THE CHALLENGE OF S-A-V-E

Do you realize that if you are anearnest Christian young person,

you may be able to do something thissummer that some of us older Chris­tians would almost give our right armto be able to do? No, I'm not exag­gerating. Some of you can make animpact on youngsters in a "foreignfield"; an impact some will not forgetas long as they live, and perhaps inheaven too. You can do it by volun­teering (or by being drafted?) toserve on a S-A-V-E team this summer.That's Students As Volunteer Evan­gelists.

It won't be easy, but it will be ex­citing. It won't be part time; it willtake all you have and then some. Yourfeet will hurt from walking, and yourmuscles will be sore from throwingyourself into the activities. Your heartmay ache too, for the kids you willtry to love for Jesus' sake. But thepay is great. Not money. Money can­not begin to buy the satisfaction thatcomes in doing something like thisfor Jesus. You'll be away from homeand friends but you will get acquaintedwith another OPC and you will get tomeet and make some new Christianfriends.

A Challenge to ChurchesWhy not ask for a S-A-V-E team

to help you this summer? We had agreat time last summer with a teamfor the first time. We old-timerssometimes think no one can do thingsquite so well as we can, but last sum­mer I realized afresh what a tremen­dous reservoir of largely untapped en­thusiasm, energy, zeal and dedicationto the Savior there is in the kind ofyoung people who are selected forthese teams. Why not apply to havea team come to help you? A fellowpastor testifies, "What a blessing theywere to our church and youngpeople!"

Or why not send a S-A-V-E teammember or members? The homechurch recommends team members andpays their travel expenses to and fromthe field where they serve. If youhave in your congregation any young

people of team calibre, you ought tourge them to apply and pledge your­selves to support them. Despite our comforting Christianfaith, however, we may be

tempted to wonder why our Saviourhas seen fit to call from us at thistime one whom we so greatly needand love and one whose life was sointerwoven with our own that it seemsas if a vital part of us has gone withhim. Was not our loved one at theheight of his powers, mature in schol­arship, with a testimony which wasrespected and influential around. theworld? Was he not unusually giftedto speak to all sorts and conditions ofmen today ? Were not his gifts soughtafter not only in his own seminaryand denomination, but in other insti-

in Sorrowtutions and denominations as well?Did he not have an exemplary zeal,so greatly needed in our times, for thewhole counsel of God and for the in­errant, infallible holy Scriptures?

Did he not commend his doctrinewith a godly life which endeared himto his family and to his countlessfriends? Despite the incessant de­mands on him to perform large andprominent tasks, he always seemed tofind the time to come to the side ofhis friends in their less conspicuousand humbler needs. He was presentto weep with them when they weptand to rejoice with them when theyrejoiced. Yes, we may wonder whyour Lord has called him now - nowat the height of his usefulness, in aday when he seemed to be especiallyneeded by so many.

With the LordBut if such questions arise and if

we cannot, because of our limitations,provide detailed answers to them, weknow that our Lord does not ruleover his people in any capricious way."Precious in the sight of the Lordis the death of his saints" (Psalm116: 15). He does not call them untiltheir appointed time. Their departurefrom this life of labor and witnessingis highly valued in his sight. Andwhen our Lord calls them at the timewhich he wisely chooses, they fallasleep in him and through him. Truly,blessed are the dead who die in theLord, who rest from their labors andwhose works do follow them (Rev.14:13). For them to be absent fromthe body is to be present with theLord - to die is gain for them (Phil.1:21-23; II Cor. 5:8).

Of late our loved one had feltunusually tired. And the few whoknew about it may have expected himsoon to regain his strength and con­tinue to do the work and bear theburdens of two or three men. But thistime our Lord graciously called himfrom his arduous labors and into hispromised rest.

To Him, to the Father, and to theHoly Spirit, our help and our hope inlife and in death, be glory and ma­jesty, dominion and power, both nowand ever. Amen.

We would also not forget in oursuffering that our Saviour fulfilled forhis sheep all the requirements of thelaw of God and earned eternal lifefor them.

He died that we might be forgiv'n,He died to make us good,That we might go at last to heav'n,Saved by his precious blood.There was no other good enoughTo pay the price of sin;He only could unlock the gateOf heav'n, and let us in.

. In the time of our affliction wewould not obscure by any doubts orquestionings the glorious truth whichour Lord taught us when he said: "Iam the resurrection, and the life: hethat believeth in me, though he weredead, yet shall he live: and whosoeverliveth and believeth in me shall neverdie" (John 11 :25-26).

Although we mourn, we do notmourn as those without hope; but wewould rejoice in the saving love andempowering presence of the Lambwho was slain and who is worthy "toreceive power, and riches, and wis­dom, and strength, and honour, andglory, and blessing" (Rev. 5: 12) .

Beloved congregation of the LordJesus Christ, in the shattering

bereavement which we have suffered,our help can come only from oursovereign God. We must find ourcomfort in the knowledge that heworks all things, including our presentsorrow, after the counsel of his willfor his own glory and for the goodof those who love him and who arethe called according to his purpose(Eph. 1:11; Rom. 8:28).

Our grieving hearts do not ask forany poet to justify the ways of Godto man. As our loved one knew andnow knows, our great God and Saviourdoes all things well. His unfailinglove can warm our hearts in life andin the solemn hour of death.

Indeed, especially in our anguishand distress, we would not for an in­stant becloud the love and the powerof our merciful Saviour and the fullperfection of him whose kingdomruleth over all (Psalm 103:19). Wehave but One to whom to turn: wehave One who provides unfailingcomfort in life and in death. Wewould not in our grief fail to magnifythe gospel of grace which is the powerof God unto salvation to every onethat believeth (Rom. 1: 16).

