Who is First Christian Church
of Thomas, Oklahoma? What do
we represent? What is our
mission? Where does our passion
take us? Where does our heart lay?
If someone were to ask you
about our church what would
you say? Could you respond
without hesitation? These are all
important questions for us to ask
ourselves during this time in our
history. We cannot be content to
rest comfortably in a world that is
changing by the minute.
Our church is more than what
we do during worship. Yet each of
us can struggle to define just
exactly who we are and what we
do. To me the basic answer is to
follow the great commandment.
Jesus [said], “The first is, “Hear, O
Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord
is one; you shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, and
with all your soul, and with all
your mind, and with all your
strength.” The second is this, “You
shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
There is no other commandment
greater than these.’”
This is who we are. We love
God and we love our neighbors.
Yet each of us has different ideas
on how to accomplish our mission
in the world. That is what we need
now. Ask yourself these questions
and look for answers. We need
your dreams and goals for the
church no matter how crazy or
far-fetched it might seem. We
need new and bold expectations
for our members in order to be the
light of Christ to the world. It is
not easy to be the church, but it is
part of who we are as the Body of
Christ in the world. Let us work
together to redefine who we are as
Christians and in our community
for the greater glory of God.
Blessings,
Jason

Get your bowl and your spoon
ready! March 7 is National Cereal
Day. Since the end of the 19th
century, cereal is America’s most
popular breakfast food. The cereal
industry rose from a combination of
sincere religious beliefs and
commercial interest in health
foods. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg
experimented with granola. He
boiled some wheat, rolled it into
thin films, and baked the resulting
flakes in the oven; he acquired a
patent in 1891. In 1895 he launched
Cornflakes, which overnight captured
a national market.

Last week, Jason & I went to
Merrifield Office Supply in Elk City
and picked out a new desk for my
office. The desk that has been in the
office was donated in 1997 and had
served us well, but was falling apart.
When the Board approved the
purchase of a new desk at the
February Board Meeting, they
decided to use the very last of the
Thelma Cox Memorial fund to pay
for the majority of the cost. I just
wanted to take a moment to thank
the Board and those that contributed to
the Memorial for our new secretary’s
desk. I’m still figuring out where I
want to place everything, but not
having to struggle to open drawers
and repeatedly pick up the bits of
desk that kept falling on the floor is a
blessing. Thank you.

Rewoven After Jen Hatmaker’s dog shredded an heirloom
baby blanket, she piled up the dirty yarn and asked
her mother-in-law to somehow reassemble the
original. In Of Mess and Moxie (Nelson Books),
Hatmaker explains how this is a picture of God’s
sovereign work.
When our lives are tattered by sin and suffering,
God doesn’t start from scratch or create a replica.
Instead, he uses the original threads to reweave a
stronger version and to restore beauty.
(Interestingly, when Joseph tells his brothers in
Genesis 50:20 [ESV], “You meant evil against me,
but God meant it for good,” the word meant is
Hebrew for wove.)
“Nothing bears a better witness than watching
God resurrect someone’s life,” writes Hatmaker.
“That is a God who folks want to know, a God
worth his glory.”
