16 RECRUITMENT. . THE CHALLENGE OF RECRUITMENT While we have reached the end of this Pennant Season, the club still have some great events programmed in the coming months and urges everyone to check our Programme Booklet and to continue to play bowls, if time permits, but equally we should not stop looking for new mem- bers to join our friendly club here at Heatherdale. It is important that we all try to find a new member(s) from somewhere in our local community to secure the future of our club. If you have any ideas which you feel that would help, or the club should try, in attracting new members, young or old, open up and let a committee member know as soon as possible. Every member can assist in this important challenge and we should not be solely reliant on the recruitment committee to have all of the ideas. Lawn Bowls as we all know is truly a great sport and is a sport for life, (and that some members play lawn bowls into their 90’s). It is very much a game of skill, and stepping out on the green to play will give great enjoyment as well as improve your concentration and thinking so it should not be hard to promote the sport to others. Membership forms are available from just outside the general office or, a form can be down loaded if you have a computer from our new website. You may not realise that we have a new web-site, but we do trust that it will help you to keep up-to-date with what is happening around the bowling club. Lets hope that we can secure some new members ( both beginners or experienced bowlers ) before the start of next Pennant Season ? Another pennant season is over and we are fast approaching Annual General Meetings. With this in mind its time for you to consider standing for one of the many positions. Our club will be successful if members get involved and not leave it to a handful of people. We are saddened by the passing of Ken Corfe, who had not been around the club for some time as he had been ill. Deepest Sympathy to the family. Next season will see the introduction of purple pants and shorts as our uniform. We will provide details in the very near future As you are aware we had a very hot summer and as a result a few complaints from members about per-sonnel hygiene of some of our members. Please consider others. LePine, a long term sponsor, will be running an information session on prepaid funerals on the 20th March at 3.30 prior to happy hour, They will provide afternoon tea and I strongly urge you to come along. More details are in 'Sponsor Happening' on page 12 and 13. Thankyou again to the Monday morning crew for maintaining our grounds in such great condition and re-member they are always looking for new volunteers. I hope all our members that are in ill health at the moment have a speedy recovery and are back at the club soon Alan Moore

BOARD OF MANAGEMENT

With the 2013 – 2014 Pennant Season at an end it is time to look towards the Recreation Club A.G.M. where members can nominate for Office Bearers and Committee Positions. The Recreation Club Management Committee AGM will be held on Wednesday 14th May 2014 at 7.30pm in the Clubrooms. Please give some thought to standing for committee positions to help run the club. All positions in the Recreation Club (Management Committee) and the Bowls Division become vacant at the end of each year and any member of the club can nominate for any position. Heatherdale is a great club with many members who have skills to help keep the club vibrant and their input adds to the benefit of all members. If you feel you have something to give that will help to maintain this great club, please give some thought to nominate for some position. Nomination forms will be placed on the notice board during the next few weeks for interested members to fill out with their selected positions. Don’t be afraid to nomi-

An old man lay sprawled across three entire seats in the theatre. When the usher came by and noticed this, he whispered to the old man, "Sorry sir, but you're only allowed one seat." The old man just groaned but didn't budge. The usher became more impatient. "Sir, if you don't get up from there I'm going to have to call the manager" Once again, the old man just groaned. The usher marched briskly back up the aisle, and in a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the dishevelled man, but with no success. Finally they summoned the police. The officer surveyed the situation briefly then asked, "All right buddy what's your name?" "Fred," the old man moaned. "Where ya from, Fred?" asked the police officer. With terrible pain in his voice, and without moving a muscle, Fred replied, "The balcony."

We at Heatherdale are fortunate to have members who give their time voluntarily to help in the running of the club. This includes members who have held positions on the club committees, those who fulfill the various roster commitments, those who help to maintain Greens, Grounds and Buildings work on the Trad-ing Table, the Almoners, and the many other times when volunteers are needed. My thanks go to them all. At the present time our current membership is as follows:-

It is with a note of sadness that I report the passing of member Kenneth Corfe. Ken joined the club on 26th October 2006 and enjoyed his bowling saying he should have joined earlier. He played in the Eastern Dis-tricts Roamers Association Saturday competition at the beginning of the 2007 - 08 season and progressed to the Saturday Pennant competition later that season. He played his last pennant game on 6th November 2013. Ken passed away on Saturday 22nd February 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Our sincere con-dolences go out to his family and stepson Richard Gee. The Whitehorse Council have given the go ahead to install a light outside the West entrance gate. Work is expected to begin early March 2014. The Air conditioning units have been serviced and are now working perfectly. If you see any thing around the club that requires attention other than the routine work that is carried out by the Monday Maintenance Group or you think would enhance the club in any way please raise it with any members of the Club Management Board. On behalf of the Board of Management of the club I would like to congratulate Bruce Varcoe on reaching the ripe old age of 90 years on the 9th March 2014. Have a Happy Birthday Bruce and may you have many more. Congratulations to the members who have taken the time to attend and pass Coaching Courses Umpire Courses and Measurers Courses. Congratulations to the winners of the club championship games played so far and to the members who have participated in the Region championship games. Congratulations and good luck to John Benson who will be playing in the State Champions events. Good Bowling for the rest of the season and to all members who are not well a speedy return to good health and we hope to see you at the club very soon. Arthur Coghlan. CEO HRBC