We would not forget that we allhave sinned and that we come shortconstantly of the glory of God (Rom.3:23); that we merit in ourselvesnothing but the wrath and curse ofGod, misery in this life, and the painsof eternal punishment. We would notforget that we were unable to saveourselves from our sins, that nothingwhich we could offer, no works whichwe could perform, could satisfy thejustice of God for our guilt.The Gospel's Comfort

We would rejoice in the good newsthat the eternal Son of God, the sec­ond person of the Trinity, came tothis world, took to himself a true hu­man nature, yet without sin, and suf­fered and died in the place of hispeople to save them from their sins.We would glory in the cross of himwho was "despised and rejected ofmen, a man of sorrows and acquaintedwith grief."

"Surely he hath borne our griefs,and carried our sorrows: yet we didesteem him stricken, smitten of God,and afflicted. But he was wounded forour transgressions, he was bruised forour iniquities: the chastisement of ourpeace was upon him; and with hisstripes we are healed. All we like

Can we trust our Bible?S ometime ago there appeared a car­toon in a religious magazine. One

glance was sufficient to show that itwas a unique cartoon. Its purpose wasnot to produce a smile but to conveya truth. An elderly man and his wifewere shown seated at a table readingthe Bible. Underneath were the wordswhich the wife spoke to her husband:"Read it again, where it says, 'I amthe resurrection and the life.' "

An elderly couple, knowing thattheir time upon this earth would notlast much longer, were finding com­fort in the words of Christ. They werefacing the future, looking even beyondthe grave with hope, for they wereplacing all their confidence in thetruthfulness of what Jesus Christ hadspoken.

Can the Bible be trusted today?Did Jesus Christ really speak thewords which brought such consolationto this elderly couple? And, if hedid speak those words, how do weknow they are trustworthy? How dowe know that the accounts of Christin the Bible have been accuratelytransmitted to us? Has not modernscience and scholarship generallyshown that the old-fashioned view ofGod as Creator of the world is onethat can no longer be held by think­ing people? Is not the Bible filledwith unscientific statements?

Questions such as these are con­stantly being raised, and they havehad a share in creating doubt anduncertainty in the minds of men.

There are some who flatly assertthat the Bible is nothing more thana human book, subject to the limita­tions that accompany everything hu­man, and that the traditional view ofthe Bible as the infallible Word ofGod simply must be abandoned. Thereare others today who tell us that theBible is the Word of God, but theygo on to assert that we cannot trustall of its statements. When it speaksof spiritual matters, they assure us,we may trust it, but we cannot expectto find scientific accuracy in mattersof detail. In the realm of faith andpractice, the Bible, we are told, is atrustworthy guide, but in questions ofhistory, geography and the like, itcontains its share of errors.

To say the least, these are not com­forting assertions. If the Bible is likeevery other book, in that it is merelya human production, it follows thatthere is no point in turning to theBible to hear the voice of the livingGod. And if the Bible is trustworthyonly in matters of faith and life butnot in historical points, then the ques­tion immediately arises, "Who is todecide what is a matter of faith andlife ?"

Furthermore, even a cursory read­ing of the Bible makes it clear thatChristianity is an historical religion,based upon what God has done hereupon this earth in history. If, there­fore, we begin to assert that the Bibleis not completely trustworthy in his­torical matters, it is pertinent to askwhere this trustworthiness begins andwhere it ends.

The resurrection of Christ, for ex­ample, is an historical fact. There aresome, however, who think that we canhave Christianity without the physical,bodily resurrection of the Lord. Arethey correct when they tell us that ascientifically-trained mind cannot ac­cept the doctrine of the resurrection?What is to be the position of theevery-day Bible-believing Christian asto these many questions constantlybeing raised?

What the Bible ClaimsOne thing is clear. If we are to

be earnest Christians we cannot ignorethem. We can give to every one thatasks us a reason for the hope that iswithin us (see I Pet. 3 :15). And wemay turn to the Bible to learn whatclaims it makes for itself. One neednot search far in the Scriptures to dis­cover the claim that they make as totheir nature and origin, but we shallconfine ourselves to the considerationof just two passages.

In writing to Timothy, Paul makestwo assertions about the Scriptures (IITim. 3:16). He speaks of all Scriptureas being inspired and profitable. Schol­ars have discussed the meaning of thistext, and while there are differencesof opinion and much has been writ­ten on the subject, nevertheless, wemay say that Paul is talking about allScripture and makes two predicatesabout all Scripture.

In the first place he asserts thatall Scripture is "inspired of God."Paul, of course, wrote in Greek, andthe Greek word which he uses at thispoint is tbeopneustos. The rendering"inspired of God" is an unhappy one,for inspiration is the breathing intosomething, and that is not what theGreek word here means. A much bet­ter and more accurate rendering is"God-breathed." When Paul assertsthat all Scripture is God-breathed,what he means is that all Scripturewas spoken by God. To put it simply,all Scripture is God's Word.

God-breathedThere are passages elsewhere in the

Bible which say the same thing. Forexample, we read phrases such as"And God said," "And God spakeall these words, saying," "The mouthof the Lord hath spoken it." Theseall attest the great fact that the Scrip­ture is the product of the divinebreath.

This emphasis, we may note, isquite contrary to that of men today.Today men speak about the humanside of the Bible but say comparativelylittle about its divine origin. Andwhen they do speak of the divineorigin, they very often do so dis­paragingly, suggesting that the Bibledid not drop down from heaven.

