IME Phase 2 for Year 1 Curates 5 – 7

East HamA Message from Graham Hamborg

By the time a new cohort of deacons has been ordained at Petertide 2015, I calculate that there will be a hundred and three curates in the Chelmsford Diocese. Some of those are fourth-year curates who will soon move into incumbency or associate ministry, but that will still leave ninety in Years 1-3 of curacy. This is something to celebrate, and for which to give thanks to God.

The programme that follows sets out the IME Phase 2 training days for September 2015 – June 2016. Most are by year group, but we come together for the annual residential weekend in January, and for a day in Chelmsford on ‘Renewal for Mission’ in April 2016. Those in full-time secular employment have six Thursday evening sessions, plus for first-year curates a Saturday on ‘Funerals and Bereavement’. They also participate, of course, in the residential weekend. The great majority of days are for curates only, but there is one Year 2 day (on ‘making Peace with Conflict in the Church’) and one Year 3 day (on ‘Buildings for Mission?’) to which incumbents are also invited.

Please enter all the relevant dates in your diary, and ensure that your incumbent has them in theirs too. The IME Phase 2 is a mandatory element of curacy, and if there are clashes with parish activities then the training day take precedence. Best is if there is no clash anyway, and getting the dates in the diary at once will enable this.

Most days begin with arrivals and coffee at 9.30, with the programme getting under way at 9.50 or 10.00. The latest finish time will be 4.00pm. You can assume this to be so unless it is specified otherwise. Usually you need to bring a sandwich lunch, but drinks are always provided. The Thursday evening sessions for those in secular work start at 6.30pm in Chelmsford Cathedral, where we share a cooked supper with St Mellitus College before our session, which finishes at 8.30pm.

A couple of weeks ahead of each day or evening, I shall e-mail to you to confirm arrangements. In most cases I shall attach a programme for the day. This e-mail will ask you to respond to our CMD Administrator Sue Denham to confirm your attendance, or to give apologies. It is most important that you do respond to this request: we need to know numbers to prime our speakers, for the layout of the room, for numbers of handouts to copy, and sometimes for catering purposes. It is also a basic courtesy and efficiency to do so: failure to RSVP promptly does not reflect well on us.

IME Phase 2 for Year 1 Curates 5 – 7

I find that I am using evaluation sheets only occasionally, sensing groans when people are asked to fill them out. But I always welcome feedback in person or by e-mail, whether to thank and encourage, or to suggest how the day might be improved for those who come after you.

I am looking forward to sharing these days with you over the coming months, and to the encouragement and equipping that I believe they will provide.

Every Blessing,

Annual Residential Weekend for Curates in Years 1, 2 & 3

Adventurous Lovers: Nurturing an Entrepreneurial CultureDate 8-10th January 2016Place High Leigh Conference Centre, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire.

The Bishop of Colchester, Roger Morris, will be leading us through this weekend, opening up the question of how we can foster and develop an entrepreneurial spirit in the mission and ministry of the Church. Building and innovating come less naturally to some of us than do pastoring and preaching, but even if we ourselves are not natural risk-taking entrepreneurs, we need to allow others to be so, and to set them free to be an essential part of building the Kingdom.

Bishop Roger will share some theological insights with us, and some biblical examples of people who God has used (e.g. Jacob as God’s Used Car Salesman….). He will also bring in some entrepreneurs from outside church life to see what we can learn from them.

The Saturday evening will give us space to watch a relevant film, before Bishop brings things together on the Sunday morning, which will culminate in the celebration of the Eucharist.

As always there will be opportunities to pray, worship, relax and socialise together.

The weekend will begin with arrivals from 5.00pm on Friday and will end with lunch on Sunday. It is recommended that you take the rest of Sunday off, and do not take part in an evening service back in the parish.

A Day for All Curates: Renewal for MissionDate Tuesday 19th April 2016Place St Cedd’s Hall, Chapter House, Chelmsford.

