camps, a mentoring program with an area ele-
mentary school and parent education classes.
Relational and Partnership Development: The Foundry is committed
to long-term development in the West End. At the core of this strategy
is building authentic relationships with our neighbors, community organ-
izations and ministries so that we can share the responsibilities and cel-
ebrations of working together for the transformation of our community.
Health and Fitness: The Foundry is committed to building strong,
healthy children by engaging them in sports and teaching healthy life-
style habits. The key component of this strategy is a health and fit-
ness ministry developed around soccer, making full use of a new
$350,000+ soccer field built by the City of Bowling Green on property
leased from the Foundry.
Resourcing the Mission: The Foundry is committed to securing the
financial and people resources necessary for the expansion and sus-
tainability of the ministry. At the core of this strategy is a coordinated
communication plan for effectively sharing the Foundry story with our
neighbors, volunteers, donors, our city, and for those who are yet to be
captivated by the potential of the Foundry's ministry.

SSUMC Kids on a Mission
Every 5th Sunday of the year, the kids
participate in Mission Toolbox, led by
Burton Vaughan and other men of the
church. During the Sunday school
hour, this group leads the children in
creative projects they can use to help
others. July’s project was a wooden
pencil box we can share with kids who
are going back to school. Thank you,
Burton, for your leadership!
Their Educate-A-Child campaign is a scholarship campaign that will
support the general work of the Foundry to assist in offsetting the cost
of preschool & after-school attendance. You can contribute through our
August Communion offering. Any donations left on our altar rail on
August 7th will go to this scholarship fund.

AUGUST AT A GLANCE
School isn’t the only thing to start back in
August and our stuff will be lots of fun!
August 6 is Faith and Family Night at Hot Rods stadium. Join your church family for some baseball and fun together.
August 7 at 9 am is a Sunday school celebration. We’ll
have music, food and fun! We’ll all enjoy breakfast together,
followed by some games and a tour of the children’s area.
Come see what new things are in store for children’s Sunday
school this school year, check out your classrooms and meet
our teachers and their helpers. Parents are welcome to attend
with their children.
August 14—Kids are invited to bring their backpacks to church
on because at both worship services we will have a
Blessing of the Backpacks to get our kids’
school year off to a great start and a way to bless
them all year long! If teachers would like their
school bags blessed, they are encouraged to bring
them that day, too!
August 17— Wednesday Night Gatherings are back!. Come
anytime between 5:30 and 6:00 for a yummy meal (kids eat
free)! Then stick around for classes and choirs. We hope you
can join us as we kick off our Wednesday nights!
August 24— Another free meal for the kids if you come before 6
pm! Then, at 5:50 the preschoolers will begin rotating through
choir, learning and play times. The elementary kids will begin
upstairs at 6:00 then divide for choir and classes. Hope to see
you there, and feel free to invite a friend!
For more info., contact Rev. Cindy Bright, Associate Pas-tor for Faith Formation at [email protected] or
842-8171.
To all our great and awesome VBS volunteers for covering things I overlooked, for correcting my mis-takes and being just generally fantastic while sharing God’s love with kids. Thanks to you, our VBS was a big success!
Every Sunday before Sunday school, I tell the children to go learn to love and follow
Jesus. That is our focus each time we get together, and I am excited about this new,
church-wide series we are beginning this Fall that will help us do just that. Each week,
all of our members—children, youth and adults—will be engaged in looking at the
same topics, learning the same principles of being a disciple. For children, this will take
place during our Wednesday class night times together, beginning on September 7th.
We will begin by looking at ten things we believe as United Methodist Christians.
Our beliefs shape our actions and drive everything we do in life. We want our kids to know what they believe so when they are faced
with other influences from the world, they can stand firm. Parents are the primary influencers of their children’s faith development,
so it is my hope that our families will be learning the same things each week and will be able to talk about these beliefs together.
I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to live out the command from Deuteronomy 6: 5, 7—” Love the Lord your God with
all your heart and will all your soul and with all your strength... Impress (my commandments) on your children. Talk about them
when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Sign-ups for adults begin
August 7th.