Club uniform for pennant Following the introduction of the club shirt it was always on the agenda to wait for a period before going ahead with coloured trousers. Your bowls committee was encouraged recently to research the next step in this process In so doing we approached Henselite and subse-quently were given samples of trousers, shorts and for the ladies ¾ pants. The notices were put out to members and it certainly caused discussion. The prices from Henselite vary due to the quantity ordered, but the average for a first order would be around $60 for the trouser, as we would anticipate bulk ordering. Since we put out the notice it has come to our attention that it may be possible to buy our preferred colour over the counter. The price here is very similar. We now have samples of the colour and sizes in hand, although the men’s samples colour still has to be checked. There is still a decision to be made as to which supplier we use, it is not fait accompli. We are listening to the members and will make a decision based on majority, We are yet to register the colour with BV however we anticipate an order being ready to send in time for the next pennant season. As from Thursday 27th February, samples will be available for you to see and try on each Thursday from 5.15pm for the next three weeks. The coloured pants will be our Pennant uniform, you will still get wear out of your newly pur-chased whites for social, (which is an argument we are hearing) The committees at Heather-dale are working for the benefit of members and are open to constructive suggestions. .The Trading Table is going along very nicely. Much of our success is due to the people in our club who donate goods to us. It broadens the range of what we can offer. One small request. I am needing ribbon. A variety of colours and quite short lengths are usable. Any bits you have spare would be appreciated. At the moment we have a good range of sweets available. This time it includes the ever popu-lar honeycomb so many of you have requested. Our sweets are sold at a cheaper price than the shops ,so when you're at the club ,remember to buy your favorite spoils while you're there. Good bowling everyone From Linda At The Table.

Well here we are at the end of another pennant season, how fast eighteen rounds go by! No time to practice. No time to improve my game. No time to get advice on what I'm doing wrong. I say wrong because we have a possible 2/5 Midweek 5/6 Saturday teams being relegated (first time in Heatherdale history) there is not much going right. Let's blame change in uniform. Let's blame women playing Saturday pennant. Let's blame women running the club. Let's blame Selection. Well as President I say let's blame ourselves! I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but these are the facts. After a conversation recently I have finally realized what the problem with me is. My expectations are too high, I'm told we are a social club. Being part of a club means accepting ALL young, old, foundation, new, men, women, social and competitive. We should be accommodating all. This takes hard work by VOLUNTEERS. As my term nears it's end I urge particularly the men in this club who have constantly hounded me over many trivial matters or Bowls Vic rules and regulations of which I have no control. Use the next two months to dig deep, research the changes Bowls Vic have put in place and offer your services to our club at the AGM. Congratulations to all our Club Champions competing in Zone Champion of Champions John Benson did well to reach the Semi Final, all represented our club well. Also well done to Gail Loidl, Carol, Marion Stacker and Margaret Poile qualifying in the Australian Open (also a first for Heatherdale). Still lots so social events on the calendar and we look forward to these events being well attended. Carol. Protopapas, Bowls President

A young man and a priest are playing together. At a short par-3 the priest asks, "What are you going to use on this hole, my son?"

The young man says, "An 8-iron, father. How about you?" The priest says, "I'm going to hit a soft seven and pray."

The young man hits his 8-iron and puts the ball on the green. The priest tops his 7-iron and dribbles the ball out a few yards. The young man says, "I don't know about

you, father, but in my church, when we pray, we keep our head down."

