COMMODORE’S MESSAGE

As I sit down to write this month's message, many of you are preparing to head

out for ―Danger Island‖. This promises to be one of our best cruises yet, thanks

to all the work of our ―Governor for Life‖ and ―First Lady‖. Paula and I are really

disappointed that we can not make the cruise due to dual problems we are

experiencing. First, Freestyle's engine is sitting in the cockpit waiting on parts -

which makes it hard to get out of the slip. Second, Paula is spending every day

with her 95 year old mother who is currently at Hope Hospice. We hope all our

cruisers will have a great time again this year.

In case you missed the announcements at our May Membership Meeting, your board of directors

inducted Carol Pim as an Honorary Member. The Pims have been very active in all facets of the club

since its inception. In addition, moneys donated to the Jerry Pim Memorial Fund will be donated

towards safety equipment for Edison Sailing Center.

Our program to provide $200 grants to young people at Edison Sailing Center is going great. Under

Chuck Milbrandt's direction, CMCS has now provided 25 grants this year!

Speaking of ESC - the April 18th West Marine Community Day for ESC netted a donation of $1,100

from West Marine to the Center. The check was presented at our May Membership meeting.

June looks to be a great cruising month for CMCS. We start off with the 10,000 Islands cruise,

followed by our Fisherman's Village cruise. And then there's our big Ladies Race on June 9th. Finally,

don't forget to start making plans for 4th of July up at Franklin Locks.

Web Guru's June Tip: Have you checked out the artwork for this year's Summerset Regatta? The

painting is titled ―Sunset Finish‖ by Jan Werdin. It's right there on the Summerset home page -

Smooth sailing to all,

The Caloosahatchee Boat of the Year Series for 2011-2012 is now complete. There were

eight regatta and a boat was required to participate in at least three of them to qualify.

Eighteen boats qualified in the season’s series. CMCS host six of the eight regattas.

The others are hosted by PGSC and GCSC. In the Multi-hull Division, Erik Soronen’s

Triumph was first. In the True Cruising Division, David Naumann’s Jolly Mon was first,

followed by Arnie Pfalz’ Laura Li and Brock Johnson’s Vixen. In the Non-Spinnaker

Division, Steve Romaine’s Air Supply was first, followed by Cecil Hazen’s Desperado. In

the Spinnaker Division, Forrest Banks’ Midnite Rider was first followed by Joel

Andrews’ Macushla. C-BOTY awards will be presented at the WFPHRF annual meeting

and dinner on Saturday, June 23rd. More dinner details will be announced as they become

available.

Davis Island Yacht Club’s annual Tampa-Fort Myers Race began on Thursday, May 4th. CMCS was represented by

four of our members – Steve Romaine’s Air Supply, Bob Duff’s Chase The Clouds, Bill Misenheimer’s Barefeet and

Ned Christensen’s Passion III - in the twenty-one boat fleet. Unfortunately, the fleet was becalmed off of

Sarasota for 3-4 hours overnight. None of the CMCS boats finished, although another Ft. Myers boat, Joel

Andrews’ Macushla, did manage to complete the race, finishing fifth in the spinnaker division. The fact that many

boats didn’t finish (only boats that flew spinnakers completed the race) did not deter the partying! It was

reported that Joel Andrews’ Macushla was awarded a handle of Mt. Gay rum but since he was absent from the

awards presentation, he was sent the empty bottle autographed by those in attendance! Others receiving awards

at the awards party held at Bonita Bills were Steve Romaine’s Air Supply (the Ballerina Trophy), Bob Duff’s Chase The Clouds (The Pelican Trophy) and Mike Kayusa (The Jesters Hat).

The Fort Myers Sailing Club hosted their 5th annual River District Regatta on Saturday, May 5th. All of the entry

fees for The River District Regatta went directly to the Edison Sailing Center. A total of 17 boats participated,

including six boats from CMCS. In Division ―A‖ (nine boats) Steve Roake’s Meritorious was first, John Finnegan’s

Miss Cathleen was fifth, and Diane Fowler’s Windy City was eighth. In Division ―B‖ (8 boats) Gary Blessing’s

After You was first, Roger Horton’s Wicked Wicked Ways was second and Mike Young’s Latitude was fourth.

Overall, Gary Blessing’s After You was first and Steve Roake’s Meritorious was second. The post-race party and

awards ceremony was held after the races at the French Connection Restaurant in Ft. Myers.

