Happy Thanksgiving!
In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians
shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today
as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies.
For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were
celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn't until
1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham
Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held
each November. How will you be celebrating this year? However you observe the holiday
tomorrow and this weekend, we hope you have a safe and happy time with friends & family.
This time of year many of us find ourselves taking stock of our blessings and sharing
thanks for those blessings. I’d like to take a moment to thank all of you for your
support both for me personally and for the Chamber. The Chamber operates almost
totally on dues from our members, so your financial support is what allows us to
work for the good of Pike County. So, thanks!!
There are a few special “Chamber Blessings” for which I am especially thankful.
In fact, I purposely waited to finalize this newsletter so that I could update the info
today.
I am so thankful that the Zoe Theatre is getting the recognition it deserves and
will soon be on the National Register of Historic Places. I’ve been a part of the Zoe
Preservation Society since its inception and this is very exciting for us and for Pike
County. Last night the City of Pittsfield voted to renew our lease so we can continue
fundraising efforts and work towards rehabilitating the theater. Read more on Page 8.
I’m thankful that our young professional network got started and continues to grow.
YPike! met again last night. You can check their progress on Page 6. A membership
application is on Page 7.
I am thankful that the Pike County Endowment Fund has been established so that we
have another way of connecting people who care with causes that matter in Pike
County. Having been involved in the process, I can tell you that it was exciting to be at
the Friends of Philanthropy Celebration (Page 9) and see the Fund be acknowledged as
the model for other counties wishing to establish funds. More importantly, it is reward-
ing to see the first grant being made from this Endowment Fund, which will be made on
Tuesday, November 27th.
I am thankful for all the many small businesses in our area who make Pike
County special. Support them by shopping locally.
And, once again, I am thankful for all of you!

Mark your calendars for the first Thursday in November 2013, Thursday, November 7th, for our 4th
annual Girls Night Out!
Third Annual Girls’ Night Out
There was lots of fun, food, and shopping happening at the thirteen participating businesses around the
Square. Although not required, ladies were invited to meet at Lindsay’s Tavern to start their shopping
experience. There was a card which was stamped or initialed at each of these participating locations:
Babes Smokehouse, Casteel’s, Flowers-N-More, J. Roberts Jewelers, Just Di’s, Lindsay’s, Pike County
Collectibles, Pike County Express, Sassy Stitches, Temptations, The Hen House, US Cellular and the
William Watson Hotel. Once they visited all of the businesses, ladies either returned their cards to
Lindsay’s or left them at their last stop where they were picked up and entered into a drawing for door
prizes and Chamber Bucks (a Chamber program that promotes local shopping).
Although it is hard to get a count, a CONSERVATIVE estimate is that 110-115 ladies joined us! We do
know that 84 ladies returned completed cards, which means they visited all 13 businesses. We even had
a "bonus" stop when Pikeland Motors opened up with refreshments and goodies for the ladies. Thanks
Doug! Thanks to the businesses who participated, those who donated gifts, and to Hopewell Winery. A
special thanks to Heimer & Associates for their sponsorship of the event.
It was great to see the turnout– but even greater to hear the positive comments about our local businesses.
There were a number of long term residents who visited shops they didn’t realize were here or had never
visited before. They were amazed at the selection and quantity of items available right here in our own
backyards.
The Pike County Chamber of Commerce and Pittsfield Main
Street continued our efforts to promote local shopping by spon-
soring the third annual “Girls Night Out” on the Square in
Pittsfield on Thursday, November 1st from 5 PM until 7 PM.

Members of YPike! met on Tuesday, November 20th at Hopewell Winery.
Jeremy Wombles hosted this month’s event. YPike!, the Chamber’s newly
forming organization for young people in their 20s and 30s is attracting new
members and sponsors. Each meeting brings new faces. If we could ever
get all the members and prospective members in one place at the same time
it would be quite a big group!
This month’s meeting focused on beginning to develop a 2013 Plan of
Work. The group decided to table the plans for a New Year’s Eve Blast
for this year, and plans to start much earlier next year if a New Year’s party
is in the Plan of Work. YPike! will meet again on Tuesday, December
18th at 6:30 PM at the William Watson Hotel in Pittsfield. The group
will discuss committees, determine committee chairs and set priorities for 2013. We encourage you to visit YPike!
on Facebook at:https://www.facebook.com/#!/YPIKEIL and "Like” the page. YPike! will be communicating news
and events and posting their progress. Those not on FB can follow progress on the Chamber’s web site .
YPike wishes to thank the four local businesses that have come on board as Corporate Sponsors: Illinois Rural
Electric Cooperative, CASSCOMM (Cass Cable), Investment Centers of America, and CNB Bank & Trust. A
combination Membership/Corporate Sponsorship form is included on the next page, but can also be obtained by
contacting the Pike County Chamber of Commerce.

