President’s Message
Dear Members,
Last month I was in Canberra for the 11th National CBCA Conference - Discovering National Treasure. Highlights for me included meeting the National Treasures Bronwyn Bancroft, Nadia Wheatley and Andy Griffiths, the Conference Dinner at the Australian War Memorial and attending the opening of the Bob Graham retrospective exhibition – A Bird in the Hand. I look forward to the NSW conference in 2016. It’s been full steam ahead here where members of the committee have been busy behind the scenes chasing up lapsed members, organising the Judge’s Talks, sorting MYOSB entries, packing merchandise orders, planning the Book Week Dinner, updating the website, tidying up the archives, attending network meetings and other not so noticeable but important jobs which keep the WA Branch running smoothly. I am sad to inform you that I have accepted Caro Kay’s resignation as Director of the CBCA Board
and The CBCA WA Branch's Nominee which will come into effect from 24 July 2014. I would like to
take the opportunity to thank Caro for her service and outstanding contribution to CBCA National
Board, her professionalism and high standards in the performance of her duties. The CBCA WA
Branch has appreciated her work greatly, and her departure is regretted. I wish her and her family
every success in the future.
We are currently advertising and looking for an Expression of Interest to fill the Board Nominee’s
position. The closing date for the application is Friday 27 June 2014. For further information
regarding the Duty Statement and Position Description please find the details on the WA Branch
website.
I hope your Book Week plans are progressing well with incorporating authors and illustrators visits.
It is important for children and young people to connect with the creators, to bring stories and
literacy to life. Such experiences give an ongoing positive impact and the thrill of reading.
Regarding merchandising, if you missed the deadline for orders there may still be some
merchandise available – contact our merchandise manager via email:
Finally, I would like to congratulate Lesley Reece (WA CBCA Honorary Member and the Nan
Chauncy Winner 2010) who was the Finalist 2014 Western Australian of the Year Awards in the
Arts and Culture category. Lesley’s significant contribution through her work with the Literature
Centre, promoting and encouraging children’s literature, deserves recognition.
I look forward to seeing members at some our forthcoming celebratory events.
Aniek Ragan

From Our WA Judge : Anne-Marie Strother
I have spent the majority of my life in schools and education. I have always been involved in
teaching as an English teacher, an aerobic or Gymbaroo instructor and finally a librarian. My love
of reading was fanned early with evening family trips to the library, clothed in pyjamas and
snuggled into a corner reading anything I could find.
From an early age I forced my father to read Snugglepot and Cuddlepie with monotonous regularly
which resulted in a deep seeded hatred of Banksia nuts. Little Women soon followed as a
favourite, with it still holding a special place in my heart. I was fortunate to be part of a family who
firmly encouraged and fuelled a love of reading, so much so that my mother's Christmas present to
her children and grandchildren is always a book, one that is bought with care and love.
After teaching across the length and breadth of WA, I settled in Capel in the beautiful South West
region. I am a mother to two girls, 14 and 10, wife to Len, all of whom are also never without a
book.
In 2008 we, as a family, spent a year travelling around Australia. It was a unique and wonderful
experience, one also filled with many visits to town libraries, second-hand bookstores and
playgrounds. Our family joke is that we should write a book about our travels, entitled "Best places
to Play and Read around Australia".
I am excited and honoured to be a part of the judging panel for the
CBCA Book of the Year. Even if it means finding extra storage
space to house the many books I will read over the course of my
tenure.

Book Launches
Elaine Forrestal: “To See the World” by Jan Nicholls
On Thursday 1 May many supporters crowded into the theatre at the State Library of WA for the
opening of the Freycinet Journeys virtual exhibition and the launch of Elaine Forrestal’s new
children’s book To See the World which is based on the life of Rose de Freycinet, wife of Louis,
and their exploration of the Western Australian coast in the 19th Century.
Aimed at 8-12yr olds this is a story of adventure on the high seas at a time in history when ships
sailed the vast oceans of the world with only the wind to power them. Huge continents and tiny
islands lay in uncharted waters waiting to be added to the world map and, as the book outlines a
strong early connection between Australia and France, it was fitting that it should be launched by
Honorary French Consul, Monsieur Patrick Kedemos.
The Freycinet Collection of the State Library of Western Australia is a series of eighteen drawings,
engravings and watercolours. The images were made during and after two nineteenth-century
French maritime expeditions which visited the coast of Western Australia. The first of these
expeditions was undertaken by captain Nicolas Baudin from 1800 to 1804 in three vessels: firstly
the Géographe and the Naturaliste and later the Casuarina. The second expedition was under the
command of Louis de Freycinet in the vessel Uranie (and then the Physicienne) from 1817 to
1820.
The Freycinet Collection is so named because Louis de Freycinet (1779-1842) was a participant in
both expeditions, having been an officer on the Naturaliste during Baudin's circumnavigation of
Australia. The virtual exhibition can be viewed at www.freycinet.org.au at State Library.

Briony Stewart : Here in the Garden by Joanna Andrew
Here in the Garden, Briony
Stewart’s latest picture book, was
launched by Norman Jorgensen in
The Place at the State Library.
Original artworks and sketches from
the book were on display, and a
small room was transformed into a
garden where children were invited
to leave a flower they had created
with a message for someone they
missed. Norman was in fine form,
recognising this talented author and
illustrator and welcoming her book into the world. Briony spoke beautifully about the sense of loss
she felt after her beloved rabbit died, and everyone was moved by her words. The book and
exhibition were used to inspire activities during the school holiday program and families enjoyed
Briony speak about the writing and illustrating of her book.
Here in the Garden is a gentle exploration of love and loss. Through the cycle of the seasons, in a
beautiful garden, a small boy remembers sharing various activities with a companion, from planting
seeds to tracing clouds drifting across the sky. Every few pages, a simple and heartfelt refrain ‘and
I wish you were here’ is repeated. The lyrical text evokes different times of year and the detailed
watercolour, pencil and gouache illustrations from lots of different perspectives are obviously
created by a keen gardener. The end of the story brings acceptance, and the sense of a life
remembered and acknowledged with love.

