“The Good Times”

By Fr. Ed Kusmierczyk

“Hey!” How many of you remember the song, “Sentimental Journey”? Because if you do, you are probably part of what has been called, “The Greatest Generation”. Or not too far from it. So if you would please close your eyes for a moment I want you to drift back in your mind’s eye and visualize a warm summers evening. You are about to board the ship “Canadiana” at lower Main street near the lower end of Main Street near what used to be the old Memorial Auditorium building. There’s excitement in the air and kids and families are waiting patiently to board the open air two level ship. On the back of the ship is a huge paddle wheel similar to those on the Mississippi River boats. And on the top deck near the Captain’s bridge are two large black smoke stacks. The lower and upper decks have bench row seats. They were made from a kind of very stiff and hard woven bamboo. There was also music that came from a large juke box which had all kinds of colored lights on it. The trip from Buffalo across Lake Erie to Canada was probably about ¾ to 1hour. There was nothing like feeling the cool breeze as we traveled thru the sometimes choppy waters of Lake Erie. Then we would see the lights from the Canadian shoreline and the pier for the ship to dock at. Directly ahead of us was the famous roller coaster ride, “The Comet”. As we approached the dock you could see and hear the passengers as they screamed with their arms out stretched to the heavens. The cars clanged and rattled as they whizzed around the curves, hills and dips at what seemed to be break neck speed. My first thought was, “I am not going to ride that thing”. But once I got into the park it was time to build up courage for a ride on the “Comet”.

Well aside from the thrill rides there was the infamous Magic Carpet Ride. A place that took you through a maze of different attractions. Like the house of mirrors where you would stand in front of different mirrors that would make you look fat, thin, tall or short. And then you would come out of the building and sit down on a carpet that moved across rollers as though you where floating in the clouds. There were other games, rides, food and especially cotton candy, apple suckers and taffy. There is a lot more to remember, but perhaps this little taste of the past will bring back some fond memories of sweet smells and tastes for you. This was my Crystal Beach Experience and “The Good Times”.

Friday Night the BBC Band gave of themselves to offer a fantastic convert to benefit the Lapp Family. Everyone who attended had a great time and as you can see from the pictures on the next few pages, Brian, Nathan and Kiersten enjoyed themselves as well. Nearly $8,000 was raised from the concert alone, but the fact that the triplets enjoyed themselves was really what made it worthwhile. Thanks again to John, Gary, Russ, Frank and Bob—The BBC Band.

39 bags of food were taken to the Food Pantry in June. Thank you for your generosity!

The Food Pantry is in need of personal care items. Food items most needed are cereal, pancake mix, pancake syrup, peanut butter, jelly, tuna fish, small cans of soup, dry soup mixes and mac & cheese.

Please bring your items on the FIRST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH so that our “Food Pantry Delivery Angels” only have to make one trip.

We hope all those that attended our annual banquet on June 6 enjoyed the food, the entertainment by the “Sweet Sixteens” from Amherst HS, the dinner and the fellowship. Check out the pictures that were taken thanks to Brenda Wisz. (see page 5)

We will be planning the schedule this summer for next year. If you have any suggestions please call Lori Abramo (838-1752) or Kathy George (834-9751).