Paul, however, thought that theimportant thing for Timothy to knowwas that the Scriptures are from God,for when he declares that they are"God-breathed," he is asserting theirdivine origin about as clearly as canbe done.

What a strange statement this ut­terance of Paul's is! He says not aword about the human writers of theBible nor about the situation in whichthe writings came into existence. Nordoes he concern himself about thetypes of literature and writing that arefound in the Scriptures. His one con­cern is that Timothy should know thatthe Scriptures are of divine origin;they are God-breathed.

In the second place, Paul declaresthat the Scriptures are profitable. Thisalso is an emphasis not heard oftentoday. Paul does not tell us that onlycertain Scriptures are profitable, northat only those parts of the Bible that

are immediately connected with theplan of salvation are profitable. In­stead, Paul declares that all Scriptureis profitable.Profitable

We may indeed be thankful thathe has so spoken, for we are temptedto pick and choose in the Bible. Nat­urally some parts appeal to us morethan others, and we are likely to con­centrate upon those parts. We haveour favorite passages, and the resulttoo often is that we allow large por­tions of the Bible to be neglected.But this is wrong. We neglect theBible at our own loss.

What Paul says is that all of Scrip­ture is profitable. If we heed hiswords we shall read all of Scripture,and the strange thing is that, as wedo this, we make the discovery thatPaul is right. At first sight it maynot appear to us that some portionsof the Bible are of particular signifi­cance and relevance, but the more weread the Bible, the more we realizethat all of it, without exception, is forour learning and admonition.

As a companion to the passage inTimothy we may consider brieflyPeter's words in which he tells usabout the human writers of the Bible(II Pet. 1:21). Peter speaks of theprophetic aspect of the Bible and tellsus that it came not by the will ofman. This is a clear-cut rejection ofthe idea of a merely human origina­tion of the Scriptures. There are timeswhen one must be negative in orderthat the positive truth may moreclearly be understood.

Although the Bible is not of humanorigination, nevertheless, so Peter ar­gues, it was written by holy men ofold, and these holy men wrote not ontheir own authority but as they were

being borne along by the Holy Spirit.The figure is striking, for it suggeststhat the human writers of the Biblewere actually being carried by the HolySpirit as they wrote. This, of course,implies that they were completely sub­ject to him. We may accurately bringout the force of the passage if wesay that the writers of the Bible weresuperintended by the Holy Spirit sothat they wrote precisely what he de­sired them to write.

In the light of these two passageswe may assert that the Scriptures arethe very Word of God and that theywere written down by holy men ofGod's choosing who were superin­tended by the Holy Spirit as theywrote, so that the resultant productwas the written Word of God.

In the view of Scripture which wehave just presented there is a mystery.The thinking person will ask how itis possible for the Bible to originatewith God, and yet for men to writedown the Scripture, unless these menwere mere secretaries who worked ina mechanical fashion as they wrotewhat was dictated to them. Indeed,thre are those who claim that we whoaccept the Bible do believe in a "dic­tation" theory of inspiration. But theBible itself makes it clear that thehuman writers whom God chose werenot treated as so many typewriters.

Responsible Human WritersIn the writing of the Bible, God

used their own personalities and char­acteristics, so that in a very real sensedifferent portions of the Bible maybe attributed to them. The style ofPaul is certainly unique, as is thatof John. These men were not mererobots, but living responsible writers,who, although superintended by the

Spirit of God, nevertheless, wrote thepassages of Scripture attributed tothem. The Bible therefore is theWord of God given to us throughthe media of human writers.

If, however, the Bible is the Wordof God, then it follows that all thatGod has spoken is trustworthy. Wedo a man a grave injustice if, whenhe speaks the truth, we refuse to be­lieve his words. We do God a graveinjustice if we refuse to believe hiswords. It follows as the night the daythat if God has spoken a word, thatword must be true. To assert other­wise is to fall into the grossest kindof idolatry; it is to exalt the opinionof the creature above the truth of theCreator.

For this reason we speak of the in­fallibility and inerrancy of the Scrip­tures, and in so doing we are takinga Biblical position. If the Bible isGod' s Word, so the church has rea­soned, what it teaches must be thetruth and we must believe that truth.The Bible cannot deceive us. Thus,men speak of the infallibility of theBible. This simply means that theBible does not deceive. Whateverthe Bible teaches is to be believedbecause the Bible teaches the truth;it is infallible in all that it says. Thismeans that no matter what the Biblesays, we may believe it and not bedeceived.

If the Bible teaches that Adam wascreated by God (Gen. 2:7), we mayaccept that fact with the assurance thatwe are accepting the truth. If theBible teaches that Moses wrote (Mark12:26; John 5:46, 47), we may as­suredly believe that fact; if the Bibleteaches that Jesus Christ rose from thedead (John 20), we may believe thattruth and not fear that we shall laterhave to abandon it. The Bible IS In­

fallible.

Infallible and InerrantThe Bible is also inerrant. This

means that whatever the Scriptures saythey tell the truth, and their state­ments are to be trusted. When theytell us that the blood of Jesus Christcleanseth from all sin (I Pet. 1:19),we may rest assured that this is true

and that later investigations of menwill not prove the contrary. When theBible speaks of Tirhakah in connec­tion with Sennacherib (II Kings19:9), we may likewise be sure thatit is speaking the truth and that, eventhough we today may not know asmuch about Tirhakah as we mightwish, what the Scripture says aboutthis ancient king is in strict accordwith the fact.

likewise, when the Bible says thatGod spoke, "let there be light" (Gen.1 :3), we need not fear that sciencewill some day make the discovery thatthis assertion is not true. We simplyaccept what the Bible says because theBible is the Word of God.