We shall be led by Martin Cavender and Alison Morgan of ReSource. This will be a day to re-charge our spiritual batteries as we continue in the work of mission and ministry.

Martin Cavender Alison Morgan

ReSource works for the renewal of people and churches for mission in the power of the Holy Spirit – across all traditions, Churches and denominations, but with an Anglican distinctive.

Church Schools PlacementsAs described in the 2014 & 2015 editions of the Handbook for Curates and Training Incumbents, it is now a regular feature of curacy for Year 2 stipendiary curates to undertake a week’s block placement in a Church School.

Dates will be negotiated between the curate and the headteacher of the school with which the curate is linked, but all will be in the term between Christmas and Easter 2016. There is a preparatory seminar ahead on the afternoon of Wednesday 25th November 2015, and a follow-up reflection seminar on Tuesday 15th March 2016.

While this is normative for all stipendiary curates, any self-supporting curates who wish to undertake such a placement may do so. Please be in touch with Graham Hamborg to ask to be included. Equally, there may be one or two stipendiary curates whose previous experience would make this of limited value: this should be discussed with your Area CMD Adviser.

IME Phase 2 for Year 1 Curates

Funerals and BereavementLeaders Revd David Tudor and Mrs Pat ScottDate Thursday 17th September or Saturday 14th November 2015Place St Cedd’s Hall, Chapter House, Chelmsford (17th September)

The Library, Diocesan Office (14th November)

Some full-time parish curates will, by the time these days take place, already have conducted several funerals; and some

5

curates who have previously been readers will have longer experience still. Others will not yet have taken one. Whether we are refreshing our skills and reflecting on our practice, or preparing for what will be a new ministry, this day gives opportunity to consider the purpose of funerals, the context in which we minister, and our own beliefs and feelings in respect of death, funerals and bereavement.

David Tudor is Team Rector of Canvey Island and Area Dean of Hadleigh.Pat Otter is Reader at St Mary’s, Bocking.

Some Licensed Lay Ministers/Readers may join in these days.

There is some preparatory work to be done for this training, details of which will be sent to you in July.

Safeguarding; Bishop of ChelmsfordLeaders Danielle Law and Amanda Goh of the diocesan Safeguarding Team

& Bishop StephenDate Monday 28th September 2015Place St Cedd’s Hall, Chapter House, Chelmsford

The morning will be a session on issues of Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults. Prior to this participants will have been given the web-address with which to complete the basic-level Safeguarding training that several thousand church members in the diocese will also have undertaken: this session will be higher-level provision for clergy.

After a lunch break we shall then have a 90-minute session with Bishop Stephen: he looks forward to using this time to share and discuss his hopes and strategic priorities for the diocese.

IME Phase 2 for Year 1 Curates (continued)

Ministry in SchoolsLeaders Revd Canon Tim Elbourne, Ruth Everett and

colleagues from the diocesan Education TeamDate Tuesday 10th November 2015Place St Cedd’s Hall, Chapter House, Chelmsford

6

Parish-School links can and should be a vital part of the Church’s mission and ministry. So we need to understand how schools work, what different kinds of school there are, how we can build links, and what kinds of opportunities may be open to us as clergy.

Taking school assemblies will be something that some of us enjoy and do well, but which others find daunting, demanding and stretching.

This day will recognise that participants come with varying degrees of experience of school life, from some who have been teachers and governors to others who have had little, if any contact with a school, and it will aim to have something for everyone. If you have worked in a school, please let us know ahead of the day.

Tim Elbourne is the diocese’s Director of Education. Ruth Everett is one of three diocesan Schools Advisers.

Ministerial Identity: Inhabiting the Role, Adapting to Public MinistryLeaders Graham Hamborg and Geoff ReadDate Thursday 28th January 2016Place The Retreat House, Pleshey

Seven months in, what is ordained life doing to our sense of who we are? And to our prayer lives? Can we be professional in our conduct and also be ourselves? How are we finding it being clearly in the public eye? And what professional guidelines do we particularly need to be aware of?

