Welcome to the Shirat HaNefesh Congregation!

Beginning in August, Shirat HaNefesh (which means “Song of the Spirit”) began worshipping in our Community Room. They are a welcoming, plu-ralistic Jewish community in “close in” Montgomery County that:

Expresses its Jewish faith and heritage through prayer, joyous songs, study, and Tikkun Olam (social action to repair the world);

Welcomes everybody, including interfaith families; Provides interactive Jewish learning and growth opportunities for all ages; Gives all members an equal voice. Through this relationship, our congregation and Shirat HaNefesh have banded together to refurbish the Community Room with new flooring, lighting and window coverings. While the room remains a multi-purpose room, open to public use, Shi-rat HaNefesh will be using the room on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings for Worship, as well as using a couple of classrooms for educational purposes.

Update—Music Search Committee With 29 applications received, the Music Search Committee is now in the process

of interviewing potential candidates for the position of Director of Music Minis-

tries. There are some exciting possibilities and the Committee is looking forward

to making a decision in the very near future! Until the position is filled, we will

continue to have our own and guest musicians providing music for worship. Once

the new staff person is on board, we will look forward to a new and creative

start for NCCCC musical opportunities. A special thanks to those serving on the

current committee: Sally Coberly, Anne-Marie Crawford, Robert Solomon, Mau-

rine Zamberlan, with Glenn Zuber and Cheryl Tatham as ex-officio.

Worship with us in September Sunday, September 2 — 11:00 a.m. Worship

Guest Minister, Rev. Dr. Mary Ellen Huzzard

Rev. Dr. Mary Ellen Huzzard, an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church, retired from full time ministry with the Baltimore-Washington Conference on June 30, 2012. She served a number of churches in the D.C.-Maryland area, lastly as lead Pastor of Ashton UMC, Ashton, MD. Rev. Huzzard graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, and earned a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C. She received the Doctor of Ministry from Drew School of Theology, Madison, New Jersey. During her ministry she underwent training in hospital chaplaincy at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Sibley Hospital, both located in Washington, D.C. She is a trained Stephen Leader. Bringing her gifts of pastoral care to NC4, she has volunteered to assist Dr. Tatham in doing some visitation with our shut-ins. Mary Ellen is a native of Gulfport, MS, but was raised in Lancaster, PA. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, cooking, world travelling, classical music, and theatre. She is married to Robert Weesner, Village Manager for North Chevy Chase Village.

Special Guest Musicians — the Eddie Drennon Trio (Eddie Drennon on violin, our own Glenn Pearson on piano, and Jon Nazdin on double bass, with

guest vocalist)

Special Guest artist/preacher: Dr. Deborah Sokolove Director of the Henry Luce III Center for the Arts and Religion, Wesley Theological Seminary, where she also teaches courses

in art and worship Dr. Sokolove says of her work: “In these works, I am attempting to evoke this sense of eter-nity, of the divine presence, that I find in these traditional art forms, as well as in the gleam of flickering candles, or in a night sky filled with stars.” She will share with us more about her art which will be on display at the church from September 9 through the 16th.

Sunday, September 9 — 11:00 a.m. Worship First in our series on “Spirituality and Art: Conversation about Connection”

“God in the Movies”

Whether it’s George Burns as God in the film “O, God!” made in 1977 to the latest Harry Potter film, many movies offer a rich depository of images that celebrate the hu-man spirit and put us in touch with the Divine. With the help of a select choice of film

clips, we’ll be off and running with our conversation about “God in the Movies.” Come prepared to reflect on the movies that have touched you or caused you to think more deeply than you would have imagined!

Sunday, September 23 — 11:00 a.m. Worship Regular service of worship — ALL ARE WELCOME!

Rev. Dr. Huzzard will be preaching for us again, as Dr. Tatham and Rev. Zuber are away at the Bethany Beach Family Retreat.

Sunday, September 30 — 11:00 a.m. Worship Worship in the style of Taizé with Icons

Once again we enter into a style of worship that is contemplative as we hear words of scrip-ture, chant the songs of Taizé, and as we view the beautiful iconic images in the Byzantine style of iconography. Tom Xenaris, a local iconographer, will be with us in worship to share the Orthodox Christian tradition of “writing” icons. The Orthodox consider making icons more a form of prayer than art, and they believe the iconographer's hand is guided by God.

Sunday, October 7 — 11:00 a.m. Worship World Communion Sunday

We will conclude our series “Spirituality and Art: Conversation about Connection” with a

series of portraits of Disciples clergy and lay leaders entitled “Holy Commun-ion” painted by Rev. Jolin Wilks McElroy, minister of First Christian Church, Charlotte, NC. Jolin was formerly the associate of First Christian Church, Falls Church. During her 2004 Sabbatical, Jolin was awarded a Lily Foundation Grant for Clergy Renewal and spent some of her time at Bethany College, where she met with, painted and talked to Disciples clergy and lay leaders about being Disciples, and about the im-portance of communion in the life of the church. With our special guest, Dr. Dick Hamm, we will share together the “art” of Communion as it is understood as both “community” and the partaking of “The Lord’s Supper.” Communion on this

Sunday will be by coming forward to receive the elements of bread and cup (those not coming forward will be served in the pews).

