Chamber Perspective The longest day of the year and the first official day of summer is fast approaching. Summer Solstice is at 11:54 am on Friday, June 21st this year. Before we jump into summer, we had a very busy May: * 3 Sons Tours held a BAH and Ribbon Cutting to introduce their new business. * Thomas’s Fine Jewelry held a BAH to Celebrate their 3rd year on Poplar Street. * Chris Herren came to town to present to students at Dorchester County Schools and to the public on May 14th and 15th. While the turnout was not great the message he delivered regarding addiction was impactful. * On May 15th we teamed up with the other 4 Chambers on the Upper Shore and Chesapeake College to host the Annual Five County Mixer. The event was well attended at the Wye Mills Campus. * On May 21st and 22nd we attended awards presentations at CSD and NDHS to present the 2019 Chamber Foundation Scholarships. Watch for details on the 2019 Scholars in next month’s issue. The summer schedule is full of activities and June represents a busy month for the Chamber and Dorchester County in general. (See the back page of this Chamber Connection and/or visit our website www.dorchesterchamber.org for specifics on June events.) The Chamber has two signature events in June. The Chamber Challenge Boat

Docking at Long Wharf on Sunday, June 2nd and the 10th Annual Celebrate Dorchester is being held at Governor’s Hall on Tuesday, June 18th. These events are very different, but both are a great time and highlight some of the great things Dorchester County has to offer. Visit our website to get more information on each of these events and join us to have fun and celebrate. On June 13th we are hosting our third member orientation session for 2019. The session is being held at Palm Beach Willies on their enclosed deck overlooking Slaughter Creek. The session will begin at 3:30 pm and once we are complete attendees are invited to stay for cocktails and appetizers. The session is a great way to learn about the Chamber and how you can get the most out of your membership. On June 11th at Noon Chris Hauge will provide an update and overview of the new North Dorchester High School that will be opening in the fall of next year. If you have not seen any of the details about the school, you will not want to miss this presentation. We will be at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort and Spa for this luncheon so you know you will eat well in a relaxing setting. Chesapeake College recently announced Brandon Hesson has taken over as the Director for the Cambridge Center. On June 27th at 5:30 the Cambridge Center will be hosting a Business After Hours to Celebrate 40 years in Cambridge. Come out to learn

what the College has planned for the next 40 years. We have teamed up with the other 4 Chambers on the upper shore (Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne and Talbot) to bring Glenn Shepard to Chesapeake College to deliver one of his impactful management seminars. The seminar will be held at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills on June 27th. This program has been approved for 5 (General) recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute and SHRM The North American Tri-Club Championships are being held at the 2019 Eagleman on June 9th. There are over 3,000 athletes registered for this event and it is a big deal for Dorchester County. It was through the efforts of Gerry Boyle that the County was able to secure this recognition. The loss of Gerry has had a huge impact on many throughout the community. On Friday, June 7th at Governor’s Hall there will be a welcome ceremony for the athletes and as part of that event there will be a Celebration of Life for Gerry Boyle. As always, thank you for your support of the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce. If you have any business-related questions or concerns, or just want to get to know us better, feel free to visit, call, or e-mail us. We will always do our best to assist you. Bill, Robin and Robin

Joel Bunde takes the helm as Chairman of the Board In April 2019 the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted unanimously to have Joel Bunde take over as Chairman of the Board after the passing of Chairman Gerry Boyle. Joel was the Chairman Elect and slated to take over the Board leadership role in January 2020. In addition to taking on the role as Chairman for the remainder of 2019 Joel has agreed to serve his original 2020 term as well. Past Board Chairmen Lori Nagel and Jeff Hubbard have agreed to cover the duties of the Vice Chairman until such time as the position is filled by the Board. IRONClub Maryland Announces New Board Members

Booster Club Raises Money and Awareness to Ensure IRONMAN Events

Remain in Dorchester County

IRONClub Maryland – the advocacy organization founded in 2014 by Gerry Boyle and Amanda Fenstermaker to support IRONMAN endurance events in Dorchester County – announced the appointment of six new board members. They are: Dion Banks, Susan Banks, John Burtman, Jason Chance, Natalie Chabot and Emma Diaz.

