REFLECTIONS
GOSPEL MEDITATION
May 27, 2018
Most Holy Trinity
Happy Trinity Sunday! In today's Gospel, we hear Jesus declare together all three Persons of the Trinity. "Go therefore, and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
When we speak of the Trinity, two different theological words are sometimes used: immanent and economic. The immanent Trinity is the life of the three Persons within themselves, the inner harmonious relationship between Fa-ther, Son, and Spirit. We see this in the Gospels when Jesus speaks of his Father and promises to send the Holy Spirit. The term "economic" has its roots in the Greek word oikonomia, roughly meaning "household manage-ment." The economic Trinity is our three-Personed God's relationship with creation; it is creation and redemption and ongoing relationship with us.
Made in the image and likeness of God, we are called to imitate God's immanence by giving and receiving love with one another in
community. However, this is not limited only to those close to us, though that's where love often starts. We also imitate the economy of God when we
go out, when we extend our love and care in a life-giving way. "Go therefore ?"
Every believer is sent on mission. Every believer is invited to follow Jesus and the Apostles "to the nations," to the margins, to the people who require a little extra reach. This could be a distant relative, the residents of your local homeless shelter or even the forgotten neighbor next door! When we love
well, we create something beautiful-a relationship, a holy moment, a foretaste of heaven. This Trinity Sunday, take some time to examine the relationships
in your life. How well do you love those nearest to you? How well do you reach out to those farther away? How are you creating something beautiful?
JUST FOR KIDS
SHARING THE GOSPEL
As the disciples ate with friends, trav-eled, worked, shopped, and made new friends, they were to have one goal in mind-help more people follow Jesus.
Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to love God and love each other. Teach them to have mercy and forgive each
other. Teach them to be humble. Teach them to pray. Teach them to share. And teach them to tell the people they met
how to follow Jesus, too. What is a sacramental seal and where did it come from?
Leaving more than just a memory, there are some events in our life that are truly transforming, making us different people. The same thing can be said of spiritual things, especially sacraments. A sacramental seal or character is a theological con-cept to describe the life-changing and permanent effect of three sacraments on the person: baptism, confirmation, and holy orders. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that these sacraments confer a seal "by which the Christian shares in Christ's priesthood and is made a member of the Church according to different states and functions. This configuration to Christ and the Church, brought about by the Spirit, is indelible" (#1121).
Once we receive these sacraments, we are forever changed. It's a spiritual "point of no return" whereby we take a step forward in our faith journey. We are marked as people of faith, as those who have received the Spirit and as those called to serve in ordained ministry. That is why these sacraments are received only once. The direction is set, the choice is made, and we are called by God to be his people. Nothing can change that, not even our own sinfulness. © 2010 Liturgical Publications Inc