This day will be a mixture of input and conversation, with some space to reflect on where our ministry is up to.

IME Phase 2 for Year 1 Curates (continued)

EIG Financial SeminarLeader Mr Richard Wood, Ecclesiastical Insurance GroupDate Thursday 25th February 2016 (9.45-1.00; sandwiches provided at

1.00pm) Place The Boardroom, Diocesan Office

Please note that this session will be of primarily for those in stipendiary ministry. Self-supporting ministers are welcome to come, but need not.

Preparing to Preside at Holy CommunionLeaders Graham Hamborg and invited speakersDate Thursday 26th May 2016 Place The Retreat House, Pleshey

This is not a “how to do it” day – we assume that training incumbents provide instruction on this – but a reflective day on which three speakers of different traditions share their thoughts, and invite conversation, on questions such as:

What it means to them, and what they feel, when they preside at Holy Communion;

Their theological view on what is happening in the Eucharist, and all that goes with it;

How their personal perceptions have changed over time (if they have);

How they think the Eucharist is viewed by their congregation(s); The Eucharist as a context for pastoral care, healing and mission; The place of children at Holy Communion; What ‘ceremonial’ ingredients they do or don’t include, and why

they do or don’t include them (e.g. hand-washing, elevation).

IME Phase 2 for Year 2 Curates

Understandings of Mission Leader Graham Hamborg and invited speakersDate Tuesday 15th September 2015Place St Peter’s, South Weald (near Brentwood)

It is readily agreed that ‘Mission’ must have a high priority in the church’s life. But what do we understand ‘Mission’ to be? On this day three speakers from varied church traditions and sociological contexts will share their views with us.

The speakers will be asked to address questions such as:o What are your own personal priorities in mission?o What balance do you hold between Christian presence in the

community and building up the Christian community?o When you speak of ‘Growing the Church’, what are your

priorities among growth in numbers, growth in spiritual depth and reality, growth in community, growth in effectiveness of discipleship, or any other kinds of growth?

o What part do Evangelism, Pastoral Care, and Social Concern play in your understanding of Mission?

o What part does Sunday worship play in forwarding your priorities?

o How does your engagement with people through the occasional offices relate to your priorities? What are your practices and policies relating to them? (e.g. open baptism policy, or requirement to attend a course and/or church; marriage after divorce)

o How do you see your ministry contributing to the priorities of ‘Transforming Presence’?

o How do you help lay people develop as disciples?o How do you help lay people to articulate their faith?o What else is important for you in your participation in the

Missio Dei?o How much does your congregation (or congregations) share

your understanding of mission?

Personal Safety in MinistryLeaders Mr Paul WhiteDate Wednesday 25th November 2015, morning only 9.30-1.00Place The Church of the Holy Spirit, Widford (near Chelmsford)

As ordained ministers we wish to be available to others. But we also need to be aware of the risks to us in the course of our ministry, and how we may take sensible and practical steps to minimise such risks.

Paul White works for the Metropolitan Police as head of the Counter Terrorism Security Unit that advises businesses and individuals on protective security strategies and measures, a role which he will soon be heading up nationally. He is also a regular member of his Anglican church, just outside our diocese.

Church Schools Placement Seminar – also 25th November 2015Curates who will be undertaking a church schools placement can then come straight on down to the Library in the Diocesan Office, where sandwiches will be provided ahead of the Church Schools Placement Preparation Seminar 2.00-3.30pm.

The Church as a Healing Community – Issues of Mental HealthLeader Revd Nigel Copsey and colleaguesDate Wednesday 24th February 2016Place Christ Church, Warley

Clergy are not mental health professionals, but we nevertheless find ourselves alongside those struggling with mental health issues. This day

10

will aim to increase our understanding and awareness, and to help us know how we and our churches can support people.