As I write this report we have only one week of “home and away” pennant to play and we are facing a desperate situation if finals performances are the goal - and indeed they are (or were). By the time this report is published we will know if Side four have reached their goal of finals participation but the scenario itself is worth reporting. With three weeks to go side 4 looked healthy, but then the weather intervened and the cancelled round (round 16), robbed us of an expected minimum of fourteen or sixteen points – we shared a mere 9 points with all other clubs. Leading in to this final round, Healesville (163 points), Heatherdale (156 points) and Heathmont (155 points) are all vying for that coveted fourth place on the ladder. It comes down to this, Hea-therdale 4 (5th) meet Mooroolbark 4 (3rd) at Heatherdale in a “shoot out”. The maximum number of 18 points would ensure us a place in the finals and even at the expense of Mooroolbark (169 points). Anything less would depend upon how both Healesville and Heathmont fare in their re-spective matches. From early in the season when relative positions started taking shape and side four looked like the most likely prospect, we, the selectors, gave those members in that side every opportunity to reach their goal by maintaining stability of players, at times to the detriment of other sides. We did receive some criticism for the choice we made but nevertheless, it matters not what course we adopted we would not be devoid of our critics. Alas, all of the other sides are facing relegation and what more can be said than this is just a sorry, sorry, situation. Why? what went wrong? or what caused this situation to be so? are the questions being asked by many members. There is not one simple answer. Perhaps the ageing club population and/or ineffective recruitment and/or declining numbers and/or insufficient members regularly practicing and/or other unforeseen factors all play a part in this. Whatever, it is an undeniable fact. The numbers leaving the pennant bowls scene in this Club far outweigh the numbers entering and this is now having a telling effect on the overall. On a positive note, relegation in the circumstances as I have just explained, inevitable as it might be, can have its uses. Lower grades provides for the possibility of more winning teams and more winners could provide more outside interest and greater enthusiasm from within. Let's face it, everybody loves a winner no matter what the grade or standard of play. Happy bowling Mac Wells Saturday Selectors

After our season’s last game on 11th February, none of the five sides managed to reach the finals. The results do not, in any way, reflect on the players, but rather on the very strongly structured sides from other clubs. Many of our games were lost by a very small margin and that, of course, means less points in the end result. During the last half of the season, we had many players drop out – for a variety of reasons – and that meant the regular use of emergencies, and we thank them for their cooperation in this regard. A big THANK YOU to each and every player who has given their best for Heatherdale this season. Many players enjoyed the Drills and Skills mornings which Robert Davis organised, and although the weather seemed very unkind on Thursday mornings for a while, some good practice and information morn-ings were very successful, and appreciated by those who attended. Now is the time to consider if you will be playing Midweek Pennant next Season. Please put your name down on the sheet which is on the wall in the midweek bowls area, indicating whether you prefer Women Only, Open, Permanent or Emergency. This is helpful for the bowls division when they have to decide on what Teams to enter. The Championship events which are looked after by midweek selectors are being played and some results are already finalised. LADIES SINGLES: Winner – Margaret Poile Runner Up – Carol Klop LADIES PAIRS: Winners – Carol Protopapas/Marion Stacker Runners Up – Val Uhd/Fiona McNamara LADIES 100 UP: Is in progress up to the second round. MIXED FOURS: Cancelled due to lack of entries. MIXED NOVICE SINGLES: 1st round starts on or before Sunday 16th March. Congratulations to all finalists, and good luck to those who still have games to play. In conclusion, I would like to thank my fellow selectors – John Benson, Robert Davis, Lesley Furlong, and Val Uhd for their continued support of the selection committee, and to the pennant and championship games under our control. I have enjoyed their company and thank them for their help in making positive decisions for our club each week. Phyl Dickens, Midweek Pennant

Doug Smith is on his deathbed, knows the end is near. His nurse, his wife, his daughter and 2 sons, are with him. So, he says to them:

"Bernie, I want you to take the Mayfair houses. "Sybil, take the apartments over in Pall Mall. Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in City Centre. Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the Thames."

The nurse is just blown away by all this, and as Doug slips away, she says,

"Mrs. Smith, your husband must have been such a hard-working man to have ac-cumulated all this property".

Sarah replies, "Property? ...... He has a paper round!”

We have come to the end of another season which has seen us with some unwell members, and unfortunately members or partners passing away. At present Judy Dolan and Bev Cox are still on the unwell list ,Bruce Varcoe is still struggling, in and out of Hospital during 2013/2014. We have sent out 13 get well cards and 5 Sympathy cards on behalf of the Club. I hope next season everyone enjoys good health and happy times. Meryl Ellwa

Three dead bodies turn up at the mortuary all with very big smiles on their

Faces. The coroner calls the police to tell them what has happened.

'First body: Pierre Dubois, Frenchman, 60, died of heart failure while making love to his 20-year old mistress. Hence the enormous smile,Inspector', says the Coroner.

'Second body: Hamish Campbell, Scotsman, 25, won £50,000 on the lottery,

Spent it all on whisky. Died of alcohol poisoning, hence the smile.'

The Inspector asked, 'What about the third body?'

'Ah,' says the coroner, 'this is the most unusual one. Paddy Murphy, Irish, 30, struck by light-ning.'

'Why is he smiling then?' inquires the Inspector.

'He thought he was having his picture taken