The Class meets at 9:45 a.m. in the Memorial Chapel and welcomes all! THE FORUM CLASS resumes Sunday, September 9: Enjoying an open dialogue format, the Forum Class resumes this month with new and intri-guing studies. Using both written material, videos, and internet, under the guidance of Jewel Barlow, the class will explore a variety of current and relevant topics. AND there’s always a fresh pot of coffee and some goodies to enjoy as well! 9:30 a.m. Sunday mornings.

ADULT CLASSES

Elementary Age Class (grades 1-5)

Holy Moly captures the imagination of kids by bringing the Bible to life. Kids walk away from class excitedly retelling the stories they just learned and eagerly awaiting what’s next. Here’s how it works:

Discover: Each Holy Moly lesson starts with an animated Bible story retelling

and an activity to jump start kids’ imaginations about what they’ll see and do!

Relate: Next, kids talk about the story they just watched. Kids relate to the Bible story and each other. They talk about what surprised them & what

made them wonder!

Connect: Then, through the pages of the Holy Moly Bible Storybooks & Con-nect Bible, kids read or listen to the story again as a way to ground the les-

son in scripture.

Create: Finally, creativity flows as kids complete activities that reinforce the

lessons they watch in the story retelling.

COME JOIN THE FUN!

YOUTH (grades 6-12)

Sunday School for our middle & high school age youth will resume Sunday,

September 2.

YOUTH in September

The 2012 Reconciliation Offering will be received on September 30 and October 7.

The Special Offering is used to fund the Disciple’s mission priority to become a pro-reconciling/ anti-racist

church. Funds from this offering are providing for leadership development in our camps, our communities and

our congregations as well as providing resources to promote small group study and community-action.

One grant recipient provided the following testimonial regarding their work –

“Because of the grant that our local congregation – based organizing network BREAD (Building Responsibility,

Equality and Dignity) received from Reconciliation Ministry, our congregation has been part of a movement that

actually changes systems – whether it is predatory lending, education, institutional racism, or unfair housing

practices. …This year we are working collaboratively on Juvenile Justice. Last year we were able to reduce by

half the number of youth in detention. I have learned that the work of ‘doing justice’ is slow and cannot be done

alone. It requires perseverance and the willingness to work with others.”

FALL 2012 and SPRING 2013

North Chevy Chase Christian Church has made a commitment to participate in two one-day Service Build projects sponsored by Habitat for Humanity. We will be working with Habitat on 3 sets of Townhomes designated as the Maple Hill Project in Gaithersburg. Due to unforeseen delays in acquiring Montgomery County building permits our original dates have been pushed back. We are scheduled to volunteer on Saturday, November 10, 2012 and looking ahead to next year, Saturday May 11, 2013. Be sure and put theses dates on your calendar! For more information, contact Nancy Longo ([email protected]).

Facilities Update

People come and go during the summer months but the church building stays put and work continues to be done on it. The outside trim and doors were painted, as well as the restrooms at Harlow Hall. A vanity stool was added to the ladies’ room on the sanctuary level. Directional signs have been placed throughout the building. In con-junction with our agreement with the Shirat HaNefesh congregation, the Community

Room has been refurbished.

The high point of the summer was the dedication of the extension of the elevator to the upper educational wing where the Regional Offices are housed and where Nao-mi Kusano teaches piano. A huge thanks to Hume McClure for overseeing the work

and for sharing the history of it at during the dedication in worship.

I want to thank those folks who stayed after worship on August 5 to clean the boiler room and rooms on the upper level. A special thanks to Patsy Clark who has contin-ued each week to clean out the file cabinets in the Historical Archives room. Also a special thank you to Virginia

McIntire and Martin Biles for vacuuming the furniture in Weir Lounge.

In anticipation of the up-coming sermon series and guest artists, new art hanging rails are being installed in the office area hallway. There will be an exhibit of art Sunday, September 9-16 by artist Deborah Sokolove of Wesley Theological Seminary. This work provides us with the opportunity to exhibit the work of local artists

and brightens up our hallway.

Many people do many things and I thank all of you.

