1 October 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer’s By: Amelia Glenchur, Community Life Services Coordinator Practically everyone knows someone with Alzheimer’s Disease. One in every 10 people over the age of 65 has it...and 65 is young! CVM residents, staff, volunteers, family, and friends came to- gether to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, September 15th at Voice of America Park. Thanks to all your contributions we raised over $1,000! Thank you to all who walked and contributed to this great cause! We are looking forward to an even bigger turnout from our Village in 2019. What a Bash! By: Julia Larimer, Director of Community Life Services Due to rains coming up north from tropical storms, we had to move our 2nd Annual Grandparents’ Day Bash indoors, but still had a fantastic time! Over 225 residents and their families came out to celebrate grandparents. Guests enjoyed performances by The Gentlemen of Swing and Full Moon Ranch in the Chapel, and The Roaring 20’s Quartet performed throughout the main halls. Families posed for pictures in front of the fire- place (Reminder: use #CVMgdp2018 on Facebook and Instagram!). Generations came together for caricatures, games, balloon animals (and aliens, and footballs, and head- pieces, and rings) and of course, food. In spite of the weather, the food trucks still came and put on a great meal for our guests underneath the carport! We hope you had a wonderful time with friends and family at this event. We love bringing people together and helping make memories and traditions. And now we know that we can absolutely do this indoors or outdoors, so be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s bash — Saturday, September 14th (always on the second Saturday in September). PS — We have lots of pictures from the Bash by professional photographer Steve Ziegelmeyer, but we need consent to share them! Please consider signing a consent form which you can get from Julia Larimer.

What a Bash! By: Julia Larimer, Director of Community Life Services

Due to rains coming up north from tropical storms, we had to move our 2nd Annual Grandparents’ Day Bash indoors, but still had a fantastic time! Over 225 residents and their families came out to celebrate grandparents.

Chapel Services The good Lord willing, October will begin a new sermon series to our Sunday worship services as we sin-gle out and study “The Promises of God.” Services are at 10am and 7pm. A different promise from the Lord will be studied each week. This will be an encouraging series for everyone who attends. Come be in-spired by God’s Word, sing some of your favorite hymns, and join dozens of others in powerful worship.

Wednesday Bible Study What about the book of Revelation? Our Wednesday Bible Study will begin a study of this marvelous New Testament book beginning October 3 at 10am in the chapel.

Revelation tells us a lot about a Christian’s future home in Heaven, about the defeat of Satan, and the reign of Christ forever. Join us the first and third Wednesdays of the month for this informative and chal-lenging study.

Women’s Fall Bible Study Our Women’s Bible Study continues a study of 1 Samuel throughout the month of October. Studies are held at 10am in the chapel. All women in the Village and community are welcome.

Prayer Requests Please remember that you are always welcome to stop by my office and share your prayer needs (or just write them out and leave on my desk or in the hand-rail trough just outside my door). I am glad to pray for you and your loved ones.

Encouragement Group Our Encouragement Group meets every Tuesday afternoon at 2pm in the Chaplain’s Lounge.

Retired Ministers’ Fellowship Retired Ministers’ Fellowship will meet on Tuesday, October 17, at 10am in the Chaplain’s Lounge. These meetings provide a great opportunity for ministers to share, reminisce and be encouraged by a common faith and calling.

Social Services Scoop

By: Heather Carter, LSW, Director of Social Services

New Medicare Cards

Have you received your new Medicare card yet?

The Medicare.gov website indicates that Ohio cards will mail after July 2018. It does not appear, from the information shown on the website, that any of the Ohio resi-

dent’s cards have been mailed yet (as of September 17, 2018).

As you are aware, Medicare started in April replacing the current red, white and blue cards. The new cards will no longer have your Social Security number on them. It will be replaced by a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).

Please be aware that there are scams regarding the Medicare card replacement. Do not accept phone calls from anyone asking for money to speed up the arrival of your new card. It is very dangerous to give out your old or new Medicare information to anyone over the phone. Medicare will never call you about some-thing like this.

If you have questions about this process, you can call the Social Service office at 701-3423. When you receive your new card, please be sure to provide a copy of the new card to the billing office. Your new ID listed on the card will be important for us to have on file. – Thank you.

What Families Need to Know is a series of educational programs offered by the Alzheimer’s Association. These programs will be offered in October. Meetings will be held in the Chapel on Tuesday evenings (October 2, 9, 16 & 23) from 6:30-8:30pm. Registration is free. Please con-tact the Social Service office at 701-3403 or the Alzheimer’s Association at 513-721-4284 to register.

