Words from the Pastor…Dear friends and members,

Christ is Risen! He is risen indeed. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

I greet you in the peace and in the love of the resurrected Christ on this Easter Season. I hope this letter finds you well. I miss seeing each of you, but I am hopeful that we will see each other soon. We are in May and June; not to mention this is the time in which the weather begins to get warmer and nature blooms. Yet, we continue to live during tough and difficult times in which we are still practicing physical distancing, being at home and going out when necessary, and we might feel alone. However, Christ has not abandoned us. The risen Christ continues to comfort, sustain, and strengthen us during these uncertain times. The future looks uncertain at this moment and you probably have changed and canceled plans that you were looking forward to, not only with your family and friends but also with your church family. I know I have, and it has been heartbreaking since I was looking forward to being part of and get to know each of you more. It is easy to fall into despair during this pandemic situation and feel anxious and stressed about the future. This situation has shown us how little control we have over our lives. Yet, I want us to focus on the positive side of this difficult situation, this situation has given us a different point of view of doing ministry, that even myself did not imagine doing such as preaching live on Facebook. I want us to take this opportunity to reflect on these coming weeks on what God is asking us to do when it comes to doing ministry. This is the opportunity to connect with loved ones and/or friends who you have not talked to in a while, connect and support communities who have been marginalized and oppressed in the past, and reflect in your own personal lives on what you need to change so that when we reunite again, we will come back renewed in spirit and ready to do God’s work in the community.

I want to thank everyone for being supportive and helpful during these difficult times with each other and with myself. This situation with the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult to navigate on a personal level and as a pastor. But each one of you has been incredible and amazing at being patient with me as I find ways of bringing the Word of God to you each Sunday morning, as well as finding ways of connecting with each of you and continue caring for each one. I cannot imagine how this pandemic has also impacted and affected you, but I encourage you to continue finding ways of connecting with each other and praying for one another.

Thank you to those who continue doing ministry among the challenges. I want to also thank those who have been able to give financially to the church, your generosity is needed in these hard times. I understand that this situation has brought unexpected situations in the lives of some of you so do not feel pressured or obligated to give if you are not able to contribute at this moment to the church, take care of yourselves first. God knows the sincerity of our hearts and understands, be in prayer for our church. If you need help, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or someone who you trust, this is the time to lean on one another and support each other. I leave you with these words, Jesus tells us: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27) Let us continue blooming during this spring and Easter season, leaving our troubles and worries to God and fill our hearts with his love and peace.

Remember, Christ is Risen! He is risen indeed. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

¡Cristo ha resucitado! Él ha resucitado. ¡Aleluya, aleluya, aleluya!

Los saludo en la paz y en el amor del Cristo resucitado en esta temporada de Pascua. Espero que estén bien. Extraño verlos a todos, pero tengo la esperanza de que nos veremos pronto. Estamos en mayo y junio; sin mencionar que este es el momento en que el clima comienza a calentarse y florece la naturaleza. Sin embargo, seguimos viviendo durante tiempos difíciles en los que todavía practicamos distanciamiento físico, estamos en casa y salimos cuando es necesario, y podríamos sentirnos solos. Sin embargo, Cristo no nos ha abandonado. El Cristo resucitado continúa consolándonos, sosteniéndonos y fortaleciéndonos durante estos tiempos inciertos.