On Sunday, June 24th two vans left the NC4 driveway and embarked on what would be a VERY special mission trip. This year, though we were a small group of two adults (Daniela Helton and Ann McClure) and five youth (Kylie Sherman, Nichole Hawkins, Josh Gatera, Brandon and Arrey Takang), we were mighty in mission and effort. We arrived at the campus of Alvernia University in Reading, PA full of expectations. Shortly after getting settled, we learned in a big group meeting, that Reading is one of the poorest cities in the United States – once a thriving industrial and railroad town, many of its residents now live in poverty in dilapidated homes with little means to make much needed repairs and improvements. Through our work with Group Mission Trips and Berks County Housing Authority we were able to help four different households in the Reading area (there were 63 work groups and 58 housing sites!). Our boys were dividing among three different work groups and sites, while the girls stuck together and welcomed help from some young men from Michigan (Austin) and Massachusetts (Dan), as we strived to help a homeowner named Genecka (who was an amazingly kind and generous woman), her disabled adult son, “Tony,” and their cute little pug-huahua, “Miracle,” – yes, a pug-chihuahua mix can be cute! Genecka’s house had holes in the ceilings and walls from water damage. The window sills were literally falling out of the house, and squirrels had chewed an enormous (and hard to locate!) hole behind a gutter and downspout and were running around inside the house between floors. There was also a lot of wood rot and a very unsecure back door. De-spite a long (very long!) list, and limited time (and know-how!), we were a determined group – we worked very hard and learned a lot in one short week (thank you for the phone consultations Dan, Hume and Wayne!). We left Ge-necka’s living room and stairway to the second floor with holes patched, sanded and smoothed and a fresh coat of paint. The rear exterior of the home was scraped, primed and painted, we made sure the evicted squirrels would not be able to get back in, and installed new window sills and also patched or replaced rotted wood (did you know you can use Bondo Body Filler, typically used for auto body work, to patch wood? Consider this a valuable tip from your NC4 Youth!). Kylie became an expert at measuring for and installing weather stripping. And, Nichole was a tireless, ener-getic working in a hot, dark and dusty house – she never gave up! The boys also found themselves in similar situations – residents who needed a lot of help… There were big learning curves but willing hands and strong backs. When we got together in the evenings, we’d catch each other up on what went on at our respective houses. Brandon was lucky enough to have a very appreciative home-owner – though she couldn’t speak English, through the language of home-cooked Caribbean lunches, she conveyed how very appreciative she was to have them there working every day. Brandon grinned ear-to-ear when talking about how nice his resident was and how good her cooking was! The programs put on by the Group Work Camps staff were also very meaningful. We really enjoyed growing and wor-shiping, together, in our relationship with God – we sang, we danced and we prayed. We represented our Church well and we had fun together. Josh, Brandon and Arrey turned out to be great networkers and NC4 ambassadors… They met tons of new friends from all over the East Coast and found out about a State park, Blue Marsh Lake, which we vis-ited on our “afternoon off.” In fact, the friendships they made there were so special, that they’ve since taken a trip to Groton, MA to visit their new group of friends. But, maybe one of the most impressive things about the trip was the earnestness, sincerity and deep thoughtfulness of our Youth. In the evenings, when we came together, after a long day of work, followed by dinner and worship, we

would meet for devotions. And, we shared – a lot – with each other. Everyone was very transparent and so incred-ibly thoughtful. Kylie and Nichole shared their thoughts and experiences, their concerns about heading off to col-lege and details about relationships that had impacted their lives. Brandon and Josh, more than once, asked to lead the prayer – and these prayers were meaningful, reflective, expressive, full of gratitude and insight and keen observation. They were really impressive and I could tell, one evening while watching three young ladies run up to Arrey and embrace him like they’d been lifelong friends, that this trip really impacted them. They, in turn, impact-ed and improved the lives of their residents and they were deeply impacted by the people they met and by the shared experience.

Here are some of their thoughts, in their words, on what the trip meant to them: “This year’s mission trip was really my favorite. I met some people this year that I felt so close to. It changed me. It changed my view on things. It got me really close to God and it was the best thing that has happened so far in my life. It was life-changing and I will never forget it.” – Josh Gatera “I really enjoyed helping our resident and the opportunity to strength-en relationships with my youth group.” – Nichole Hawkins “The mission trip was fun and good and exciting – I loved it. And, my

favorite part was helping the resident I worked for and also the fun I had and the friends I made.” – Arrey Takang “I felt like the mission trip, this year, was one of the best weeks of my life. It came at the right time because it gave me time to reflect on my perspective on certain aspects of my life. I met some friends I will never forget. I grew even closer with my youth group members. If I could go back in time and re-start the mission trip week, I would.” – Brandon Takang “To me the mission trip was a great way to get closer as a youth group and to meet new people who share similar beliefs while helping to make someone’s life just a little bit brighter.” -- Kylie Sherman In summary, it was an amazing and very special mission trip. Thank you, NC4, for helping make it possible – thanks for your support, your generosity and your prayers… The youth have expressed, repeatedly, that they can’t wait to do it again. And, on a side note, as an adult who felt like I was doing, “the right thing,” and I was giving my time and my energy to help out with this trip, I received much more than I gave… I learned so much – and, I am so thankful for the way our Youth shared their talents, their energy, their insight and their love. I am also so very thankful for Daniela’s God-given organizational skills -- there were so many facets to this trip that she organized, managed, coordinated, mo-tivated, fund-raised, etc. I actually can’t do justice to how much effort and coordination she put into this – from filling out forms, organizing tools and rental cars, motivating kids, double and triple checking schedules and materi-als, and on and on (I was blown away)… Thanks to all who made this possible.—Ann McClure