It has not been our purpose to dis­cuss difficulties involved in certain de­tails of the Bible itself. That there aredifficulties no thinking person woulddeny. But these difficulties seem al­most trifling when compared withthose that are inherent in any otherposition than that the Bible is God'sWord.

The Christian may place his con­fidence in the words of the Bible andhe need not be dismayed by the manyattacks that are being made today uponit. If the Bible is the Word of God­and because of the inward testimonyof the Holy Spirit the Christian iscompelled to believe that it is - thenit follows that the Bible is infallibleand inerrant and that we may reposeour confidence not merely in some,but in all of its wondrous declarations.For it is truly the holy Scripture whichis able to make one wise unto salva­tion through faith which is in ChristJesus.

Professor Edward J. Young, Ph.D.,a member of the Old Testament

department in Westminster Theologi­cal Seminary since 1936, suffered aheart attack just as he arrived homefrom the day's work on February 14.Death came quietly within minutes ashe was taken to the hospital, and aloyal servant passed into the presenceof the Savior to whom he had de­voted a life of unswerving toil.

Dr. Young was known and re­spected around the world as a faithfulinterpreter of the infallible and iner­rant Word of God. Among otherplaces, within the past year he hadlectured at a lutheran conference in

Minnesota, at Toronto Baptist Semi­nary (a week of studies on "The Au­thority of Scripture" is now appearingin the Gospel Witness) and at l'AbriFellowship in Switzerland. Former stu­dents of his are teaching on threecontinents.

Author of a dozen books, Dr.Young had very recently completedthe manuscript of the third and finalvolume of his Commentary on Isaiah.Among his other works are TheProphecy of Daniel, Introduction tothe Old Testament, Arabic for Begin­ners, My Servants the Prophets, WhoWrote Isaiah? and Thy Word IsTruth.

He was editor of The WestminsterTheological Journal and of The NewInternational Commentary on the OldTestament, Two recent paperbacksshowed his ability to combine exegeti­cal with devotional studies: Psalm 139and Genesis 3.

He was second to none in his re­search in depth of the Scriptures, witha reading knowledge of thirty or morelanguages, ancient and modern. Writ­ing articles for various journals yearafter year, Dr. Young did not neglectthe ordinary reader in his conscien­tious effort to explain Biblical truthand its relevance as the Word of God.A willing listener and counsellor, hewas esteemed as a friend by pupils,colleagues and many others.

Ordained to the ministry in SanFrancisco in 1935 by the PresbyterianChurch in the U. S. A., Dr. Young

became a rnrruster in the OrthodoxPresbyterian Church in 1936. Activein the local church, the presbytery andthe general assembly, in 1956 heserved as moderator of the latter bodyand for many years was a member ofits Committee on Christian Education,for which he wrote a number oftracts. He was serving on its advisorycommittee at the time of his death.An amateur cellist - for several yearshe belonged to the Old York RoadSymphony Orchestra - and a studentof hymnody, Dr. Young labored forthe fifteen years of its existence asa member of the committee which pro­duced Trinity Hymnal in 1961.

After graduating from Stanford(A.B. in 1929) he studied in Madridand in the Newman School of Mis­sions in Jerusalem. Receiving both hisTh.B. and Th.M. from WestminsterSeminary in 1935, he studied for ayear at the University of leipzig be­fore joining the seminary's Old Testa­ment department in 1936. In 1943 heobtained the Ph.D. degree fromDropsie College of Hebrew and Cog­nate learning, Philadelphia.

gagements on four continents, Dr.Young was on occasion a guest pro­fessor at the Winona lake SummerSchool of Theology and twice par­ticipated in that school's Flying Semi­nar to the Bible lands. He was amember of the American Oriental So­ciety, the Evangelical Theological So­ciety and the Society of Biblical liter­ature and Exegesis.

Professor Young's courses at West­minster Seminary for this year arebeing completed by Dr. John Zinkand,associate professor of Old Testament,and Mr. Thomas Nicholas, doctoralcandidate at Dropsie College.

Dr. Young is survived by his wife,lillian; a son, Davis, a candidate forhis doctorate in geology at BrownUniversity; a daughter, Jean (Mrs.Richard Gaffin, Jr.) and three Gaffingrandchildren; and a brother in Cali­fornia.

Funeral services took place in Cal­vary Church of Glenside with a hostof friends present from far and near.Pastor Henry Coray and ProfessorJohn Skilton, whose message appearselsewhere in this issue, participated.Interment was in George WashingtonMemorial Park. Dr. Young hadreached his sixtieth birthday on No­vember 29, 1967.

so it was with Edward JosephYoung, whom it pleased God to

take suddenly from this life in the lateafternoon of February 14, 1968. Oneday he was here with us in the vigorof his yeoman service of the Lord;and the next, we were trying to adjustto the realization that our belovedfriend "was not" - for God hadcalled him unto himself, granting hima much needed rest from his toil.

Dr. Young was first of all a humbleservant of the Lord his God, walkingwith him in faith day by day, devotedto his helpmeet, his children andgrandchildren. He was present morn­ing and evening and at midweekprayer in the house of the Lord, andon the final Sabbath of his earthlylife he saw his six-week-old grand­daughter baptized. He loved the churchwhere he worshipped, visiting itsmembers at home or in the hospitalwhen illness came. A sympathetic lis­tener to many who sought his coun­sel, he was regarded by all, includinghis students, as a friend in the bondsof that precious fellowship which isours in Jesus Christ.

