THE ROOM IS LONG, RESEMBLING A HALLWAY. An electric light illuminates the peaceful face of MARK(50), who is sleeping.

Video cameras move along the wall. High-tech TV monitors have been placed throughout the room-hallway. On one of the monitors there are scenes from a PARK - beautiful trees, greenery, flowers.

JOHN SMITH (V.O)I want you to remember everything! Remember it all! Wrack your brain - every little corner of it.

A pleasant and soothing smile appears on Mark's sleeping face.

JOHN SMITH(V.O)I want you to concentrate. You have only 60 minutes. I repeat, only 60 minutes. After that you will die. Your death will be agonizing.

Mark's face becomes anxious. The light from the electric fixture begins to pulse as it falls on his face from above.

JOHN SMITH(V.O) (cont'd)Think. Your skull, shattered, after falling from a great height. Pain. Blood dripping from your eyes.

Mark doesn't open his eyes, but emotions of acute pain and fear play upon his face. On one of the monitor screens a picture of a beautiful park is punctuated by the squeal of rats.

JOHN SMITH(V.O) (cont'd)If you don't die from the fall, you will meet with our animal experiments... Rat-roaches.. Every part of your body will by bitten and chewed by creatures mad with hunger. Think. You have only 60 minutes.

Indescribable fear distorts Mark's face. A red button is lit on the ceiling. For a brief moment a MONSTER - A CROSS BETWEEN A COCKROACH AND A RAT appears on the TV screen.

Little by little Mark comes to, but everything is still blurry before his eyes. He tries to focus, and looks around, but doesn't comprehend what is happening.

  • Mark sits in a chair. He turns his head first in one direction and then another. The tattered chair on which Mark sits moves with a screech along one rail.

Mark now notices that his hands are chained to the arms of the chair. In front of the chair there is a distance of about 300 feet to the opening of an elevator shaft. A blinding electric light glares...

The ELECTRIC WALL CLOCK shows there are 59 minutes and 32 seconds remaining.

    MARKWhere am I?

    JOHN(V.O)You are here and now....

MARKWhy did you tie me up? What is going on??!

JOHN(V.O)Really, you need to concentrate and remember everything. You don't have much time left.

    MARKRemember what?!!!!

JOHN(V.O)Who you are and where you're from!

MARK thinks, rolling his eyes foolishly. Black balloons take shape in his memory. The balloons break ...

    MARKin a husky voice)(

    I don't remember anything. I don't know who I am.

    JOHN(V.O)(yelling)

    Your name!!

    MARKI don't know!!!

JOHN(V.O)Then officially I'll call you - Mister Who Doesn't Remember... And by the way, I'm John Smith.

    2.

  • MARKWhat do you need from me???!!

JOHN(V.O)Hey, Mister Who Doesn't Remember - let's agree on one thing. I'm the one who gets to ask the questions!

With a screeching noise of metal against metal, the chair continues moving slowly forward.

For a fleeting moment the RAT-ROACH appears on the TV screen. It squeals.

JOHN(V.O) (cont'd)You must focus every fiber of your rotten brain and remember what unhappiness waits for you down below.

A flash of light is emitted by the TV ...

Mark tries to free his hands, but they are too tightly bound...

Mark's eyes roll back in his head.

    MARK'S VISION

    MARK(V.O)Who am I?

JOHN (V.O)Yes, who are you? In your life have you ever asked the question 'who am I'?

MARK(V.O)I am no one, I am a shadow...

    END OF MARK'S DREAM

The clock-face shows 55 minutes remaining.