Make Your Own Story Book Competition 2014
The Make Your Own Story Book Competition, which is open to all students from years one to eight
in Western Australia, closed on Friday June 6th. The competition is an opportunity for students to
show their narrative writing and illustrative talents through the creation of a picture or story book.
Westbooks in Victoria Park was the collection point for the entries with James Caffey and his staff
kindly assisting the MYOSB Coordinator by receiving and storing the entries.
On Saturday June 7th, eleven CBC committee members met at my home to sort the entries into the
four judging categories, in preparation for the judges’ meeting on Wednesday evening. We enjoyed
viewing the entries and chatting over tea and biscuits! A total of 730 entries were received from a
range of public, private and home school students. Contributing schools spread from Collie across
to Kalgoorlie and north to Broome.
Judging will take place during June and July and winners will be notified in the last week of July
through their school or parent contact. As part of the Book Week celebrations, prizes will be
awarded in a ceremony at The Literature Centre in Fremantle and the prize-winning entries will be
displayed. The winners and their guests will be treated to morning tea and a presentation by a
Western Australian children’s author.
Sincere thanks to all the students, parents, teachers, Westbooks’ staff and CBC committee
members who support the competition with their contributions.

Night Wit
Report : 11th National Conference of the CBCA 2014
by Frané Lessac
Winning a registration to attend the CBCA
National Conference came with an
ambiguous nametag that said, CBCA WA
Winner. The amount of people who
congratulated me for winning this year’s
CBCA Book of the Year Award was amusing.
I didn’t have the heart to mention that I didn’t
have a book in this year’s running, so I just
smiled politely.
To be surrounded by people who are
passionate about children’s books for an
entire weekend was a cherished experience.
Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to personally meet with publishers, editors,
teacher librarians, booksellers, authors and illustrators from all over Australia. I caught up
with many old friends and made some new ones too.
Hard to mention all the inspiring sessions, but some special highlights for me were:
Facilitating Dianne Wolfer’s informative session “A Voice from Afar.” A brilliant
presentation featuring her shortlisted books Light Horse Boy and Granny Grommet and
Me. Dianne was a shining star and was supported by a strong CBCA WA contingency.
Sally Murphy gave a heartfelt talk to launch her moving new book Roses are Blue,
illustrated by WA’s Gabriel Evans and published by Walker Books.
Anthony Hill, author and historian conducted a session: A Century of War, ANZAC and
Children’s Books. There are many beautiful touching war books recently published and I
was humbled when Anthony chose to retell a scene from Simpson and his Donkey.
Another highlight was the Picture Book Partnerships panel – the behind the scenes
collaborations between authors and illustrators. It was a privilege to hear and see the
process behind so many picture books we cherish. Partnerships uncovered were: Libby
Gleeson and Freya Blackwood, Glenda Millard and Stephen Michael King, Julie Vivas and
Margaret Hamilton (on behalf of Margaret Wild).
Finally, the location for the conference dinner at the Australian War Memorial Museum was
absolutely stunning. In an evocative setting, Morris Gleitzman introduced us to his latest
book, Loyal Creatures paired with an emotive performance by actor Tim Petty. I don’t think
there was a dry eye in the museum.
I‘d like to thank everyone at the CBCA WA branch for offering a member an opportunity to
attend a national conference. I’d also like to give my husband, Mark Greenwood, a
humongous thank you for paying my fees on time AND for ticking the box!

Book Discussion Group
In our April the 2014 CBCA Book of the Year Short List discussion was attended by 12 people
each of whom reviewed one or more of the 29 titles. Miraculously we managed to find copies of all
but one of the books in the two weeks since the announcement was made on 8 April.
Comments from the group included:
‘How wonderful that so many WA authors and illustrators are represented on the short list.’
‘Isn’t it great that Dianne Wolfer has two books listed in two categories?’
‘I’d hate to be judging the picture books this year.’
It was a most enjoyable and informative evening and we look forward to hearing what the W.A.
Judge, Anne-Marie Strother, has to say about the short list at her talks in June.
Short List Discussion Attendees: Gail Spiers, Loretta Young, Trish Montgomery, Sally Woffenden, Gay Tierney, Karen Goddard, Marian Hillam, Diane Henderson, Ruth Nitschke, Sue Wyche, Jan Nicholls.
May The sky so heavy by Claire Zorn is a dystopian novel set in the Blue
Mountains and Sydney. Fin and his younger brother, Max, wake up to a nuclear
winter following the detonation of missiles on the other side of the world. With
missing parents, no power and dwindling food supplies they join forces with Lucy
and Arnold from Fin’s school and head for the city. They attempt to seek refuge at
risk of death by crossing the border between inner Sydney where people are
protected and sustained and the outer suburbs where people have been left to fend
for themselves. The sky so heavy is fast-paced with themes of family, friendship,
bullying and survival. Readers are left with some hope at the end and the feeling
that a sequel may be in the offing. Shortlisted in the 2014 Book of the Year: Older
Readers category. Suitable for readers 13+
