Ordinations Three transitional deacons and one permanent deacon were ordained for the Diocese of St. Cloud June 16th at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Congratulations to Rick Aubel, Mark Botzek, Gregory Sauer, and Dean Pawlowski. Though there are no ordinations to the priesthood in the diocese this year, this is also the time of year many priests celebrate their own anniversaries of ordination (including your parish pastor). As we reflect upon ordination and the role of the clergy in our lives and the Church, we also continue to pray for our bishops, priests, and deacons. We also pray for an increase in vocations and that many people would generously respond to the call to serve God and his people. I also want to address a recent article from the local newspaper about women priests in the Catholic Church. Though this brief bulletin article could never hope to cover all the theological, historical, and philosophical material necessary to do true justice to this topic, suffice it to say that the ordination of women priests is not possible in the Catholic Church. In 1994, Pope St. John Paul II made this as clear as possible in his letter Ordinatio Sacerdotalis when he declared: “Wherefore, in order that all doubt may be removed regarding a matter of great importance…I declare that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church's faithful." In saying that the Church does not have the authority, it is acknowledging that what God has put forth, we cannot alter. To say that we know more than God who created us would be prideful arrogance. To think that Jesus was not “enlightened” or free enough and was forced to choose only men would be to effectively deny his transcendence and divinity. The newspaper article erred in stating that a women priest might be validly (though illicitly) ordained. To say that a sacrament is celebrated validly is to say that the proper effect of the sacrament takes place (e.g. the ordination actually happens). To say that it is celebrated licitly is to say that it is celebrated in accordance with Church law. It is possible that a sacrament may be valid but illicit. For example, a laicized or excommunicated priest is not to celebrate the Mass. But if he were to do so, the sacrament would be valid (the effect would take place and the Eucharist would be consecrated) but it would be illicit (against Church law). If that laicized priest tried to use non-wheat bread or non-grape wine (invalid matter), then the celebration would be both invalid (no sacrament takes place) and illicit (still against the law). The Catechism of the Catholic Church is clear that "Only a baptized man (vir) validly receives sacred ordination" (1577, emphasis mine).
This teaching does not deny the fundamental equality of men and women any more than the fact that only women can bear children does. The Blessed Virgin Mary is held in highest regard by the Church and as the pinnacle of all cre-ation. She was certainly more holy than the Apostles but was not called to service of the Church in the same way they were. Not being chosen for the ministerial priesthood or to the same mission proper as the Apostles does not in any way diminish her dignity. There is much more that could be said on this topic. But I wanted to make sure that our parishes are properly in-formed of what the Catholic Church teaches, and not con-fused or mislead by half-truths and inaccuracies published by outside sources. If you have any questions on this matter or other matters of the faith, please feel free to contact me.
Fr. Timothy

WHAT’S HAPPENING
JUNE 24, 2018 4
PBRO. OSWALDO RAMON ROCHE GERDEL.
