THE CHURCH VOICE

Along the Causeway…………

Dear Friends in Christ,

“Virginia is for Lovers” Do you remember that advertising slogan still used by our good friends to the north?

And with Valentine’s Day in February, one could say “February is for Lovers” - the Hallmark card company would be pleased.

But more importantly for everyone here at Shallotte Presbyterian, we need to remember the Church is for Lovers. God so loved the world that He

gave us Jesus Christ. The Church is the body of Christ at work in the world and our work should be a labor of love. The Church is for Lovers.

February starts off with 2 opportunities to enjoy delicious lunches. The Women’s Club uses our Fellowship Hall for their annual Souper-Bowl on

Saturday, February 1. And the very next day our Fellowship Committee and SPY invites everyone to have chili for lunch after the 11:00 Worship Service.

Please give the money you would have spent on lunch to SPY for their Food Pantry fundraiser.

All four Sundays in February will find me or Pat preaching from the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-6. Please read those familiar chapters again and pray for your pastors as they lovingly prepare their sermons.

Are you praying for your Deacon? Please know they are praying for you. Maybe you can send your Deacon a Valentine’s Card to thank that caring

person for the love you receive throughout the year. Remember the Choir is trying to raise enough money to buy new Robes

- they would love for you to make a special gift to the Choir Robe Fund. Why not do it in February, the month for loving gifts?! Love to see you in Worship!

Robe Fundraising Campaign Continues

We Need Your Help!

During my tenure as Music Director at Shallotte Presbyterian, the

congregation has consistently expressed wonderful appreciation for the work and

inspiration the music groups and musicians bring to the worship services and

special events. In addition, church members have also been very generous in

their support of Music Program projects, especially in times when we need some

extra funds. From creating wonderful facilities for both Chancel and Handbell Choirs to exemplary

support for our organ fundraising several years ago to purchasing a new piano for rehearsal to buying

additional handbells and chimes for expansion and additional musical expression, you have always

been there to help us achieve our goals. We are truly grateful for that support and feel extremely

blessed to be part of a congregation that displays such warm generosity.

Now, we are coming to you with a sincere hope that you will support us in our fundraising

campaign which serves to supply our Chancel and Handbell Choirs with new robes. Many of you

heard Marie Greene talk about our effort a few Sunday’s ago. She mentioned that the current blue

robes worn by our choirs are approximately twenty-two years old. Yes, several of the robes and stoles

are showing the wear and tear of twenty-two years.

Back in late spring of 2013, a Robe Committee began researching the vast array of robes and

accessories available for sale and found that, like everything else, the choices are overwhelming.

However, after many meetings and extensive examination, the Committee brought before the

members of our musical groups eight different robe styles and several different colors from two

major robe and apparel companies for their close investigation and critique. Each Chancel Choir and

Handbell Member was able to express their opinions and make their favorite choices in written

surveys on two different occasions. Their final choice just happens to answer many of the criteria as

set forth by the Robe Committee in initial meetings.

The robe and accompanying overlay we wish to purchase are extremely versatile and go well

with our Sanctuary and all the colors as set forth by the Lectionary Calendar which determines

parament colors displayed each Sunday. It is made of light material so that it is much more

comfortable than our current robes. It is slightly unique and much more up-to-date style-wise than

current robes. Our chosen robe is simple but elegant and will make our groups look very handsome.

From the beginning, the Committee was drawn to the idea of placing an embroidered cross on both the

yoke of the robe and both sides of the overlay, a discreet representation of our Music Program’s

commitment to our mission of bringing others closer to God through sacred music. The vast majority

of Choir and Handbell Members agreed.

We need to raise approximately $8,500 to pay for thirty-two robes and thirty-two overlays

($265 for one robe and one overlay). We are asking for your help to meet our goal. Our desire is

to have the robes by the Easter Season so that we can use them for the Maundy Thursday Service and

Easter Sunday. That means we need to order them by the first week of March.

We thank you greatly for any consideration you may give our request. We think you’ll be

extremely pleased and proud of your investment.