A zealous minister of the gospel,Dr. Young found delight in preachingthe Word. This he did with carefulattention to its exegesis. He spoke withwarmth and power-the power of theauthority of "Thus saith the Lord."His concern for his hearers was seenin the simplicity with which he soughtto make plain just what the Bibletaught and how it was to be appliedin his listeners' lives. Salvation bygrace through the cleansing blood ofGod's dear Son was at the core of hismessage.

it to say that he has left a mark inthe evangelical and reformed worldthat will not be easily approached. Thetwentieth century church stands muchin his debt.

In all that we say we would giveall the glory to God, as did our quietand modest friend, for he never failedto acknowledge the source of hisknowledge and gifts. A lifetime ofstudy and interpretation of the in­spired and inerrant Word of hisheavenly Father was his witness to thereality and depth of a faith thattrusted alone in the blessed Savior ofsinners offered to us in the gospel.

Our sympathy is extended to hisloved ones in their loss. WestminsterSeminary, the Orthodox PresbyterianChurch, and many friends will misshim. But we bow, as he always did,in submission to the will of the merci­ful God of heaven and earth, and werejoice in the hope of the resurrection.

Psalm 11 :3: If the foundations bedestroyed, what can the righteous do?

Another, and certainly more arrest­ing, paraphrase of that verse is:

"When the foundations were beingdestroyed, what were the righteousdoing?" Can anyone question that thefoundation of the moral order inAmerica - which, in turn, is thefoundation of law and government ­is being fiercely attacked and danger­ously shaken today?

The Bible deals with individuals ­their duties, sins, sorrows, judgments,and hopes. But it also deals with na­tions. The mission and destiny of oneparticular nation is a chief theme ofScripture; but much is said also of therise and fall of contemporary nations.

The most obvious fact of history isthat nations rise and fall and disap­pear. The Bible makes plain to us thereason for the fall of empires. Thereis a moral law at work among nationsfor nations are made of men. "What­soever a man soweth, that shall he alsoreap"; and whatsoever a nation sow­eth, that also shall it reap.

In its annual report on U.S. crime,the F.B.I. reported that the nation'scrime rate rocketed 48 percent in thepast six years, with violent crime soar-

As a long-time mem­ber of his denomination's Committeeon Christian Education he saw theimportance of the over-all need forprinted materials, from evangelistictracts to a Sunday school curriculum.He was one of the members of thehard-working committee that producedthe church's Trinity Hymnal.

Convinced of the cause of theOrthodox Presbyterian Church, hefought liberalism-by whatever name-with a cutting sword, but withoutany personal animosity or anything butsadness over the deplorable situationin the ecclesiastical world that re­quired such a joining of battle forthe sake of the truth. So far as he wasconcerned, the Reformed Faith orCalvinism was simply the system setforth in Scripture. He found its mosteloquent and consistent expression inthe Westminster Confession and sawno reason to compromise with any­thing less Biblical.

Defender of the FaithOne of Dr. Young's final efforts,

in the week prior to his death, wasto testify at some length at a civilcourt trial in Seattle in behalf of acongregation that had renounced theUnited Presbyterian Church in opposi­tion to the Confession of 1967. Hedefended their contention that thisconfessional change is so substantialas to amount to a forsaking of truePresbyterianism, and that they there­fore had every right to retain theirproperty when they left their formerdenomination in order to maintaintheir Christian integrity and witness.

We have not forgotten ProfessorYoung as a scholar of Scripture's deeptreasure. This part of his career asprofessor of Old Testament and fa­culty member in Westminster Theo­logical Seminary since 1936 is so wellknown and recognized, however, thatwe mention it last only because hisministry of friendship and preachingand labor as presbyter may not be sowidely appreciated. President Clowneywrote fittingly of "the commentary ofhis life for Christ."

Elsewhere in these pages is an ac­count of his scholarly contributions asa teacher, lecturer, and writer. Suffice

ing 11 percent last year alone. Since1960, while the nation grew nine per­cent, the volume of crime rose 62percent.

The American home is still the basisof our social order, and the nationwill never be any stronger than itshomes. The rising youth problem incrime stems directly from the home.There is no character-building agencythat can take the place of a goodhome.

The tragedy of crime in Americaalso has a direct connection with thedecline in true religion. There is a nec­essary connection between crime andthe decline of faith and religious prac­tice. When men do not know Godor his justice, they do not respect hislaws. The way to make America safefrom crime, the way to make herpeople moral, is to return to the reli­gion of the Bible.

The moral law which runs throughhistory applies to the U.S. as well asto other nations. Why did other na­tions die? The best answer is theWord of God spoken of Nineveh: "Iwill dig thy grave because thou artvile." Babylon fell while her kingBelshazzar and his nobles were in themidst of a drunken debauch. Then itwas that the king saw the handwritingon the wall: "Thou art weighed inthe balances and found wanting." Themoral law first weighs, and thenjudges and destroys.

"Wherever the carcass is," saidChrist, "there will the eagles be gath­ered together." And whenever a na­tion is sufficiently ripe for divinejudgment, then appear the eagles ofjudgment and destruction. The foun­dations are being destroyed. What willthe righteous do?

Let us arise and build the walls ofJerusalem and call upon the name ofthe Lord. "Be watchful and strengthenthe things which remain, that areready to die" (Rev. 3:2).

I was very disturbed after reading theletter of Mr. Churchill to the

President (December issue). My con­cern is both with its immediate con­tent and, more important, the generaltrend of evangelical Christians todayas implicated in the letter. This trendis most clearly illustrated by themethod of attack on "churchly liberal-

ism which has discarded the Scripturesas the very Word of God and has de­cided to get involved."

Unfortunately, many liberal churcheshave abandoned the Word of God andhave made social pronouncements be­yond the Biblical realm. But evangel­ical Christians fail to learn and merelydiscard the issues as "liberal." Whymust we always be on the defensive,critical of those who "are getting in­volved," ignoring the issues and theworld around us?

