A character is a made-up person in a story.
![Page 4: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
As an author, you get to make up this person.
![Page 5: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
This fictional person may be based on some aspect of yourself or of
someone you know.
![Page 6: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
This character will have a designated role in your story, which you must
direct and develop.
![Page 7: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
This PowerPoint intends to help you answer three questions about a
character in development:• What role should this character
play?• Will this character be round or
flat?• Will this character be static or
dynamic?
![Page 8: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Let’s begin with character roles.
![Page 9: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Like a casting director, you need to know which actor can play which
role.
![Page 10: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Here is your cast:• The Protagonist• The Antagonist• The Foil• The Stock Character
![Page 11: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
In your story, you will need to fill each role at least once.
![Page 12: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The Protagonist
The Protagonist is the lead character—the focus of audience identification. We expect that the character will change in some way, becoming a better (or worse) version of him or her self.
![Page 13: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
In the eponymous films, Shrek becomes a better, more fulfilled version of himself. He earns Fiona’s love.
![Page 14: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Fiona also changes. At first obsessed with protocols and
externals, she gives up expectations
for love of the least-likely
candidate in animation history.
![Page 15: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
She accepts her true nature as an ogress and finds personal and marital fulfillment as
a result.
![Page 16: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
The happiness Shrek and Fiona find together is a promise to all of us.
![Page 17: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Not all protagonists change for the better, however.
![Page 18: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Some change for the worse-- a whole lot worse.
![Page 19: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Michael Corleone, the protagonist of The
Godfather books and films, changes. For his
father’s safety, he sacrifices his ideals
and integrity to become the thing he most despises: a mob
boss.
![Page 20: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Like all sacrifices, his cannot be unmade. He alienates his wife, has
his own brother murdered, and is shunned by his
children. Our last image is of a man who has everything—and no
one.
![Page 21: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
In the last scene of The Godfather, Part II, we see him as utterly,
eternally alone.
![Page 22: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
The price he pays for victory is a warning to all of us.
![Page 23: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Change in a Protagonist is not possible without conflict.
![Page 24: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
There is no greater source of conflict that a bona-fide
Antagonist.
![Page 25: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
An Antagonist is the character in conflict or competition with the
Protagonist.
![Page 26: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Lord Farquaad competes with Shrek for control of
the swamp and for Fiona’s hand in marriage.
![Page 27: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Prince Charming competes with
Shrek for control of Far, Far Away and for Fiona.
![Page 28: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Conflict in the Shrek series results from their conviction that their wealth and conventional appearances make them
better for Fiona than Shrek.
![Page 29: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
The audience is aware, however, that neither character would make a great
monarch, and that neither loves Fiona. Each would seek to conventionalize her against
her will.
![Page 30: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
We watch to see if trickery and deceit win out over true love.
![Page 31: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
In the Shrek films, they do not win.
![Page 32: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Nor do they win in Snow White and the Huntsman.
![Page 33: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Queen Ravenna, the antagonist of Snow White and the Huntsman, deceives and betrays
virtually everyone, even her brother, but ends up defeated by the protagonist, Snow White.
![Page 34: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Keep in mind that antagonists are not always human—or even alive.
![Page 35: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
In Finding Nemo, the antagonists are the
Pacific Ocean, which separates Marlin from
Nemo, and the fish tank which keeps Nemo prisoner.
![Page 36: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Protagonists and antagonists are primary characters.
![Page 37: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
For realistic fiction, there must also be the secondary characters.
![Page 38: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
A Foil is a character whose purpose is to point up a specific quality in a
Protagonist by contrast.
![Page 39: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Donkey is Shrek’s best friend.
He is also an excellent foil. His cowardice and indecision highlight Shrek’s bravery and confidence by contrast.
![Page 40: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
In return, his openness and friendliness highlight Shrek’s stubbornness and poor
social skills by contrast.
