Praying for the People

I saw a Walt Disney movie on television recently. It was a wonderful movie titled, Ruby Bridges. It was the story of Ruby Bridges, a six-year-old African-American girl, who was the first person to integrate the schools in New Orleans.

Every day, federal marshals escorted her into the schoolhouse because both sides of the sidewalk were lined with people who were screaming threats. Robert Coles, a noted Harvard psychiatrist, volunteered his time to work with young Ruby. Every day he would talk with her, trying to help her weather the crisis. On the news one night, he noticed her walking up the sidewalk while the people were screaming and throwing things, but suddenly she stopped, said something, and started backing down the sidewalk. Then the marshals picked her up and took her into the building. . That night, Cole asked her what she said to the marshals. She said, "I was not talking to the marshals." He said, "Yes, you were. I saw you on the news. I saw your lips moving. You were talking to the marshals." She said, "I was not talking to the marshals." He said, "Well, what were you doing?" She said, "I was praying for those people who were hollering at me. I had forgotten to pray and I was trying to go back and pray for them as I walked to the school building." Cole shook his head and said, "You were praying for the people who were screaming at you?" She said, "Yes, my mama taught me that when people speak mean of you, you pray for them just like Jesus prayed for the people who spoke mean of him."

You see, when Jesus lives in your heart, you just can't hate anybody.

¡Caminado con Jesús!

¿Jesús llena nuestras expectativas? Las expectativas frecuentemente nos atollan de manera que creemos tener la solución para todo. . Sabemos esperar, pero cuando algo sucede que nos sorprende tenemos que decir si creemos o no. . ¿Es esto real? La gente de Nazaret tenía ciertas expectativas en cuanto a este niño coterráneo suyo, o sea, que este “hijo de José” no podía ser el Mesías esperado. ¿O acaso pudiera serlo? Dios tiene el habito de sorprendernos y de desafiar nuestras expectativas. ¡IV DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO! La gente de Nazaret esperaba un Mesías diferente, que derrocara a las autoridades romanas. . Pero Jesús quiere que comprendan que él no vino sólo para su propio pueblo. . El mundo es mucho más grande y por eso les recuerda que Elías les mostro la misericordia de Dios a una pobre viuda pagana y que Eliseo invoco el poder curativo de Dios para sanar a un extranjero. . El amor de Dios no puede ser reducido a una ciudad o a un solo pueblo. Ni tampoco el amor del Hijo de Dios. . El amor es la respuesta definitiva. El amor es el don mayor más duradero que Dios nos ha concedido. Ha sido el amor del Padre lo que nos trajo a Jesús, el amor de Cristo que nos ganó la salvación y el amor de ambos lo que nos dio el Espíritu Santo. Por eso es que ese amor puede vencerlo todo. ¿Puedo ver el rostro de Jesús en alguien con quien estoy en desacuerdo? ¿Puedo responder con amor? ¿Puede ese amor disculpar sin límites, confiar sin límites, esperar sin límites y soportar sin límites? . Los quiero, reciban mi bendición y no se les olvide orar por mí. St. Mary’s School Annual Soup and Pie Supper has been rescheduled to Wednesday, February 6th. They will be serving Krek’s famous Chicken Wild Rice Soup, Chili, Green Chili Pueblo Stew, ham sandwiches and pies and desserts. Serving begins at 4:30 pm and the Talent Show starts at 6:30 pm. To get your tickets for the Catholic United Financial Catholic School Raffle, look for students in the back of the church or stop by the school office. Top prize is a 2019 Chevy Trax or $20,000 cash. Other prizes include a $5,000 dream vacation, family getaway, TV, Valley Fair package, iPad, gift cards and more. Congratulations to Queenley Nguyen, St. Mary’s First Grader for winning 1st place at the local level, and 2nd place at the regional level in the VFW Auxiliaries Americanism Coloring Contest. Funding is limited to programmatic expenses and excludes building construction except in cases of emergency.
