THE FIRST CANDLE OF ADVENT Like a prelude to a symphony, Isaiah’s voice rose in the temple, saying, “Here am I Lord, send me!” It was an overture to his great prophetic adventure of declaring the Lord’s messages. Later, his voice would echo down through the centuries like a tympani proclaiming the one message the world longed to hear: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.” His was the voice of prophecy fulfilled. Isaiah was a prophet who spoke the word of God. This is what Isaiah said: "The people who walked in dark- ness have seen a great light. Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness—on them has light shined." "For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counse- lor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." "His authority shall grow continually and there shall be endless peace. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this." Let us light the first candle of Advent.