![Page 41: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
A fictional world must be inhabited by more than just the main cast of
protagonists, antagonists, and foils.
![Page 42: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
Often, authors rely on a culturally-provided warehouse stuffed to the
rafters with Stock Characters.
![Page 43: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
A stock character is an instantly-recognizable type.
![Page 44: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
These characters are so familiar that an author doesn’t always
develop them.
![Page 45: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
Consider the ubiquity of the “TV mom.” Think Modern Family or The Neighbors. Or the “hooker with a
heart of gold.” Think Pretty Woman—and even House, M.D.
![Page 46: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
Consider one stock character in particular:
![Page 47: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
The soldier more
committed to a cause than to
society’s ideals: Avatar’s Col.
Miles Quaritch is an example.
![Page 48: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
So is Col. Nathan
Jessup from A Few Good
Men
![Page 49: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
You can see the type in Gen. W.R. Monger from Monsters vs. Aliens
![Page 50: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
The Mean-Girl Cheerleader is also
frequently deployed.
• Santana Lopez of Glee
• Cordelia Chase of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
• Libby Chessler of Sabrina, the Teen-Age Witch
![Page 51: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
Some authors go beyond “stock” into stereotype.
![Page 52: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)
What more needs to be
said?
![Page 53: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/53.jpg)
We are not those authors.
![Page 54: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/54.jpg)
We are authors who determine dimension—
whether a character will be flat or round.
![Page 55: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
A round character offers the three-dimensional illusion that he or she has a past, a present, and a future.
![Page 56: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
Round characters are sometimes more vivid than people we actually
know.
![Page 57: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
Consider Meryl Streep, whose characters are so three-dimensional and so suffused with an
inner life that she has been nominated 27 times for Academy awards.
![Page 58: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/58.jpg)
Think of the control-freak boss-
from-hell, Miranda Priestly
![Page 59: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/59.jpg)
Or Donna, the free-
spirit hippie mom
![Page 60: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/60.jpg)
Or even ‘Margaret Thatcher,’ Prime
Minister of England
![Page 61: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/61.jpg)
Each character’s unique inner life shines through Streep’s portrait.
![Page 62: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)
Miranda Priestly, Donna, and ‘Margaret Thatcher’ are round
characters.
![Page 63: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/63.jpg)
But characters can also be flat.
![Page 64: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/64.jpg)
Flat characters remain two-dimensional. We know nothing about
where they came from or where they’re going, or what they most
desire.
![Page 65: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/65.jpg)
The blue whale in Finding Nemo is a flat character.
![Page 66: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/66.jpg)
We know nothing about where the whale comes from or why he
wants to help. He’s a baleen limo.
![Page 67: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/67.jpg)
By contrast, we know a lot more about Dragon’s inner life: she’s disappointed about her failure in the castle, she loves Donkey, and she sincerely
wants to help Shrek save Fiona.
![Page 68: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/68.jpg)
The bartender in the Ritz Bar in
“Babylon Revisited” is a flat character.
![Page 69: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/69.jpg)
The whale and the bartender—and the waitress in “Hills Like White Elephants”— perform necessary functions to advance
the plot.
![Page 70: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/70.jpg)
But they don’t even get names.
![Page 71: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/71.jpg)
All characters have a purpose. Let us now consider what some characters
do.
![Page 72: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/72.jpg)
The Prime Directive for all protagonists is this:
![Page 73: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/73.jpg)
Change or die.
![Page 74: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/74.jpg)
This is not negotiable.
![Page 75: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/75.jpg)
Even reality shows like Jersey Shore feature highly-contrived but
recognizable arcs.
![Page 76: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/76.jpg)
The story arc is the vehicle of change: the character moves from a state of grace to a state of damnation, and
sometimes back to a state of grace.
![Page 77: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/77.jpg)
Remember him?
![Page 78: The Character Lecture Roles, Dimensions, and Purpose.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649cc15503460f94987eee/html5/thumbnails/78.jpg)