Nigel is Team Leader for Spiritual Care at the East London Foundation Trust, which provides mental health services to East London; prior to this he was priest-in-charge at the Ascension, Victoria Dock.

Church Schools Placement Post-Placement Reflection Seminar will be held on Tuesday 15th March 2.00-3.30 in the Library, Diocesan Office, A sandwich lunch will be provided at 1.00pm.

IME Phase 2 for Year 2 Curates (continued)

Caring for Life, Preparing for DeathLeaders Revds Gill Moore and Lucyann Ashdown Date Thursday 12th May 2016Place St Helena Hospice, Colchester

Gill Moore is chaplain of St Helena Hospice, Colchester, Lucyann Ashdown is chaplain of Farleigh Hospice, Broomfield.

This day will invite us to look at our own attitudes to and feelings about death. A consultant specialist in palliative care will outline the history of the hospice movement, and lead us into discussion of current issues in palliative care, such as the growing pressure from some to legislate for assisted suicide. We shall understand the role of a chaplain in such a setting, and engage with true-life scenarios.

Making Peace with Conflict in the Church: June 2016The work of Bridge Builders, is highly regarded, and several clergy of the diocese have benefited from their full residential week’s course. Some from within the Diocese of Chelmsford have been trained as Bridge Builders trainers, and they will lead this day.

The day will be introductory, and will take us into exploration of our experiences of conflict in the church, and into consideration of constructive and destructive patterns of behaviour. It will help us understand ourselves better, in terms of how we behave in conflict

11

situations, and will introduce us to some ways in which conflicts may be resolved.

This day is for Year 2 curates and their incumbents together. If your incumbent cannot come, we ask if someone else in leadership in the church can join you. Because of numbers in this year-group, there will be three separate days offered:

Thursday 16th June 2016 in St Cedd’s Hall, Chapter House, Chelmsford

Wednesday 22nd June at St John’s, Colchester Tuesday 28th June at All Saints, Woodford Wells

The first two will be led by Revds Graham Hamborg, Mandy Elmes, and Paul Wilkin. The third day will be led by Revds Jill Mowbray, Susan Iskander and Graham Hamborg.

Please see the separate paper about these days.

Giving, Stewardship and Finance in Christian DiscipleshipLeaders Revd Canon Martin Wood and Mr Robin StevensDate Tuesday 13th October 2015Place St Cedd’s Hall, Chapter House, Chelmsford

The perception of some people is that ‘the Church is always after your money’, and perhaps that’s why some clergy find it difficult to talk about money or teach about giving. Anyway, how do we approach the whole topic? Is it simply a question of needing to pay our bills and give a bit away? Or is giving a discipleship issue? How can PCCs and diocesan synods be good stewards? What resources does the Church of England and the Diocese of Chelmsford have to offer to help us?

Martin Wood is Mission & Ministry Adviser for the Bradwell Episcopal Area. Robin Stevens is a Reader at All Saints, Springfield, and has been the Church of England’s national Stewardship Adviser, and Stewardship Adviser to the Barking Episcopal Area.

12

Community Development, Community EngagementLeader Revd Richard JordanDate Thursday 12th November 2015Place Christ Church, Warley

The Church frequently talks about the need to be involved in our communities. Sometimes this will lead us into opportunities for partnerships with statutory or voluntary agencies, or with local authorities. What are the opportunities and pitfalls of such partnerships? What do we need to know and be aware of? Before that, what theology of community engagement do we hold? What models of community working are available to us? What do we mean by terms such as ‘Community Work’, ‘Community Development’, ‘Community Action’? What resources are there to support us?

Richard Jordan is the Faith in Action Adviser of the Bradwell Episcopal Area.