Instead of wasting our time onmeaningless shortsighted criticism letus be concerned with the perfectionof our own witness. Where is thedesperately needed Christian dialogueon economics, on foreign policy, oncivil rights? The tragedy of Christiananswers for directly Christian issuesand secular answers for everydayproblems demands correction. Weshould be ashamed to see liberalscloser to a Christian dialogue than weare.

It is the responsibility of everyChristian citizen to get involved in aChristian way. Now it is certainly notthe role of the church to make directpronouncements on social issues. It isthe role of the church to teach itsmembers how to deal with these is­sues at the principle-level. Nearly allthese matters can be reduced to ethicalquestions. The Bible deals with thesevery clearly. Perhaps the church willnot give us the answer on the Vietnamwar, but it must prepare us to dealwith this conflict in a Christian way.

I have to answer for my involve­ment in the Vietnam war before theLord Jesus Christ - as do we all.Will the church assist us in formulat­ing a Christian answer?

Guidance

A Christian naturally asks about theguidance of God through the

Holy Spirit. That is not only becausehe must at every moment be consciousof his entire dependence upon hisCreator, but the Creator himself bringsthe true believer, who is his child,into situations where he is forcefullyreminded of his own insufficiency andof his complete dependence upon di­vine providence and grace.

At times of great decision when heis faced, for example, with the de­cisions of marriage or the choice of aprofession or when he is placed ingrave situations, the believer would becallous and indifferent to his callingas a Christian if he were not to askabout the guidance of God, whose eyeruns to and fro over the entire earth,to whom nothing is hid, and who haspromised to uphold and to direct allthose who trust in him. It is he whohas promised to guide his church intoall truth. He will certainly not remainaloof from his own in their need.Fundamental Principles

The Scriptures teach that man wascreated in the image of God. Amongother things this means that we cannotfirst start with man and then considerhim in his relationship to God. Rather,at every point man is completely de­p~ndent upon his Creator. AlthoughhIS acts have real significance, al­though there is in him a personalidentity, he was nevertheless from theoutset completely taken up in his God­relationship.

From his first act of consciousnesshe was surrounded by the revelationof God. No part of this environment,whether external or internal, failedto speak to him of his Creator. Bothwhat was within and what was out­side spoke to him of the presence ofGod. In the original state of man, be­fore the advent of sin, all of his actswere performed with the awarenessthat he was moment by moment de­pendent on God and was guided byhim.

In this situation his spontaneousreaction was a full and complete obedi­ence, a natural response to the centralcommandment to love God with allhis heart. He was involved in a su­premely personal relationship, whichengaged all of his faculties, includingthe deepest levels of his powers ofdiscernment.

At the heart of the religion of theBible is this personal relationship offellowship and communion of man,the covenant head of creation, with thesovereign Creator God.

Even the Old Covenant at its heartwas a covenant of grace. Its promisewas that man, in spite of his dread­ful fall into sin, will again be thechild of God. It is the inner, spiritualcharacter of the covenant in the OldTestament that in all its provisions itpoints to the reestablishment of thedeepest religious bond and fellowshipbetween man and God (Gen. 17: 7) .

It was this fellowship of the deepestpersonal character that pervaded alldivine-human relationships. Even thelaws of God could not be thought ofas being simply outward and formal.They were at bottom the expressionof God's sovereign will as he disclosedto man the way of fellowship withhim (Ex. 19:5,6). His Word touchesthe deepest level of human existenceand calls to personal fellowship of themost intimate nature.

Man is, therefore, always dependentupon the guidance of God. The Chris­tian must sense that in every one ofhis .acts and even in his deepest selfhe IS completely dependent upon hisCreator and Sustainer, in whom helives, and moves, and has his being.He is completely dependent upon thegrace which is offered to him inJesus Christ.The Ways of Guidance

Because of the all-pervasiveness ofGod's presence in his revelation, theChristian must look everywhere forguidance. Guidance is not restricted tothis or that act of God; it is not ap­prehended by this or that faculty inman. All things are ultimately the ex­pression of God's counsel. Everythingis included in his providence. At thevery heart of his existence man is de­pendent upon this guidance, of whichhe should be aware at every point.

Nevertheless, it is possible to dis­tinguish between God's guidance in amore general and in a more particularway.

This is part 1 of a IIpreliminary re­port on guidance" presented at the34th OP Assembly by a committeewhich is studying that doctrine. It isprinted here as deserving of widerreading.

God created man, and concurrentlyhe interpreted man to himself. He setman in an environment which spokeof God in its every part. AlthoughGod spoke with man in words, hisguidance was also present in the re­sponse that man gave to the revelationwithin himself and in his environmentas his powers of judgment matured.

God guides by his Word. He alsoguides by the refinement of the judg­ment, the wisdom, which man de­velops in his involvement with thatWord. If we speak of guidance, there­fore, we may not restrict its meaning.God guides us with his Word. Healso guides us in the use of our powersof judgment and discernment whichcome with the increase of wisdom.

GUIDANCE THROUGH THE WORD

Of basic importance for our under­standing of God's use of his writ­

ten Word is the fact that it is hissufficient revelation of his will to us.As the Westminster Confession sum­marizes the matter, "the whole coun­sel of God, concerning all things nec­essary for his own glory, man's sal­vation, faith, and life, is either ex­pressly set down in Scripture, or bygood and necessary consequence maybe deduced from Scripture."

