MUSINGS FROM MATT
Ash Wednesday is this next week (March 1st) and that means the season of Lent is upon us. This
penitential season is so often related to sorrow and shame for our sinfulness. The gloom of sack
cloth and ashes can be so overwhelming. But remember there is more. Because Lent concludes
with Easter morning. We know the end of the story. This path, no matter how foreboding, ends at
an empty tomb - a victory, a celebration. That is why in the Ash Wednesday worship service, the
imposition of ashes is followed by Holy Communion. As the ashes remind us of our finiteness, the
Lord’s Table brings us together in God’s infinite grace.
Think about that for a moment. In one brief service of worship, we already walk the entire Lenten
road. From mortality to resurrection. And we have the entire season of Lent then, to give thanks
to God for that all powerful and mysterious grace. Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a little old
fashioned Calvinist Repentance. Bring on the sack cloth and ashes and solemn worship. I’m all for
it that is, as long as it concludes with the celebration of Christ’s victory. Lent leads us from the
doom and gloom to the light of our salvation.
We will begin this Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday worship on March 1st at 2:00 and 6:30 PM.
Join us for prayer, singing, ashes and the Lord’s Supper. And to continue
your Lenten Spiritual nurture, we will be having a series of Worship/
Dinner/Studies on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM in the Social Hall.
May you have a Holy Lent and may you draw near to God.
Shalom,
Matt The Reverend
Matthew T. Robinson,
Pastor

FOOTPRINTS . . . AL EVANS
There’s a North Pole and a South Pole. Is the North Pole better
known because that jolly white whiskered red suit fella lives there?
Or does the South Pole also have a jolly red suit fellow and togeth-
er share an equatorial border? You know it’s ‘tough sledding with
no snow.’ Oooo aaaah maytee, ya arra a pushing things a wee bit.
Whaale ya know magnets have a north and a south pole too. And
we know they can “pull things together” or “push things apart.”
We have poles too, but not like the Polish, their ‘genetic Poles!’
What’s in your genetics – your magnets?
At men’s’ group discussion, it was stated “genetics statistics differ-
ences are minimal!” I’m not going this route, except to note, we all have ‘magnetic make ups to: Motivate;
Advocate; be a Giver; to Nurture; be Enthusiastic; a Teacher! That’s life! We are magnets – to ourselves and
to others around us. Jesus’ magnet is always attracting us to “come, follow Him,” walk in His footsteps, be a
magnet for Him to others, sharing His magnetic ways in you, with others, so they too, learn to ‘cling to Him’
and ‘attract’ others to follow. We know, in Jesus – there is no east or west – just “love one another – as I
have loved you.” “What a magnetic together journey” we experience – nurturing and sharing with others the
warmth of His overflowing loving grace placed in us to share. Let God’s ‘Magnetic Blessings’ motivate us to
be advocators for Him, be givers, nurturing enthusiastically, as teachers do and occurs, is seen, dis-
played and heard in Westminster Church.
Yes, we can be, we are “Magnets for Christ” that helps others to see eyes of caring, to hear ears of under-
standing, to feel the heart of compassion Jesus has for them. Nurturing His love to glow brightly in all on the
journey Jesus desires each to follow. “Shine Jesus, shine . . .”

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN'S LUNCHEON
Monday, February 27, 2017
Lunch will be served at 12 noon. Lunch will be provided by the
Coordinating Team. Dessert will be provided by BYKOTA Circle.
Elizabeth (Ellie) Carlson, who has been a museum curator for twenty-five
years, will present a program on "Aprons". Ellie is presently the Curator of
Costume for the Winnetka Historical Society.
Ellie completed her professional internship at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in the
Division of Costume. She performs several characters in the 19th and early 20th century at first person
interpretations. She gives lectures, workshops and programs to groups on various Domestic Arts topics.
From Adam and Eve to the Food Network, aprons have been a part of human existence. They cover clothing,
sometimes act in place of clothing, carry food, kindling, children, and have even played a role in seduction.
Come and hear more about the apron. If you have a favorite apron or one from your own collection, please
bring it and share your story.
Reservations are necessary. Please sign the sheet on the congregation desk or phone the church office (815-
725-6687) by Thursday, February 23.
Looking forward to our first get-together in 2017.