The Zoe Preservation Society and the City of Pittsfield are pleased to announce that the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory
Council (IHSAC) approved the recommendation of the Zoe Theatre for listing on the National Register of Historic Places
during their meeting on November 2, 2012.
Following the Council’s approval, the nomination was “nominated” by Amy Martin, the Illinois State Historic Preservation
Officer. The final step of the process is the review by the Keeper of the National Register. The property will be officially
listed on the National Register of Historic Places once the record of the nomination approval is published in the Federal Reg-
ister.
The National Register is administered by the National Park Service, and is the country’s official list of United States historic
sites considered “worthy of preservation.” Addition to the Register “honors the property by recognizing its importance to its
community, State, or the Nation.” Listing in the National Register provides recognition, assists in preserving our nation’s
heritage, and makes the property eligible for some financial incentives.
The Zoe Preservation Society and the City of Pittsfield worked with a consultant, Darius Bryjka, of In Alliance beginning in
April on the nomination which included extensive research and documentation about the architectural significance of the
theater. We are very excited to have this approval recommended by the IHSAC. It is the culmination of a lot of “behind the
scenes” work by ZPS and solidifies the historic significance of the theater. It also provides a platform for fundraising to re-
habilitate the Zoe.
Bill McCartney, Economic Development Director for the City of Pittsfield, says the City is also excited about the future list-
ing of the Zoe Theatre on the National Register. It brings attention to the theater and the City of Pittsfield and opens up new
doors for funding of the renovation of the theater. The City Council voted at its meeting on Tuesday, November 20th to
renew ZPS’ lease on the Zoe Theatre.
We will begin another round of fundraising efforts in the next few weeks, as well as another membership drive while we
wait for the official letter from the National Park Service regarding the National Register listing. We’d appreciate your help.
ZPS is a 501 (c ) 3 corporation whose mission is to save the Zoe Theatre and restore it to a working theater to provide year
round family entertainment. Donations are tax deductible and can be sent to ZPS, PO Box 283, Pittsfield, IL 62363.
Membership forms are available from the Pike County Chamber of Commerce office in Pittsfield, by calling 217-285-2971,
or by sending an email to [email protected]

The Community Foundation’s Friends of Philanthropy Celebration was held on November 15. Pike County was in
the spotlight when it was recognized for its success in establishing the Pike County Endowment Fund. This was an
exciting evening for those of us who have been involved with this process since its inception.
Jim Gay and Don Kirk, Pike County residents, shared the story about how concerns over assets that had left our
county motivated them to act. They knew those assets would not return and had talked about how to stem further
outflow. Don & Jim approached their Community Foundation and proposed building an endowment for Pike
County. A ‘pilot’ program began.
A group of fellow residents and community leaders with countywide responsibility began to meet to establish the
Pike County Endowment Fund which will support charitable needs and opportunities in the county. Through deter-
mination, hard work and support from individuals and businesses, we met the $15,000 needed to endow the fund.
On November 15, we announced that the fund has grown to the point where we can begin the next step—
grantmaking.
At the Friends of Philanthropy Celebration Brian Ippensen, chair of the Community Foundation’s Board of
Directors, announced that the Community Foundation was extending a gift opportunity to promote community-
based philanthropy and ensure permanent resources exist throughout the region. Each of the 13 counties in the
organization’s service area that builds its own endowment can get up to $15,000 in matching funds from the
Community Foundation.
Residents who come together to build their county endowment, as Pike County has done, will appreciate the benefits
provided by having charitable resources in their county—forever. As with Pike County, each county will form its
own Fund Council, comprised of county residents who will be responsible for guiding fundraising and grantmaking
efforts. In addition to the matching funds, the Community Foundation will offer its charitable status, not-for-profit
expertise, investment experience and grant distribution services.
The Pike County Endowment Fund is a way to ‘keep local money working for local causes,’ said Pike County
Endowment Fund Council Representative Kent Hawley. “Anyone can make a gift of any amount to help the fund
grow.”
Gifts to the Pike County Endowment Fund are tax-deductible as allowed by law. The Pike County Endowment Fund
is administered through the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area, a not-for-profit organization with 501(c)(3)
status. To make gifts or learn more about the fund, contact me here at the Chamber office.
