The Prayers ~ In this season of All Saints let us give thanks for the blessings God has given to us in our country of Canada and in our families and homes in Ottawa. For Christian Churches everywhere and especially for Anglican Churches in the world especially those listed in our bulletin today, in Canada, in the North, in our diocese and our companion diocese of Jerusalem.

For our bishop John and all the clergy and people, let us pray to the Lord. Hear us O God.

For our Queen and all those in authority under her, for the rulers of the world that they may help bring justice and peace, let us pray to the Lord. Hear us O God.

For peace in the world, especially in the land of Jesus birth, in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. For all those working for peace, doctors, nurses and aid workers especially in West Africa. For our Canadian soldiers and diplomats, for innocent people in the midst of war, let us pray to the Lord. Hear us O God.

For children and young people everywhere, that they may have enough to eat and a safe place to sleep. For our Sunday School and our nursery. For our parents and grandparents and our teachers, let us pray to the Lord Hear us O God.

For homeless people everywhere especially in our own city and region of Ottawa. For the work of Cornerstone, Centre four-five-four and other ministries that help and give shelter for homeless men and women, let us pray to the Lord. Hear us O God.

For the sick and especially those mentioned on our parish prayer list in the bulletin, those in hospital, for the victims of flooding and other disasters. For those in the Garry Armstrong Home, let us pray to the Lord. Hear us O God.

The Calendar All Saints

At present we are on the outside of the world, the wrong side of the door. … We cannot mingle with the splendours we see. But all the leaves of the New Testament are rustling with the rumour that it will not always be so. Some day, God willing, we shall get in. From C.S. Lewis The Weight of Glory (1942) We believe the saints are in heaven. The saints’ experience can in part be found in the New Testament: that they are with Jesus; that they are like Jesus; and that they have glory. The first two of these ideas are easy for us to imagine in human terms, although our imaginations are limited by what the heavenly Jesus is like. We may be made in God’s image, but what is beyond the image we do not know. We certainly have suggestions in the gospels for what Jesus is like, but they must be abbreviated accounts. The saints are bathed in glory. Such glory is sometimes compared to the beauty in nature, but it really refers to the beauty behind nature, which we glimpse only occasionally. These are the numinous moments of the mystics, from time to time granted also to us. It may have been more readily apprehended before we separated nature from society and we unconsciously blended the natural and spiritual world. It is the glory of God looking on us with approval. Well done thou good and faithful servant. It matters what God thinks of us, not what we think of Him. There are no formulae for winning His glory other than what we hear in the Prayer Book communion service – love God and love your neighbour as yourself. The saints are those whom God recognises with approval. We are told there are some who will not be recognized, and some parts of the church have claimed knowledge of how to avoid this predicament. But Jesus told us to let God in and let love out. The saints do so, and so can we. C.S. Lewis wrote that there are no ordinary people. The saints are immortal but only due to the love of God.

A Reading from the Letter of John 8:15 & 10:30 services

Think how much the Father loves us. He loves us so much that he lets us

be called his children, as we truly are. But since the people of this world did

not know who Christ is, they don’t know who we are. My dear friends, we

are already God’s children, though what we will be hasn’t yet been seen.

But we do know that when Christ returns, we will be like him, because we

will see him as he truly is. This hope makes us keep ourselves holy, just as