Sufficiency of ScripturesConsider the comment that Paul

made to Timothy in the second letterwhich he wrote to him (2 Tim. 3:15­17). After noting the inspiration andusefulness of the Scriptures, Paul thengoes on to point out the completenessof the help which they offer to theman of God. It is through the teach­ing, reproof, correction and trainingof these writings that Timothy mayexpect to be complete, equipped forevery good work. The whole effect ofPaul's language here is to impress onewith the fact that the Scriptures fur­nish the believer with guidance forevery possible good work. When westop to think that Paul was saying thisin regard to the Old Testament Scrip­tures, can there be any reason to doubtthat this is even more true of thecompleted Word of God, containingalso the New Testament?

Consider also the answer that Christgave to his tempter in the wilderness.In the situation in which he foundhimself he was faced with a· decision.What should he do? His answer isthat here, too, he will live by theWord of God. This harks back to theday when Israel was about to enter

their land and Moses told them thatthey must remember that man doesnot live by bread alone, but by every­thing that comes from the mouth ofGod. Careful consideration of this in­cident shows the use that Jesus madeof the Old Testament Scriptures forguidance in a practical situation. Hisprinciple was that he would go bywhat God had written (Mt. 4:4 andDt. 8:3).

Focus in ChristWhen we think of the completed

revelation, the Old and New Testa­ments, we must look at them in theperspective of Hebrews 1 :1,2. Thewhole process of revelation is sketchedhere for us. It comes to climax andfinality in God's Son, the Heir of alland the Creator of the age. He hasalso finished the process of revelation,for it says that he has spoken in theSon. In Jesus Christ, then, as he isoffered to us in the gospel, declaredfirst by Christ and then by those whoheard him (Heb. 2:3), we have allthe revealed guidance that God hasdesigned to give us.

This guidance is given in writtenform where it may be studied andlearned, in the words which the HolySpirit teaches (1 Cor. 2:13). By speak­ing of it as revealed guidance we dis­tinguish this from the providentialcontrol of God over human lives. Thisprovidential leading cannot be per­ceived before it comes to pass in day­to-day events and is not to be con­sidered as a guide to conduct.

It would seem clear then that toseek for guidance elsewhere, or alongside of the Scriptures, would be tofail to heed the Scriptures themselvesas the sufficient guide to God's will.For instance, to seek it in signs orother forms of special guidance wouldbe to regress in the perspective ofGod's developing revelation from theday of his final revelation in Christto the time of the "many and variousways God spoke of old to our fathersby the prophets."

Study of the WordAs the sufficient guide the Bible

tells us what God's will is, or whatwe are to do to please him. Paul,in writing to the saints in Rome,speaks of knowing God's will throughthe instruction (catechesis) of the Law(2 :18). This Law is the embodimentof knowledge and truth (v. 20). Itis interesting to reflect upon themethod of learning that is implied in

the verb Paul uses in verse eighteen.He says that they had been catechized.In other words, they had simply heardthe law read in synagogue services andby hearing memorized. This was theway they would know God's will. Wemight comment in this connection thatwe today not only have God's com­pleted revelation, but we also haveit readily available for study and ref­erence when we need to know God'swill.

When we return to 2 Timothy 3: 16,we notice the ways in which the God­breathed Word informs us of God'swill. There are four words listed:teaching, reproof, correction and train­ing. The truth is taught. Error is re­buked, a standard is given for makingcorrections. Training is given to thechild of God, day by day, in the prac­tice of righteousness. All this is done,as we have noted, so that this man ofGod might be equipped to do God'swill, i.e., every good work.

At least two of these words implya process of learning. The words forteaching and training also imply con­tinued activity on the part of a teacher(God) and a learner (the man ofGod). This leads us to speak of thenecessity of regular systematic Biblestudy. Catechesis, teaching, training­all underline the need for diligentsustained effort if one is to knowGod's will. The Scriptures must hemastered. These words also imply, in­deed promise the sustained diligentefforts of the Holy Spirit in openingour minds to understand the Word.

"The Will of God"The Scriptures use the phrase "the

will of God" in more than one way.Theologians often distinguish the willof God as his decrees by which hemakes everything come to pass, fromthe revelation of his desires and com­mands which forms the precepts bywhich men are to live. Thus we mayspeak of the decretive and preceptivewill of God. When we note the useof the phrase in the letter to theColossians we can see this. The matteris mentioned in 1:1; 1:9 and 4:12.In the latter two instances, there isprayer that the Christians might knowand perform the will of God. Thisprimarily has to do with the preceptsof God, revealed in his Word. Con­formity to the preceptive will, ofcourse, leads to the purpose of Godbeing fulfilled, namely conformity toChrist for the redeemed (Romans8:28).

In 1: 1, again we have a combinedsense of the concept. Paul was ap­pointed to be an apostle. God decreedit. He also revealed it to Paul ver­bally (Acts 9: 15). Arndt and Ging­rich have summarized this very well intheir Greek-English Lexicon (p. 354)as "what one wishes to bring aboutby the activity of others, to whom oneassigns a task." The assigning of tasksis done today through the writtenWord.

Hanover Park ErectsNew Place of Worship

After meeting in the fieldhouse inAhlstrand Park for five years, the

people of Grace Chapel in HanoverPark, Illinois are now holding servicesin their own building on BarringtonRoad, a major thoroughfare. The menof the congregation did the workthemselves under the able direction ofMr. H. Wickland, a member and Sun­day school teacher at the chapel. Planswere drawn by a member of BethelChurch of Wheaton.

The chapel work began in 1962under the auspices of the session ofBethel Church, whose pastor is theRev. Francis Breisch, and five familiesin Hanover Park soon became inter­ested. Mr. Donald Duff assisted inthe early and sometimes discouragingdays and the faithful nucleus persistedin carrying on with the encouragementof the Home Missions Committee ofthe Presbytery of Wisconsin. Pastor ofthe Grace Chapel flock is the Rev.James L. Bosgraf.