“We are excited to welcome this talented team of triathlon professionals, volunteers and advocates to IRONClub,” said Fenstermaker. “Each has been instrumental in making Dorchester one of the nation’s most highly respected and welcoming hosts for these prestigious races and we look forward to growing our base of loyal supporters with their leadership.”

The non-profit booster organization supports IRONMAN endurance events, promotes community and business involvement, and coordinates fundraising for the IRONMAN Maryland licensing fee. The $100,000 annual fee generates millions of dollars in economic impact for the region and results in direct spending at county retailers, restaurants, and service providers. The events have also produced significant community investments by the IRONMAN Foundation which has awarded numerous grants to Dorchester organizations including Dorchester County Public Schools and the Dorchester County Family YMCA.

The six new members join Fenstermaker and the founding board: Bill Christopher, Tom Hutchinson, Sara Lettelleir, Heather Rosato and Andrea Vernot. Fenstermaker also announced that Hutchinson, a 2017 IRONMAN Maryland finisher, has stepped into a leadership position with the Club. He will be the organization’s Chief Ironman Booster (CIB) and spearhead efforts to motivate, organize and recruit club members.

“I believe Dorchester County and the City of Cambridge are a perfect place to race IRONMAN,” said Hutchinson. “I am hopeful that more businesses who prosper from both Eagleman and

IRONMAN Maryland will join our team so we can ensure these events remain here for many years to come.”

Since 2014, more than 300 individuals and organizations have joined the club. Membership fees range from $25 to $5,000. To become a member or learn about IRONClub, visit www.ironclubmd.org.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Recognizes Volunteers

at Blackwater NWR

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service recently recognized volunteers of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) during National Volunteer Week in celebration of the outstanding contributions they have made to Blackwater NWR during 2018. Volunteers assist in all aspects of the refuge, from staffing the Visitor Center seven days a week, maintaining the butterfly garden, and assisting with environmental education and outreach events, to carpentry projects, nest box monitoring, facility and trail maintenance, bird surveys, boundary posting, and more. During 2018, 280 volunteers contributed 11,588 hours of their time to the refuge.

Every year, Blackwater NWR honors and distinguishes a volunteer for their exemplary performance throughout the year. This year, Sue Fischer of East New Market received the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award for her dedicated service to the refuge. Ms. Fischer has helped to develop the refuge’s environmental education programs, and delivers programs to hundreds of students each year. She staffs the information desk in the Visitor Center, assists with special events, and in 2018, she initiated bringing the Master Naturalist program to the refuge, thereby training many of the refuge’s current volunteers and introducing new volunteers to the refuge. Ms. Fischer has donated over 625 hours of volunteer service to the refuge since 2012, and has contributed many additional hours to the Friends of Blackwater in her role as bookstore manager.

Special recognition was also given to volunteers reaching key milestones in their service to Blackwater NWR. Award pins and certificates were presented to the following volunteers for reaching milestones in the number of years they have volunteered at Blackwater NWR: Janet Kerr, Jane Sebring and Joe Soares for five years of service, Tom Johnson for 10 years of service, Kathy Walker for 15 years of service, and Cindy Bech and Erin Smail for 20 years of service. Terry Allen and Harry Armistead also received recognition for leading bird walks on the refuge for 35 years.

Thomas’s Fine Jewelry Donates to For All Seasons Kits

Thomas’s Fine Jewelry in Cambridge donated sterling silver Hope Hearts necklaces to be included in For All Seasons “Comfort Kits” for victims of rape, sexual assault, abuse, or a traumatic experience as part of the agency’s Sexual Assault Awareness Campaign in April. “Comfort Kits” enable For All Seasons Victim Advocates to bring comfort on every call to the hospital to support these survivors. Each “Comfort Kit” includes a nice travel bag, basic clothing, footwear, and undergarments, personal hygiene items, a journal, and other items to return dignity, provide comfort, and let them know someone cares.