Caregiver Support Group will meet October 4 from 1-2:30pm. This group is for residents and their families who are caring for a loved one. Please note there is a new meeting location for the Caregiver Sup-port Group. We will be meeting in the Chaplain’s Lounge.

File of Life – It is important to keep the information on your file of life up to date. A copy should be kept in

the magnetic pouch on your refrigerator as well as one in the Social Service office. Blank copies can be

“What Have I Got to Lose?” By Chuck Patterson

I have lived at 386 Village Drive almost 8 years> 4 with Martie, and nearly 4 without her. About three years ago, my right hip and left shoulder became very painful. After X-rays, etc., my PCP recommended seeing a Chiropractor. After several hundred dollars>no help. Then came several hundred dollars of Physical Ther-apy>still no help.

Last year in May the Renewal Fitness Center opened, and I thought, “What have I got to lose> and it’s free!” Erin, the Director of Wellness in the fitness center, introduced me to the NuStep machine, which is a recumbent stepping machine. After several months of 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the af-ternoon, 5 days a week on the NuStep, the pain has almost vanished! In fact, my whole body feels better, and I have more energy!

By the way, I have “self-diagnosed” the pain origin. Sixty-eight years ago, I was a “Varsity O” Fencer at The Ohio State University. The twists and turns and abuse for those three years took a toll, and finally caught up with me in 2016. If you would like a Fencing demonstration, just let me know!

The longer I live, the more I appreciate what a great place the Village is to be, and what great people live and work here.

P.S. Thank you, CVM, for The Renewal Fitness Center! It is such a good place to meet folks and make friends!

A Special Announcement By: Larry Monroe, President/CEO

Dear CVM Residents,

One of the things that inspires me about our community is the life stories, experiences, and giftedness of our residents. We have so many talented people living in our communities. It was recently suggested to me that one such person who is a gifted writer, Ruth Odor, would be a blessing to residents as a guest colum-nist in the Village News. I concur! In this issue is the first in a series of articles you can expect from Ruth. Enjoy!

CVM Auxiliary News

Auxiliary Update By: Judy Oliger

Please join us on Wednesday, October 3rd at 1pm in the Chapel for the 3rd quarter Auxiliary meeting. Reports from the chairpersons for several of our fundraisers will be presented. You will be voting on the officers and board members for 2019. We will also vote on Wish List items to be purchased by the Auxiliary to enhance the lives of our residents with an emphasis on those in nursing, requested by Nursing and Community Life Services.

If you would like to request transportation to/from the Craft/Bake Sale on November 3rd, please indi-cate this by choosing it on the Sign-Up Sheet.

In the past, many monetary donations have been

given to the Craft Sale or the Bake Sale. If you

would like to do this, make your check out to CVM

Auxiliary with craft sale or bake sale on the memo

line and turn in at the main desk.

September Mum Sale

By: Joanne Biedinger

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Annual Auxiliary Mum Sale the first week of September. The sale couldn’t happen without the volunteers who unloaded the 171 plants from the truck; those who helped organize the plants; sold the plants; and watered them. I really appreciate Betty Dailey who called the volunteers and our Maintenance men who set up and took down the tables.

Kroger Community Rewards By: Joanne Biedinger, 339-0491

A message to our residents who have a Kroger Plus Card (and haven’t registered with another charity): I would be happy to help you register your Kroger Plus Card for the Village Auxiliary to benefit from your purchases at any Kroger store. It doesn’t cost you anything and the Auxiliary will receive about 2% of your purchases>.which amounts to about $1,600 a year from the registered households in the Village.

Craft Sale Surprise! By: Judy Spraley

Are you a bird watcher? Have you ever seen alpaca nesting balls? They are large balls made from al-paca fur. The fur is bound together with twine. The ball can be hung from a tree or pole in front of your window. Then pull up your favorite chair and watch the birds come and investigate the hanging ball. It won’t take the birds very long to figure out that the ball contains soft fur that is just perfect for a new bird nest!! Students from the work study department at Mason High School make the alpaca balls and will be here on November 3 to be part of our craft sale.