El futuro parece incierto en este momento y probablemente ustedes hayan cambiado y cancelado planes no solo con su familia y amigos, sino también con la iglesia. Yo he tenido que hacerlo también, y ha sido lamentable no estar juntos. Es fácil caer en la desesperación durante esta situación de pandemia y sentirse ansioso y estresado por el futuro. Esta situación nos ha demostrado cuán poco control tenemos sobre nuestras vidas. Sin embargo, quiero que nos centremos en el lado positivo de esta difícil situación, esta situación nos ha dado un punto de vista diferente de hacer ministerio, que ni siquiera yo imaginaba hacer, como por ejemplo predicar en vivo en Facebook. Quiero que aprovechemos esta oportunidad para reflexionar en las próximas semanas sobre lo que Dios nos pide que hagamos. Esta es la oportunidad de conectarse con sus seres queridos y/o amigos con los que no ha hablado durante un tiempo, conectarse y apoyar con comunidades que han sido marginadas y oprimidas en el pasado, y reflexionar en sus propias vidas personales sobre lo que necesita cambiar. para que cuando nos reunamos nuevamente, volvamos renovados en espíritu y listos para hacer el trabajo de Dios en la comunidad.

Quiero agradecer a todos por ser solidarios durante estos tiempos difíciles entre nosotros y conmigo mismo. Esta situación con la pandemia de COVID-19 ha sido difícil de navegar a nivel personal y como pastor. Pero cada uno de ustedes ha sido increíble y asombroso al ser paciente conmigo mientras encuentro maneras de llevarles la Palabra de Dios cada domingo por la mañana, así como encontrar formas de conectarme con cada uno de ustedes y seguir cuidando de cada uno. No puedo imaginar cómo esta pandemia también ha impactado y afectado a cada uno de ustedes, pero los animo a que continúen encontrando formas de conectarse entre sí y orando por los demás.

También quiero agradecer a aquellos que han podido dar financieramente a la iglesia, su generosidad es necesaria en estos tiempos difíciles. Entiendo que esta situación ha traído situaciones inesperadas en la vida de algunos de ustedes, así que no se sientan presionados u obligados a dar si no pueden contribuir en este momento a la iglesia, cuídense primero. Dios conoce la sinceridad de nuestros corazones y entiende, estén en oración por nuestra iglesia. Si necesita ayuda, no dude en comunicarse conmigo o con alguien en quien confíe, este es el momento de apoyarse mutuamente. Los dejo con estas palabras, Jesús nos dice: “Paz, te dejo; mi paz te doy. No te la doy como la da el mundo. No dejes que tu corazón se turbe y no tengas miedo ". (Juan 14:27) Sigamos floreciendo durante esta temporada de primavera y Pascua, dejando nuestros problemas y preocupaciones a Dios y llenando nuestros corazones con su amor y paz.

¡Recuerde, Cristo ha resucitado! Él ha resucitado. ¡Aleluya, aleluya, aleluya!

Patricia BonillaI am a native of the Northwest Suburbs, growing up in the Vernon hills area and attending Lake Forest College earning a BA in International Relations and French and later attending Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary (G-ETS) earning an MA in Christian Education and Drew University-School of Theology for an MA in Philosophy. I recently restarted my PhD studies at G-ETS. Let us walk in faith together!

Rev. Cassandra NúñezRev. Cassandra Núñez is a Local License Pastor in the United Methodist Church. Born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Pastor Cassy immigrated to the United States when she was 9 years old. She is a beneficiary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Thus, immigration is a big part of Cassy’s work with the Hispanic/Latino community. She began her journey into ministry in 2014 as part of the Hispanic Leadership Apprenticeship Program in the Texas Annual Conference. Today, she is serving as Associate Pastor at Bering Memorial UMC in the heart of Houston, TX. Her work includes bridging communities and creating spaces where folks can worship together in a celebration of their true identity in Christ.

Most United Methodists know Bishop Reuben Job’s paraphrase of Wesley’s General Rules: do no harm, do good and stay in love with God. Many times people stumble over the fact that Wesley put “do no harm” first. Shouldn’t you just jump to doing good?I think this coronavirus has offered us an opportunity to see how “do no harm” comes first. One of the best ways to do no harm these days is to practice social distancing, to shelter in place, and to be considerate of others at the grocery store or out on the street by keeping a distance. Do no harm is the stage we’re still in as a church. It seems like every couple of days I have to choose between doing no harm and allowing people to do good. I have to remind people that they can’t hold their usual food programs because it’s not safe for them to prepare the food and they can’t keep social distance as they do, much less as they hand it out. I have to say no to weddings in churches. And that’s for heterosexual people! I have to tell clergy and churches alike that you put yourselves and others at risk by trying to produce worship services in sanctuaries with others present, musicians or technicians. I still hear reports that some clergy are handing out communion without practicing any form of social distancing and others are wanting to call on parishioners door to door.