Thomas’s Fine Jewelry is owned by brother and

sister, Thomas and Amanda Robinson. The shop opened in 2016 and features custom-made and handcrafted jewelry with unique designs. Amanda helps design the jewelry that Thomas creates. The two relocated to Cambridge after spending summers in Dorchester County with their family.

Thomas comments about the project, “We are donating 25 necklaces to For All Seasons for the ‘Comfort Kits.’ We were excited that we could find a necklace like this with an uplifting message of hope on it.”

Amanda adds, “This is our first community project. It is something we can stand behind and support and we are thrilled to be involved.”

Mid-Shore Realtors & Jimmie & Sooks fundraise for Mid-

Shore Meals til Monday

Mid-Shore Board of Realtors (MSBR) held a fundraiser at Jimmie & Sooks in Cambridge and raised $3,750.00 for Dorchester County Meals til Monday. Jimmie & Sooks contributed a dinner for 2 that was raffled off and donated a percentage of that nights’ profits to Mid-Shore Meals til Monday.

Meals til Monday also celebrated their 2 year anniversary with a cake thanking all their volunteers. Founded in 2017, they began feeding 25 students in the founders home kitchen, now the program helps over 350 children in Dorchester County, noted Leslie Bishop, Co-Founder of MidShore Meals til Monday. There are approximately 1,000 children who have been identified as food deprived, and the goal is to reach as many of these students as possible. There are 40 volunteers who pack the food and with no overhead expenses, this allows 100% of all contributed funds to go to the cost of the food.

Last September, the directors added Maces Lane Middle School to the program but did not have a way to fund it. Mid-Shore Board of Realtors stepped in and gave the program a $3,000 check. We are a "backpack program", says Bishop, sending home nutritious food to help food-insecure school children in Dorchester County each week, as well as children attending summer programs, so this is a year-round program. We help "bridge the gap" from when the child goes home on Friday "til Monday" when breakfast and lunch is provided at school. We serve about one-third of the at-risk school children in Dorchester County.

They also have provided the students with hats and gloves in the winter and toothbrushes and toothpaste. For more information about how you can help please call them at 443 225-6789 or visit

www.midshoremealstilmonday.org, Dormaim Green, MSBR President, commented that this was a fun night, where everyone could have dinner with family and friends and buy a raffle ticket to help a good cause. The Realtors and Affiliate members appreciate all that Meals til Monday and their volunteers do to help feed these children. Having weekend food, the students can focus on their academic success and not be distracted by hunger or by concerns about where their next meal is coming from. Amanda Bramble, owner of Jimmie and Sooks noted that the staff was also moved by the need and added their personal contributions to the restaurant’s check.

MSBR plans to hold more fundraisers for these school food programs in all three counties they serve. In Talbot County, there is Carepacks and in Caroline County, the program is called Food for Learning; both programs, like Meals til Monday, provide food to students outside of the school system.

The Mid-Shore Board of REALTORS® has over 500 Realtors and Affiliates from Caroline, Dorchester, and Talbot Counties. The mission of the Mid-Shore Board of Realtors (MSBR) is to advocate for its members and the public to preserve the right to own, transfer and utilize real property. MSBR provides its members with resources to conduct business professionally in accordance with the Realtors Code of Ethics.

Celebrate Dorchester 10th Year Anniversary

Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at 5:30 p.m.

Sailwinds West at Governor’s Hall 200 Byrn Street, Cambridge, MD

The event is designed to allow Dorchester County residents to celebrate all we have to offer related to food and our heritage. Each

year we gather local ingredients from purveyors in the County: Fresh seafood, meat, poultry, grains, fruit and vegetables, all grown

and raised in the region. We then give those ingredients to local chefs to use to produce a dish to serve attendees at the event. The chefs do not know what they will get and are competing with other local chefs to produce a dish worthy of the People Choice Award.

Call to purchase your tickets at 410-228-3575 or purchase online at ww.dorchesterchamber.org.
