CONDITIONEXTREMELY FINE - OUTSTANDING, THE HIGHEST QUALITY POSSIBLE.VERY FINE - CHOICE CONDITION, WELL CENTERED; IF IMPERFORATE

WITH FOUR WELL CLEAR MARGINS.FINE - SOUND IN ALL RESPECTS, PERFORATIONS CLEAR DESIGN; IF IMPERFORATE

MARGINS MAY BE CLOSE OR TOUCHING, BUT WILL NOT CUT DESIGN.VERY GOOD - STAMPS ARE SO GRADED EITHER BY REASON OF GENERAL APPEARANCE OF

IMPERFECT CENTERING OR A FAULT.At all times any faults such as a crease, tear, thin spot, etc. will be specifically described. In collection lots and balances the conditiondescribed is meant to indicate the overall average to be found. Examples above and below the condition listed can be expected.Typically we do not describe minor perforation separations on blocks or sheets as these are quite normal and are not grounds for theirreturn. In regard to covers, torn or partially missing black flaps, light filing folds and small edge tears, unless they affect the adhesiveor markings, are not justification for the return of a lot.

CATALOGS USEDThe catalog numbers and catalog values of the contents of the lots, given in the descriptions, are from the Scott Standard PostageStamp Catalogue, Volumes 1-6, 2015 editions, and the 2015 Scott Specialized Catalogue of U.S. Stamps and Covers. Where, byreason of the Scott Catalog not listing items in a lot, another catalog is used, and it will be named in the description of the lot.

ESTIMATESIf an Estimated cash value is given, it is shown in the descriptions with the abbreviation “Est.” Estimates, which are in United Statesdollars, are used when a lot is large or when it is not listed in the standard catalogs. Our estimates are typically conservative and thelots invariably realize in the estimate ranges or higher.

1890-1893 SMALL BANK NOTE ISSUES

A total of 56 imperforate gummed sets of the 1c-90c 1890 Small Bank Notes, mostly in pairs and blocks, were released inexchange for rare United States stamps needed for the collection at the National Museum at Washington, D.C. Among thestamps received by this exchange were 15c, 24c and 30c 1869 issue with inverted centers, 1c and 2c Pan-Americans withinverted centers and other varieties missing from the nations collection. In addition to the above imperforate gummed examplesexist of the 2c denomination five different shades, the 4c in eleven shades and the 5c in thirteen shades and these should not beconfused with the 56 sets of imperforates. 1901 FOUR CENT PAN-AMERICAN, CENTER INVERTED

A Well Centered Unused Example of this Rarity

110 (H) #296a, 4c Pan-American, Center Inverted, an especially well centered unused example, with rich colors and detailed impression, marvelously well centered for this error rarity, with the perforations clearing the design all around, an uncommon occurrence, tinythinned spots, very fine appearance; a handsome and desirable example of this popularerror of which fewer than 100 exist; 1974 PF certificate.

There were two sheets of 100 each of the Four Cent Pan-American with centers invertedintentionally made for Post Office records. An unknown number of these were overprinted“Specimen” and still others were destroyed. The non-“Specimen” examples were mounted in aPost Office Department book resulting in the vast majority of them having disturbed gum,and a number were also thinned in an effort to remove them from mounting paper. Very fewexist today with completely undisturbed original gum and/or free of faults. (photo) 85,000.00

1851 TWELVE PENCE BLACK ON LAID PAPER

A Sound Original Gum Example of this Rarity

144 H #3, 1851 12c Black on laid paper, a beautiful mint example of this legendary classicrarity, brilliantly fresh and crisp overall, with intense color and a highly detailedimpression, four large and well balanced margins, disturbed original gum, very fine andchoice.

The Twelve Pence Black of Canada has an interesting history which accounts for its iconicstatus. The original die was engraved by Alfred Jones and the stamps were printed by Rawdon,Wright, Hatch & Edison - the printers of the 1847 first issues of the United States.

A total of 51,000 stamps (255 sheets each of 200 subjects), along with a proof imprint sheet, were shipped to Canadian postal authorities on May 14, 1851. However, the stamp proved tobe quite unpopular with the public due to its limited usage for specific postal rates to distantdestinations. Hence it saw limited distribution, with shipments being sent to only eighteen PostOffices. Only a mere 1,450 stamps were ever sold in over three and a half years of use. Allremaining stamps were destroyed on May 1, 1857.

A pleasing quality original gum example of one of the world’s rarest stamps. Mintexamples, especially sound and with original gum, are far more rare than used copies.Accompanied by 1977 BPA and 1980 and 2015 PF certificates (Unitrade C$300,000.00).Ex-General Robert Gill (Robson Lowe, October, 1965) and The Consort Collection (StanleyGibbons, November 1977).