Doing no harm means we can’t do the things we’re called to do: provide the services of the church in Jesus’ name! Yes, it goes against our grain! But we’re in the stage of doing no harm…no exceptions! We’ve got to flatten the curve and we do that by doing no harm!

And then we’ll be able to do good again. We’ll be able to provide ministry to those in need, care in a more personal way, and the sacraments of the church. I can’t wait for the day we’re able to do good again in relation to some of these services of the church! But as the governor of California said, “There’s no light switch here,” meaning all of a sudden we’re back doing what we used to do. “It’s more like a dimmer switch,” meaning that it will be gradual and perhaps different in various places. I pray that this time of doing no harm will increase our desire, creativity, and energy to do good when we can!

The third rule is to stay in love with God. Which means we use this time to grow in our spiritual practices and love for God and one another. Doesn’t it seem like many things that irked and divided us all seem so “pre-coronavirus”? I don’t mean that we don’t have differences any more but I do hope that we’ll stay in love with God by putting the preciousness of life in perspective in all that we do and say.

Another thing!

This week is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day! April 22, 1970, was the first Earth Day. Ten percent of the U.S. population took to the streets that day to call for cleaner air, water, and the care for endangered species. Over the years there have been times when air, water, and care for species have improved and then times, such as we are in now when things have gotten worse.

But during this pandemic, drastic improvements in air and water, in particular, have been seen in this short time as we have been sheltering-in-place. China first experienced a huge difference in air quality over the couple of months that they were sheltering in place. People in Los Angeles can see blue skies up above. Cities, such as Chicago, have lower air pollution, and even (to my eyes) less litter.

Don’t get me wrong: this isn’t a silver lining in a terrible pandemic and it’s definitely not a sustainable way to care for the Earth. But I do think it could sustain some hope and motivation to care for our planet. Many of us have gotten rather discouraged that anything could be done. That it’s too late. But now we have a glimpse that in fact, the Earth is amazing: it has the capacity to recover, repair and heal at least to a certain extent with a little help from us!

A Hopeful Earth—my niece Sarah hated the title! And in the over 10 years since we wrote this book together about Jesus and the environment, I actually see a glimmer of hope for the Earth!

While you continue to do no harm by sheltering in place, contemplate what you and maybe we as a nation can do so that along with us in this pandemic, the Earth can be safe and healthy for us and for generations to come. Happy Earth Day!

La mayoría de los Metodistas Unidos conocen la paráfrasis del Obispo Reuben Job de las Reglas Generales de Wesley: no hagas daño, haz el bien y ama a Dios. Muchas veces las personas tropiezan con el hecho de que Wesley puso "no hacer daño" primero. ¿No deberías primero hacer el bien?

Creo que este coronavirus nos ha ofrecido la oportunidad de ver cómo "hacer daño" es lo primero. Una de las mejores maneras de no hacer daño en estos días es practicar el distanciamiento social, refugiarse en el lugar y ser considerado con los demás en la tienda o en la calle manteniendo una distancia.

No hacer daño es la etapa en la que todavía estamos como iglesia. Parece que cada dos días tengo que elegir entre no hacer daño y permitir que las personas hagan el bien. Tengo que recordarles a las personas que no pueden mantener sus programas de comida habituales porque no es seguro para ellos preparar la comida y no pueden mantener la distancia social como lo hacen, y mucho menos cuando la reparten.

