This Week’s Sermon

Do You See The Urgency?

Mark 1:14-20

There are several versions of the time-honored story of how a man hates to stop and ask for directions. I myself have been found guilty of trying everything before I ask anyone for orientation and direction. I ought to be able to find it on my own. It can’t be that hard! It used to be that finding my way was easier. There weren’t any freeway exchanges in Morton, Texas. It was 1970 before the city fathers installed a traffic light on the courthouse square, and on the days it malfunctioned, it didn’t really matter. There was only one Farm-to-Market road turn from town to the farm. You just could not lose your way. Then I moved away from home and discovered a new, bigger world. I experienced North Central

Expressway in Dallas, the dreaded loop in Houston, and I’ve even driven in Washington, D.C. the wrong way down a one-way street, in a 38 foot motor home! Finding your way got harder and I still hated to stop and ask for help!

Churches sometimes are the same way. We struggle with seeking help for an intended direction. We confuse

repetitive motion and action for successful movement toward the next envisioned destination. If we aren’t careful, we can drive around and around the loop of Christian activity without actually getting anywhere. The smaller world of our church past and present can be seen in our rear-view mirror, but the view out the front windshield is one of a bigger, new world, and in the Midland perspective, it is a rapidly changing world. What are we to do?

In so many words, that is the question we asked the church last fall through a series of congregational

luncheons. It was an intentional moment to hear from you and now the Vision Team goes to work to digest and process all that work towards a GPS heading for the future of First Christian Church.

They will begin that work this Saturday in a writing retreat with our church consultant. In the months ahead

they will share their efforts for church feedback and ultimate approval. Know that the main thing(s) will remain. We will still serve our community. We will welcome all persons.

We will celebrate the gift of Christ’s table every time we worship. We should remember these and use them to keep us grounded in who we are. We have great leadership in place that can give us vision of what lies over the horizon. They will help us look ahead for what comes next.

But this process has been and will be about asking for directions… …so it’s OK to wander away from the shoreline of familiarity. It’s OK to wonder what might be. I’m looking forward to the next part of the journey. It will be a great trip. I’m trying to remember that and ask

for directions more. I hope you are, too.