The CMCS Estebel Night Race was held on Saturday evening, May 12th. The race began in 15 kts. of easterly

breezes which built to 15 to 20 kts. and 2 to 3 ft. waves by the time the fleet got to the turning mark off of

Knapps Point. The 15 nm. race was essentially a windward / leeward event. Sixteen boats started the race with

three boats dropping out for various reasons along the way. In the Multi-Hull Division, Ned Christensen’s Passion III was first. In the Spinnaker Division, Forrest Banks’ Midnite Rider was first followed by Joel Andrews’

Macushla. In the Non-Spinnaker Division, Steve Romaine’s Air Supply was first, followed by Art Monahan’s

Sunrunner and John Churchill’s Nurdle. In the True Cruising Division, David Naumann’s Jolly Mon was first,

followed by Bill Misenheimer’s Barefeet and John Finnegan’s Miss Cathleen.

The next Distance Race will be the Kayusa Cup on Saturday, September 15th. More to follow as this event gets

closer.

The Bone Island Regatta from Naples to Key West began on Thursday, May 18th off of Naples Pier. The wind

gods were uncooperative (again!). The entire Naples fleet Did Not Finish due to lack of wind. The parties were

well attended, though! The race back to Naples from Key West had a similar outcome, with only one boat finishing

– Southern Crescent.

Diane Fowler has volunteered to organize the Ladies Race on June 9. This race requires a woman to be at the

helm at all times during the race, including the start. There may also be a ―dress‖ code! It’s a ―fun‖ race (aren’t

they all?!) with separate awards for this event only. Contact Diane for more details and to express your interest

in participating. All registrations (for this event only) will be handled by Diane Fowler. Further details can be

found elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter.

The Edison Sailing Center is sponsoring Friday evening races in the clubs Sonar’s beginning Friday, June 15th at

6:00 PM and continuing on the third Friday of July and August. For more information, call: Dave Plonski, 239-470-

9310. Sign up on the ESC website www.edisonsailingcenter.org. Sonar’s usually have a crew of 3-4, so get your

crew together ASAP! This is an adult program and is not intended to be instructional.

Work is under way on the October 5-6, 2012 47th Annual Summerset Regatta. Watch for news on Summerset in

upcoming issues of the Chowder Chatter and on the Summerset website: www.SummersetRegatta.com. Start

getting your crew psyched now!!

Remember that WFPHRF certificates expire on June 30. Renew now while you’re thinking about it!

Last month, I noted that WFPHRF has some rules that we may not always be aware of, including some safety

requirements and minimum crew requirements. Continuing with this theme this month WFPHRF rules require that

―All ―factory‖ installed items shall remain in place as designed. This includes, but is not limited to, galley sink, stove, icebox, head sink and head, any water tanks, fuel tanks, or holding tanks, doors, hatches, partitions, floorboards, etc.‖ Perhaps now is a good time to take a minute and re-read those rules! Let’s all try to stay in

compliance!

And speaking of rules, one of the benefits of being a U S Sailing member is receiving a new ―Racing Rules of

Sailing‖ rule book. The rules are updated every four years. The next new rules book will become effective on

January 1, 2013. Join now to be on the mailing list for the new rules book. CMCS sponsored a rules seminar last

year which was well-received. Look for an announcement in the fall for a rules seminar that will address any

changes to the Racing Rules.

We need volunteers to help with Race Management for the Summerset Regatta. We need two mark boats – one

for each racing area - each with a two-person crew to set and move marks under the direction of the Principal

Race Officer. Smaller power boats are best suited to this task. We could also use some helpers to assist the

Race Officer on each of the signals boats. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Steve Roake

[email protected] for further information.

Here it is already ~ May, Memorial Weekend ~ Danger Island Cruise, Russell

Vance, ―The Governor for Life of Danger Island‖ and his lovely spouse, Kathleen

on ―Shadowfax‖ are overseeing the Events beginning Fri., May 25th thru Mon.

28th (Memorial Day). Reminder ~ Change of location to Pelican Bay behind

Caya Costa. Always a great time!!! With lots of Boats!!!! There is a very

informative column by Governor Russell in regards to this favorite event.

Not too soon for planning for those June Cruises. The ―10,000 Island Cruise‖

is a distance event for over a week of sailing and island hopping beginning June

1st. Carol & Ben Preston on Kestrel III are the cruise leaders. This cruise is

not for the faint of heart but always fun journey south to Everglades City and

other ports of call South. Contact Carol and Ben in regards to your intend to participate in all or part

of this cruise. Their contact information is in the Annual Calendar/Directory.

Fisherman’s Village Cruise begins June 13th thru 17th (Fathers Day). Bob and Bev Duff aboard

―Chase the Clouds‖ are hosting this event. CMCS has a ―blanket reservation‖ for slips and all

reservations for this cruise must be made thru the cruise leaders (Fisherman’s Village will not take

individual reservations for this event). Please provide boat name, skipper and fundamental information

of the boat. Dockage rate is very competitive and we always have a great time on this cruise. Tentative

cruise itinerary is part of this Chowder Chatter. First evening is anchoring out at Useppa or Pelican bay

and many dinghy over to Cabbage Key for dinner. Thurs, Fri. and Sat. the plans are for marina comforts

at Fisherman’s Village Marina and Resort.