IME Phase 2 for Year 3 Curates (continued)

The Ministry of Deliverance from evil: Bringing Wholeness to People and PlacesLeaders Revd Canon Trevor Walt and members of the diocesan

Healing and Deliverance groupDate Thursday 4th February 2016Place St Cedd’s Hall, Chapter House, Chelmsford

“Help vicar, I think my house is haunted”. “Help vicar, I think I’m possessed”. Such approaches are, thankfully, not a daily occurrence, but when they do come, we need to know how to respond. What does the Bible say about evil spirits and demon possession, and how do we relate a

13

biblical world-view to a scientific, Enlightenment understanding? What policies and guidelines does the Church have to assist us? Where can we turn for help and advice?

Trevor Walt chairs the diocesan Deliverance Group.

Moving OnLeaders Jill Mowbray & Graham Hamborg; Archdeacon of BarkingDates 1-2nd March 2016Place The Retreat House, PlesheyThe conference will run from mid-morning on Tuesday until Wednesday afternoon.Self-supporting curates intending to move into an associate ministry post need notstay for the second day, but are asked to stay for the evening session on the first.

At this point in the curacy it is time to think about “What next after the curacy?” For stipendiary curates, it is likely to be a move to an incumbency-level post. For self-supporting curates it may be a change to an Associate Ministry post in a different parish or within the same parish. What are the options? What do curates need to do to find the right move? How will things change for self-supporting curates?

This event will explain the appointments processes of the Church of England. It will allow participants to reflect on their curacy so far, and on what they sense their next step may be. There will be opportunity to ‘decode’ advertisements in the Church Times, and interpret parish profiles. Attention will be paid to writing applications and to the interview day.

There is some preparatory work to be done for this event.

The Area Bishops will meet with each stipendiary curate in or around March, and SSM curates later on, and ask that curates wait to take part in this conference and have that meeting with their bishop before applying for posts. IME Phase 2 for Year 3 Curates (continued)

Buildings for Mission? – a day for Year 3 curates and their incumbents

14

Leaders The Ven Annette Cooper, Mr Paul Whitnall, Mr John BallDate Monday 16th May 2016Place St Mary’s Great Baddow

Are our church buildings a blessing, a symbol of the presence of Christian faith in our communities? Or are they a drain on our resources of time and money? Or perhaps both?

Can we adapt our buildings for mission in the 21st century? What legal frameworks do we need to be aware of as we do so?

Annette is Archdeacon of Colchester. Paul is ‘Buildings for Mission’ Adviser for the Barking Episcopal Area. John is Chief Executive of the Diocese of Chelmsford & Diocesan Secretary.

IME Phase 2 for Year 4 Curates

Moving into a Leadership RoleLeaders Graham Hamborg and Geoff ReadDate 29-30th September 2015Place Gilwell Park Conference Centre, ChingfordThis day will run from mid-morning on the first day through to 4.00pm on the second day.

It will have a primary focus on incumbency, but will also be of value to those who will in due course move from curacy into associate ministry. Those already appointed to an incumbency, or who may even have moved, are still invited to this event.

The day will explore questions such as How is life different if the buck stops with you? How do we work with colleagues when some are full-time parish and

some not, some are ordained and some lay? What are the implications for us of MMUs?

What are the challenges of ministry in a multi-parish benefice? How do you maintain your sanity, and a balanced life? What spiritual discipline or rule of life will sustain you? Where do you get the help and support you need?

15

16

The Ministry of WelcomeLeader Revd Charlie Kosla, diocesan Mission & Evangelism AdviserDate Thursday 24th September 2015

What do our church buildings, churchyards and noticeboards look like to the uninitiated? What might an outsider experience if they came through the door of your church? How can local churches be more welcoming than they often are? Charlie has done steady work across the diocese in raising these and other related questions – come and gain from his expertise.

The Church and EducationLeader Revd Canon Tim Elbourne Date Thursday 26th November 2015

The church was in the business of Education before the state got involved too. Today education remains a partnership between church and state. Some people’s full-time secular work will be in education, and their

17

contribution to this evening will be welcomed. Others will find it informative to understand the nature of church-school relationships, and how they can be a blessing to both.
