The depths of our cold winter are here, but some events have been hot. I com-bined the December and January newslet-ters, as there was little to report then. That’s not as true this month.

Now we’ve had hotrods at the CowPalace and cars racing too hot down thehill at Laguna. We also had car shows inSan Francisco and San Jose, but no inter-esting news from them.

The Roadster Show is always great tosee, with cars and bikes built just to beworks of art. I love it just for the crafts-manship of the paint and body work, andcan only imagine how many hours havebeen invested in them.

There was more excitement at the firsttrack day of the year, at Laguna. An Elise,on the first lap, lost control comingthrough turn nine and into ten. It only gotuglier from there, with full inpact into awall that’s quite a distance from the line.

Autocrosses, trackdays, car shows andracing are near, as Spring trys to decide ifit’s here or not. The birds think so.They’ve started building nests and bomb-ing my cars already!

Joel Farber and DanWardman are the folks behindthe Evil Twins Racing Team.Long time members of theGGLC, they’ve been vintageracing for years and haveseveral cars in their stable. One of which is the Series 1Lotus Europa they brought tothe January 2, 2007 GGLCtrackday at Mazda LagunaSeca Raceway.

This is a far-from-stockSeries 1 Europa. The bodyand frame are new, con-structed byBanks Europa in England tothe team’s specifications.Everything about it is beauti-fully constructed and cleanenough to eat off.

As an example of theattention to detail, there are noexternal door handles (suchwould cause aerodynamicdrag). Instead a small openingin the plastic non-openabledoor windows gives access toa door latch on top of the arm-rest.

The gloss-black roll cageis beautifully integrated andso closely fitted it’s impos-sible to see clearly. The rear ofthe cage connects to the rearsuspension pickups and so isat least easily visible there!

Dan Wardman advising Joel Farber: “Remember, keep the arrow pointedin the direction of the traffic flow.”

A clean engine bay, just needs a V8 stuffed in there! But CSRG, the majorvintage race group in northern California, frowns on such improvements.

Track day organizers JohnZender and Scott Hogben startedoffthe 2007 GGLC trackday seasonJanuary 2 at Mazda Laguna SecaRaceway, Monterey California.

The day was bright and cool, perfect trackday weather (itcould have been raining...).

Because the course has wallsall around no novices wereallowed. Only experienceddrivers. The event was fullysubscribed with 75 drivers, organized into 3 groups of 25cars (the max the track allows atonce). By allowing folks to runonly ‘in group’ we knew we werehonoring the track maximumwithout counting cars!

Each group had a 20 minutesession and the groups rotatedthroughout the day (there was a20 minute track closure atlunch time). With the PA systemworking and a publishedschedule that we kept to thismeant it was easy for everyoneto know whose session was on-track. It all progressed verysmoothly.

The day began with a de-tailed review of the rules for theday, a review of the flags and arepeated plea to go slowin the first session. RegrettablySunny Chu failed to goslow and destroyed an Elise inthe first session, hitting theoutside wall before turn 11.There were no further incidents, though John Zender over-ad-justed his brakes on “the Flamer”

Europa once so they would notrelease, and your scribe had thescrews holding the left reartaillight of his Europa unscrewthemselves so the assembly wasjust hanging by its wires.

Lotus was well represented, with 5 Europas, 3 Esprits, 1Elan, more than 12 Elise and atleast 1 Exige.

Perhaps the most unusual carwas a Mini (old style) with aHonda car engine where the rear

seat would usually be!I personally did 107 miles on

track in my blue Europa. Each car had the opportunity tobe on track for about 140 min-utes(seven sessions of 20 minuteseach). So there was plenty oftrack time.

Watch the www.gglotus.orgwebsite for future track days!

Another Lotus-based Electric Car Business Week Article

Lotus Goes ElectricZAP works with Lotus to

create a new electric crossoverwith 155 mph, 644 bhp, all-wheel drive, a 10 minute re-charge and a 350 mile range

In a marriage seemingly wellmatched, electric automobilepioneer ZAP has chosen LotusEngineering's platform and bodystructure design as the basis forthe development of the highperformance electric ZAP-X.The car is based on the advancedAPX (Aluminium PerformanceCrossover) concept car and willbe shown for the first time at theNorth American Dealers Asso-ciation (NADA) exhibitionwhich opens February 3rd. Acombination of the lightweightaluminium vehicle architecture, anew efficient drive and advancedbattery management systems isintended to enable a range of upto 350 miles between charges, with a rapid 10-minute recharg-ing time. An auxiliary power unitis planned to support longerdistance journeys. The goodnews for sports enthusiasts is theperformance courtesy of a killerpower-to-weight ratio. - four in-hub electric motors, deliver 161bhp apiece, which add togetherfor 644 horsepower in all wheeldrive mode, and capable ofpowering the ZAP-X to a topspeed of 155mph.

Steve Schneider, CEO ofZAP, said: "Lotus Engineering'sAPX technology demonstratorvehicle is a perfect fit for ourplans to introduce a full productportfolio of electric cars. Due to

the initial design by Lotus, ourcost and time to production willbe significantly reduced. Webelieve that the ZAP-X willbecome the most advanced, mostpractical and most appealingflagship electric vehicle to dateand will revolutionize the indus-try providing the driver with theenjoyment of a sports car and thepracticality of an SUV."

Mike Kimberley, CEO ofGroup Lotus plc, said: "LotusEngineering's APX is a world-class innovative concept and wasdeveloped to showcase realsolutions to new challengesfacing the automotive industry. So it's very satisfying that ZAP'sproposed new model will makeuse of a great deal of the APXconcept's advanced body struc-ture and chassis technology. Thebringing together of these next-generation vehicle technologiesrepresents another significantstep forward for automotivetechnology."

The APX showcases LotusEngineering's Versatile VehicleArchitecture technology, com-bining lightweight aluminiumvehicle architecture with excep-tionally strong and stiff structuralrigidity, as well as lower manu-facturing investment require-ments. Having first been shownto the world at the Geneva motorshow in 2006, the APX concepthas won the 2006 EuropeanAluminium Awards in the"Transport and Automotive"category.

The innovative placement ofthe power train leaves the space

previously occupied by theconventional engine and drivetrain for additional batterycapacity and amenities, making ita very consumer-oriented electriccar concept. These design fea-tures will give the ZAP-Xcrossover the structural strength, and potentially storage and rangethat no electric vehicle has yetachieved publicly.

The development programmeis proposed to be managed froma new centre of excellence forresearch and development ofenvironmentally-friendly vehicledesigns and technologies.

Engineering input will comefrom Lotus Engineering Inc, andthe British technologyconsultancy's other R&D centresin the UK, Malaysia and China.

There can never be too manyskulls at the Roadster Show.