The May going North Cruise was loosely attended by Kestrel III and Bridget O’Toole and I am

thinking they meandered all the way to Sarasota. Chase the Clouds along with Air Supply, Passion III,

Barefeet and Macusula all did the David Island Tampa to Fort Myers Race. Great fun getting the boats

delivered to Davis Island Yacht Club with more than enough wind to keep us moving under sail. The

start of the Race was Thurs. May 3rd off St. Petersburg and a great sail to the Skyway bridge, tacking

to the outer marker and then heading South to Fort Myers at 160*. It was close hauled but moving

nicely until the wind died off of Sarasota . . . After drifting backwards, checking all our I-phones,

weather scans and weather predictions made the decision to start the ―Iron Jib‖ for the balance of

the trip home. Congratulations to Macusula who hung in there sailing to the finish while the rest of us

rolled up the jibs and headed home via the ICW. We got to the dock at 8 am Friday. Of the 22 boats

who started, 10 dropped out ~ more par to the group who hung in there! It was great fun and would

encourage many to participate. Davis Island Yacht Club was a great host!

Look for all of you out on the water in the coming weeks. For now, fair winds, calm seas and just enough

breeze to keep the boats moving is all we ask.

rain showers whichever comes first). Some may wish to dingy over to beach for a stroll.

Thurs. 14th ~ ―Meander‖ to Fisherman’s Village Marina on the shore of Punta Gorda via

Charlotte Harbour for early afternoon arrival. This is a 4-5 hour trip so relax and enjoy the

sail. Once everyone is docked meet at the pool (weather permitting) to cool down. Pot Luck at

Marina Gathering room that evening. Be thinking of your favorite ―Aha! Moment on board‖ (25

words or less) to share with group. After dinner, the shopping area of Fisherman’s Village is

offering free music in center court and a short stroll along the river front short walk, at

Gilchrest Park for concert in the park.

Fri. 15th ~ Free day for Mall, lunch at the Village, walk around Punta Gorda (bikes

available at the Marina). Gather at the pool for cocktails (weather permitting) and grill out

(both gas and charcoal grills available). Bring a salad/ desert to share along with your favorite

grill item. After dinner entertainment at Fisherman’s Village at Center stage. Also, we could

take a Charlotte Harbour cruise if enough sailors want to for group rate.

Sat. 16th ~ May stay or may leave the Village (weather will dictate) and meander back to

Pelican Bay anchorage for the night. ―Chase‖ will be staying Saturday due to family

commitments and leaving early Sunday morning.

Sun. 17th ~ Drop the dock lines or Up the anchors and head for home hopefully make the

docks before the storms break.

Our cell phones will be on ~ 239-278-3733 through Bev’s office and Bob’s cell is 239-850-

8701. We’ve had several cruises there and it is a great facility. Any questions, please feel

free to give us a call. See you Wednesday (Yes, I know some members are heading to

Fisherman’s Village before and after).

Please join Chase the Clouds (Bob & Bev Duff), for a long weekend of cruising and social-

izing with final destination of Fisherman’s Village in Punta Gorda. There is pool and A/C at

the end of the long cruise day! The Marina cost is $2.00 foot dockage and daily electric

fee of $2.50 to $5 depending on amps needed ~ a great rate! All services are available

for boaters with their very personable staff. Cruise working channel is ―72‖ and ―Chase‖

monitors ―16‖ at all times then, when called, switch to working channel . Please hail us on

―16‖ then we’ll switch to working channel.

A huge thank you goes to all the CMCS for their

love and support the past months since Jerry

has been gone. The club turn-out for

the memorial service was beyond expecta-

tions. All your kind thoughts, cards, emails, and

visits have been so much appreciated. Our 40

years here in SW Florida have been spent

mainly on the water, racing and cruising with

CMCS, which is why we live here and love it.

Keep on sailing,

Thank You CMCS

Bright Lights On The LCW

Report From S/V Chase The Clouds

We came down the ICW from Boca Grande

EARLY yesterday ( May 8) and all the lit marks

are now led. That's good news. But they are so

bright it screws up your perspective. It's hard

to

tell if the light you are seeing is the next one or

one after that. Why we were doing the ICW at

that hour is another story.

it, it is beautiful. Many thanks to the Cape Coral Art

League for their many entries for our consideration. It

was a very difficult decision. We’ll look forward to

meeting Jan at the Saturday night cocktail party on Oc-

tober 6th. Cindy Naumann has created a beautiful flyer

featuring the Summerset regatta. We would like to see them posted around various

nautical businesses frequented by sailors around the area. Let me know if your fa-

vorite establishment would like one.

Morgan Stanley and Scanlon Lexus of Ft. Myers have already come through with their sponsorships. Be sure to

express appreciation to these organizations for their support if you have a chance to interact with them. We will

have a long way to go, it takes a community to step up and come through with such major support of youth sailing.