GRACE CHAPEL VOLUNTEERS AT WORKThe photos were taken last fall during construction of anaddition to the parsonage at 6951 Hanover Street, at Bar­rington Road. The large room, where the garage used to be,will seat 80 people for Grace Chapel services. A white steeplewill call attention to the building as a place where the gospelis proclaimed. Volunteers put in many days of work in tes­timony to their determination to establish a witness for JesusChrist in Hanover Park.

and Cedar Grove churches have as­sisted in Hanover Park in recent sum­mers with Vacation Bible School andenrollments have exceeded 200. Regu­lar attendance in the six classes of theSunday school runs in the fifties andnew families are being reached in thisway. It is hoped that the more satis­factory place of meeting, which in­cludes space in the lower level of theadjoining parsonage, will help to at­tract visitors.

Born in Chicago, Mr. Bosgraf grewup in Wheaton, where he attendedcollege. After graduating from GordonDivinity School he accepted the callof Bethel Church to work in HanoverPark and took up the task in the fallof 1966. He was ordained in March1967. His wife, Judy, a native NewEnglander, is a nurse. The Bosgrafshave two children: Kimberly Anne, ayear and a half old, and Scott Alan,two months old when the picture wastaken.

Pre -Assembly Conferencesin Willow GroveI n fulfillment of plans made at

last year's Assembly a conferenceon missions, church extension, andChristian education has been plannedfor May 10, 11, and 13 prior to the35th OPC General Assembly whichbegins on the 14th. The conference,which is jointly sponsored by the OPCand the Reformed Presbyterian Church,Evangelical Synod, will convene atCalvary RP Church of Willow Grove,Pa. The Assembly is in Westfield,New Jersey.

The purpose is to provide the agen­cies of the two denominations with theopportunity of setting forth their goalsin the light of Biblical principles. It

Pastor Robert Atwell and theSession are the Committee on Arrange­ments appointed at the 1967 Assembly.

La Mirada, Calif. - A new ap­proach to missions in the Sundayschool was introduced in CalvaryChurch with the new year. Instead ofa monthly missionary Sunday pro­gram, missions will be presented inthe nine classes from 4th gradethrough adult once every month. Gear­ing their teaching to each age level,selected "missions teachers" will makea ten-minute presentation at the be­ginning or end of the class period.All the fields will be covered in eachclass, and specific prayer requestsgiven for the month. An occasionalmissions quiz in the opening periodkeeps the pupils on their "listeningears."

Four carloads from Calvary Churchwelcomed the Hunts from Korea asthey arrived at the Los Angeles Air­port. Troy, Alabama - On January 13Winifred Armour Clelland went hometo be with her Lord after many yearsof illness and patient suffering. Un­able to walk since September, she hadbeen confined to her bed the last twomonths. She was the wife of the Rev.John Clelland, charter minister andlong-time pastor of Orthodox Presby­terian churches in Wilmington, Dela­ware and Valdosta, Georgia. The Rev.Messrs. Donald Graham, Adrian De­Young and LeRoy Oliver took partin the funeral service.

Carson, No. Dak, - After exami­nation by the Presbytery of the Da­kotas the Rev. Jack Peterson was in­stalled on February 8 as pastor of thecongregations in Leith, Lark, and Car­son. At the same meeting of the Pres­bytery on January 30 in Hamill, So.Dak., licentiate Larry Conard com­pleted his parts of trial for ordina­tion, planned in conjunction with thespring meeting in Colorado. Mr.Conard is pastor-elect of Park HillChurch, Denver.

Omaha, Nebr. - Pastor ReginaldVoorhees graciously reports that theOmaha Sunday school (losers in anautumn attendance contest) enter­tained the winners from Faith andPioneer Sunday schools at a social eve-

ning 10 mid-January. Eight carloadswith 45 victors made the trip fromLincoln and were welcomed by 43losers in Omaha and SuperintendentHair. Devotions, musical saw solos byMr. Karasek, chalk talks by MissSchackneis, games and refreshments,all "helped to draw the three Sundayschools together in closer OPC con­sciousness."

Greenville, Mich. - The nearbySpencer Mills (or is it Spencer'sMill?) Church was formally welcomedon January 21 as the first congregationof the Orthodox Presbyterian Churchin Michigan. The Rev. George Mar­ston acted on behalf of the Presbyteryof Wisconsin. For a year and a halfthe work has been under the over­sight of the Presbytery's Church Ex­tension Committee consisting of theRev. Messrs. Fikkert and Stanton to­gether with Elder Ralph Voskuil, whois treasurer of the committee.

At the same service Mr. Marstonordained and installed as eldersMessrs. Clarence J. Worst, Chester E.Hunter, and Calvin K. Cummings, Jr.Prayers are requested throughout thechurch for this new congregation andtheir need of a pastor.

Gladstone, Ore. - As this branchmission of First Church, Portlandnears its first year of regular services,it is encouraged by increasing attend­ance with recent highs in the fifties.A committee of the Session made upof Elders Schmurr, Huber, and Rob­bins is assisting the work. The Rev.Alan Wyatt, supporting himself witha super-market job and also studyingat Western Evangelical Seminary,serves as supply pastor. He preachestwice, conducts a communicant course,and finds time for some pastoralcalling.

The communicant members (18 asof December) have their membershipin First Church pending the formationof a separate congregation. The groupis purchasing a two-and-one-half acresite on the outskirts of Gladstone.