Bake Sale By: Betty Dailey

The Bake Sale is on the same day as the Craft Sale. The delicious baked goods will once again be for sale in the Dining Room. Our Breakfast Sweet Sale will open at 8am. We will have muffins, coffee cakes, and possibly donuts. Please help us by bringing one of the above. Cost is $1 per slice or one muffin, etc. All proceeds support the Auxiliary.

Can you believe it is time to start thinking about what you are going to bake? Here are a few sug-gestions: candies, breads, pies, cookies, brownies, pineapple upside-down cake, yummy whole cakes. We need Garden Home and Apartment residents to bake. People love anything with nuts and peanut butter. Don’t forget to mark your items with or with-out nuts.

The Daileys will once again open their home for you to deliver your baked goods on November 2nd be-tween the hours of 9am and 6pm so that a team of volunteers can price the items to help save time on the day of the sale.

Thanks for serving our Lord.

REMEMBER November 3rd is the date of the BAKE SALE.

Book Sale By: Mary Ann Watrous

We are still in need of books for the Book Sale. Children's books too! Place donations in the library with a note indicating they are donations.

Residents Association By: George Breuer

The CVM Residents Association will meet Wednes-day, October 3rd, at 2pm in the Chapel. We will have updates about Village activities from Julia, our Auxiliary, and the CVM Veterans group. In addition, we will have a presentation by Larry Herms, who is Director of Media Relations with the Cincinnati Reds. Praise the Lord and play ball! "Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD" (Psalm 150:6 NIV).

As the time to elect new officers approaches, I an-ticipate having an informal ballot at the end of this meeting to get residents' input on whether the Resi-dents Association should continue to meet monthly or change to a less frequent schedule, such as quarterly if at all. Many of the communication func-tions the RA promotes are now being done very ca-pably by Larry Monroe's well-attended Town Hall meetings, Julia Larimer's great work with Village News and channel 1851, and other venues. Let me know what you think. God bless you all.

CVM Veterans Association By: Bob Moorehead

The CVM Veterans Association held their annual picnic September 20th and had the Warren County Veterans Services group present their program, in-cluding creating new State I.D.'s, useful for all travel and voting purposes.

Our next meeting will be held Thursday, November 15th, 2018 in the Chapel at 10am. The program will be presented by Raymond Hughes, USAF (Ret.) with a topic concerning his volunteer help with the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders. All residents are welcome to hear details of this awesome Historic Event of WW II.

Also, please remember to save your aluminum cans for the Veterans Assn. Bins are located near the rear exit/entrance door and adjacent to the Mainte-nance Garage at the rear of our property.

Getting to Know You: Tina Hester

By: Amelia Glenchur, CLS Coordinator

It’s Coming on Wednesday, the 31st!

By: Dick Biedinger

Halloween is my least favorite day. I’ve never cared much for anything pumpkin>..pie, bread, candy. But, I DO remember one thing from high school math: what do you get if you divide the circumfer-ence of a pumpkin by its diameter? “Pumpkin Pi”. The worst thing is Halloween candy corn! It is the only candy that has never been advertised because all the candy corn ever made was in 1911. By the way> 13 3/5 pieces of candy corn equals 100 calo-ries.

When I was little, a neighborhood kid actually looked better wearing his Halloween mask.

One time, the parents of my best friend dressed him up as the Pied Piper. Pretty soon all the dogs in the neighborhood were following him.

I learned why Leprechauns dress so funny. They are all single guys who never had a wife.

Upon leaving a Halloween party, one guy said: “I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn’t it.”

It’s bad enough in late October, but stores had Hal-loween decorations displayed on August 17. COME ON! One good thing about this time of year is that the cobwebs around the house suddenly be-come Halloween decorations.

Other News, Activities, and Events

Tina Hester is the Supervisor for the Nursing and Special Care areas of the Health Center. Prior to that, she was the Supervisor in the Assisted Living and Garden Apartments. Before that, she was the Back Hall Nurse on night shift in Nursing. She’s been with us eight years.

Tina heard about CVM from Lisa Cecil, our VP of Health Services. Tina enjoys working hand-in-hand with our nurses and STNAs to assist residents with their care needs and enjoy the highest quality of life possi-ble. She appreciates working one-on-one with residents and their loved ones to satisfy their wants and needs with a personalized care plan.

Tina grew up in a little house in Franklin, OH. She has been married to a wonderful, Godly man for 31 years. They met when she was 14-years-old and she knew he was a keeper! They have two terrific sons, Todd and Tate, and a lovely daughter-in-law, Amber.