Finally, if you know of a potential sponsor who would like to do business with more sailors, such as a dock builder,

please let me know and I will get you the forms you need. They are also available on the Summerset Regatta web-

site – check it out and let me know how you like it. We are also in need of door prize donations, so if your con-

tacts cannot become $100 or $250 sponsors, maybe they can contribute a gift certificate or some other meaning-

ful gift. Thanks for helping make this the most successful regatta yet!

THE FRANKLIN LOCKS INDEPENDENCE DAY CRUISE

PART A FRIDAY, JUNE 29 – MONDAY, JULY 2

There are still a limited number of boat slips that can be reserved at www.recreation.gov, so book now or grab one of the four first-

come-first-serve slips. This is a cruise by sea or by land, so reserve your RV or trailer site if you have to leave your boat behind.

Activities planned for Part A will include:

Friday – 6/29 5:00 Happy Hour at the Shelter

Saturday – 6/30 10:00 Dinghy Ride up the river to Hickey Creek

5:00 Happy Hour

6:30 Grill/Potluck

Sunday – 7/1 Relax, fun and games, chill out

6:00 Smoked pulled pork—please bring a dish to share i.e. cole slaw, baked beans, buns

Monday – 7/2 Pack up and head for home or stay for Part B and enjoy the local fireworks

Don Lawson and Joan Perkett will be your hosts for Part A. Give us a call at 239-542-5918 if you would like to join us for the Sunday

BBQ and let us know what you will be bringing. We smoked pork a few years ago and had a really good feed. Bikers, hikers, trikers

and cars are all welcome.

―PART B‖ – RIVER CRUISE AND DOCKAGE MONDAY, JULY 2 – THURSDAY, JULY 5

The Independence Day Cruise to the Franklin Locks a/k/a/ the ―July 4th Cruise Part B‖, is the third most exciting cruise of

the year. If you missed a cruise this year, do not miss this one. There will be guarantees you will have a great time.

We expect eight to ten cruisers, our RV contingent, as well as a few U-hauls of day-trippers and our motorcycle gang. We usually

have thirty members, plus guests and fourteen dogs, for our three nighttime BBQ’s.

The Franklin Locks Campground is located on the north side of the lock, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. We will have

more information later this month on the lock opening schedule. There are eight boat slips ($24.00 per night) with electric and

water. Four of these slips have been reserved by CMCS. The remaining four slips are available on a first come, first serve basis. In

the past, CMCS has always had the eight slips. There is a large lagoon adjacent to marina and boat ramp. This lagoon will hold one

aircraft carrier or thirty sailboats comfortably. The lagoon is fresh water, 12 feet deep, with no tide and no current.

The 12.5-mile trip from the City Dock of Fort Myers, will take you under the Caloosahatchee Bridge, under the two Edison

Bridges, through the open train bridge, under the Route 75 Bridge, through the Wilson Pigott drawbridge at Route 31 and into the

Franklin Lock. Exiting the Lock you will turn to port, around the channel marker, into the anchorage and docking facilities.

The Campground has beautiful bathrooms and showers. Our area will have four large picnic tables with an overhead enclosure. We

will have a giant BBQ grill for everyone to throw on coals and cook their dinner at the same time. We plan to eat together on all

three nights, so bring some items to grill, a few dishes to share and plenty of charcoal.

Every year we have a very exciting dinghy ride through Hickey Creek. If you are arriving by camper, think about bringing you dinghy

or bumming a ride. We will see some camels, bison, several breeds of horses and some ―Deliverance‖ homes, along with the light sound

of banjo music on this trip. On the game side, there will be the annual CMCS Trivial Pursuit Championship, Butt Dart Contest, and the

newly popular Crappie Toss. Several more games are planned, but we will need to keep a lid on them for now.

Directions for our members traveling to the Campground by car, motorcycle or skateboard: I-75 to Exit 141, following SR80 to SR31.

Turn north on SR31, travel four miles to SR78. Turn east on SR78 for three miles to North Franklin Lock Road. Follow signs to camp-

ground. Any questions, call Russell & Kathleen Vance at 471-2757, or email us at [email protected].

July is mid-term for CMCS and a great time for someone to take advantage of

our 1/2 price offer.

Yes, a NEW membership is 50% of a full years’ cost. Bargains all around here!!

So if anyone knows of someone ―Thinking ― about joining the best sailing organi-

Hope I can count on several people at the Memorial Cruise to get photos of

members on their boats for the next issue of the Annual Calendar. Trying very

hard to identify the seasoned members as well as newer ones with their boats

and smiles.

Looking forward to seeing the CMCS Burgee flying on many members boats along our waterways. Be

sure to hail them when you seen the CMCS burgee waving from the starboard spreaders.