Tengo que decir no a las bodas en las iglesias. ¡Y eso es para las personas heterosexuales! Tengo que decirles a clérigos e iglesias por igual que se ponen en riesgo a sí mismos y a otros al tratar de producir servicios de adoración en santuarios con otras personas presentes, músicos o técnicos. Todavía escucho informes de que algunos clérigos están entregando la comunión sin practicar ningún tipo de distanciamiento social y otros quieren llamar a los feligreses de puerta en puerta.

No hacer daño significa que no podemos hacer las cosas que estamos llamados a hacer: ¡Proporcionar los servicios de la iglesia en el nombre de Jesús! ¡Sí, va en contra de nuestro grano! Pero estamos en la etapa de no hacer daño ... ¡sin excepciones! ¡Tenemos que aplanar la curva y lo haremos sin hacer daño!

Y luego podremos hacer el bien otra vez. Podremos proporcionar ministerio a los necesitados, cuidar de una manera más personal y los sacramentos de la iglesia. ¡No puedo esperar el día en que podamos hacer el bien nuevamente en relación con algunos de estos servicios de la iglesia! Pero como dijo el gobernador de CA, "No hay interruptor de luz aquí", lo que significa que de repente volvemos a hacer lo que solíamos hacer. "Es más como un interruptor de atenuación", lo que significa que será gradual y quizás diferente en varios lugares. ¡Estoy orando para que en este tiempo sin hacer daño aumente nuestro deseo, creatividad y energía para hacer el bien cuando podamos! La tercera regla es amar a Dios. Lo que significa que usamos este tiempo para crecer en nuestras prácticas espirituales y en el amor a Dios y a los demás. ¿No parece que muchas cosas que nos molestaron y dividieron a todos parecen tan "pre-coronavirus"? No quiero decir que ya no tengamos diferencias, pero espero que amemos a Dios al poner en perspectiva lo precioso de la vida en todo lo que hacemos y decimos.

¡Otra cosa!

¡Esta semana es el 50 aniversario del Día de la Tierra! El 22 de abril de 1970 fue el primer Día de la Tierra. El 10% de la población de los Estados Unidos salió a las calles ese día para pedir aire, agua y cuidado de las especies en peligro de extinción. A lo largo de los años, ha habido momentos en que el aire, el agua y el cuidado de las especies han mejorado y luego, como ahora, cuando las cosas han empeorado.

Pero durante esta pandemia, se han visto mejoras drásticas en el aire y el agua en particular en este corto tiempo, ya que nos hemos refugiado en el lugar. China antes que nosotros experimentó una gran diferencia en la calidad del aire durante los dos meses que estuvieron refugiándose en el lugar. La gente en Los Ángeles puede ver cielos azules. Las ciudades, como Chicago, tienen una menor contaminación del aire e incluso (a mi parecer) menos basura. No me malinterpreten: esto no es un resquicio de esperanza en una terrible pandemia y definitivamente no es una forma sostenible de cuidar la tierra. Pero sí creo que podría mantener algo de esperanza y motivación para cuidar la tierra. Muchos de nosotros nos hemos desanimado bastante de que se pueda hacer algo. Que ya es tarde. Pero ahora tenemos una idea de que, de hecho, la Tierra es increíble: ¡tiene la capacidad de recuperarse, reparar y sanar al menos en cierta medida con un poco de ayuda de nuestra parte!

“Una tierra esperanzada”-Sarah odiaba el título. Y en los más de 10 años desde que lo escribimos, realmente veo un rayo de esperanza para la tierra.

I have tried to write an individual thank you to everyone I can think of, but I do not want to miss anyone. I appreciate the calls from the church each week with greetings and a prayer and also the cards and notes from individuals.

This means a lot to those of us that are no longer able to attend church.

We have two services each Sundayaccessible via Zoom or Facebook Live

Service in English at 10:00 amService in Spanish at 11:30 am

An email is sent prior to the services with links to the two platforms and the bulletins for each service.
