And when we hurt,
We can just smile and bear it

President’s Message
At this early point in my term, allow me to express
my deep appreciation to my fellow Centro Ladies
for tirelessly accompanying me to our district af-
fairs and special events, and for participating in
our projects. I truly admire your dedication and
hard work. I believe that dedication and devotion
are the traits that bind us together, and these are
the same traits that will eventually bring us to the
achievement of our goals -- the Rotary way.
Again, maraming salamat po!

PP Zeny, Is that You??
PATER noster, qui es in cœlis, sanctificatur nomen tuum. Ad-veniat regnum tuum; fiat voluntas tua, sicut in cœlo, et in ter-ra…. This is the earliest memory of our PP Zeny, as she listened to her blind grandfather teach her how to recite prayers in Latin. She adored her Lolo, cherishing the stories he read to her as a small girl, until she drifted off to dreamland. We always thought we know PP Zeny very well. We could tell that she has arrived when her infectious laughter fills the room. We are familiar with her work, her loving family, and how much she loves Rotary. But did you know that that she was the “Sipa ng Laste” champion in her childhood neighbourhood? She used to strut around with a garland of “laste” (rubber bands) around her neck, a trophy of her winnings, until her mother chopped the rubber bands, sautéed them and was about to feed it to her until her Lolo came to her rescue. In fact, her mother lamented that she should have been a boy because she feared nothing and no one. Well, we all know now that she would rather play computer games and watch TV, and that when it comes to her precious children and grandchildren, PP Zeny has turned into a complete softie. Her first crush was a Chinese mestizo whom PP Zeny described as a “perfect gentleman, very kind, humble and liked to go out with her and her friends”, quite the opposite of her husband of more than 40 years, whom she says is her one and only love, just the way he is! Being from a poor family, PP Zeny believed that education will be her ticket to uplift her family’s economic status. She persevered in her studies, and her finishing Bachelor of Science in Com-merce at Roosevelt College was her first major success. Priori-tizing her family rather than herself, she would give all
9 The CENTRO The CENTRO Page
Volume 13 Issue 5 August 16, 2013
her earnings to her mother. Even then, she knew the im-portance of hard work, and she never envisioned herself to be an employee forever, which eventually led to her being the successful businesswoman she is today. Of all her successes, however, PP Zeny considers her children as her major achievement in life. With her upbringing, she believes that she has raised her children to be assets rather than liabilities to her family and our society. She used to like red, now she prefers pastel colors. She still likes native dishes as before, but her favourite TV/movie per-sonality now is Brangelina (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie), quite far from her idols of yesteryears, Bernard Bonnin and Vilma Santos. She used to groove to Beatles music, but now she likes to sing to “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion. Then and now, before or after, she is still our very own Cen-tro sister, the one and the only PP Zeny Dictado!

ROTARY BASICS
Enhanced functions in the new Rotary website
19 August 2013 rotary.org launches with a new look and feel, better naviga-
tion, and enhanced functions. One of the services to districts and clubs that
will really see improvements will be the activities that forward contact and
background information about prospective members to district leaders. In a
high-speed environment where individuals want to connect to and get in-
volved with Rotary clubs as fast as possible, we can now provide you their
information immediately for your evaluation.
As always, it is up to you and your membership team to determine if the
candidate is a good fit for any of the clubs or programs in your district.
What will I receive?
You will continue to receive the following information from prospective
members:
• First and last name, e-mail address, and phone number
• Profession and company
• Preferred club meeting location and times
• Previous Rotary Program participation and personal contact with Rotary
• NEW THIS YEAR – Prospective members’ LinkedIn profile web address.
What will be my role?
As district governor, you’re encouraged to evaluate each candidate. You can
then contact prospective members directly to follow up by: providing an
overview of Rotary, suggesting local clubs, and coordinating meeting visits.
Or, you can or pass the information on to the district membership chair
and/or club president(s) for follow-up.
What should I do with these e-mails?
1. Carefully evaluate all individuals who submit a membership interest form
2. Send a welcoming message (or ask your membership chair to so do) in-
cluding: (cont. on page 11

ROTARY BASICS
a. A thank you for his/her interest in Rotary
b. An overview of Rotary (e.g. new member bulletin, club brochure tem-
plates) and your local clubs
c. A summary of a recent club/district service project, and typical club/
district activities
3. Offer to forward the candidate’s interest form to clubs in your district you
feel would be a good fit for the individual
4. Ensure that you or a club president continues to be in contact with the
individual
5. Consider tracking membership interest and potential by creating a tiered
prospective member database
6. Fill out the progress update form so RI can track the status of online mem-
bership inquiries and measure the effectiveness of the program
What about incomplete inquiries with no name, contact information, and/
or any test messages?
You may disregard them. To improve the speed with which these inquiries
are forwarded to district leaders for consideration, RI staff will no longer be
screening the submissions for completeness. You may receive a few inquir-
ies that were abandoned by the visitor before completion or submissions
entered as tests out of curiosity about the form.
Too young or not yet qualified for Rotary club membership?
Facilitate early interest in Rotary from students by helping them to connect
with Rotary Programs such as Rotaract, Interact, or Youth Exchange. Encour-
age professionals perhaps too young for your current clubs’ profiles to seek
out volunteer opportunities with the clubs as a means of introducing them-
selves and becoming acquainted with the existing members.
What about Rotarians who are relocating or are referring a candidate to
another club?
In a separate mailing, we will inform you about the improvements made for
members who would either like to change clubs or refer someone to anoth-
er club.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL Updates
Dear fellow Rotarians,
Our goal in 2013-14 is to Engage Rotary, Change Lives . All of us know that Rotary has incredible potential to do good work. It’s time to recognize how much more we could be doing and start working on new ways to turn that potential into reality. We’re going to do this by engaging Rotarians – by get-ting them involved, by getting them inspired, and by making sure that all Rotarians know just what a gift they have in Rotary.
We’re going to make sure that the work we do in Rotary is solid, effective, and sustainable. And we’re going to make sure that Rotary itself will last – by committing to our goal of 1.3 million Rotarians in our clubs by the year 2015.
That goal is a little different from membership goals we’ve had in the past. The goal isn’t just bringing in new members. The goal is growing Rotary. The goal is making Rotary bigger, not just with more members, but with more involved, engaged, motivated members who will be the ones to lead us into our future.
Each of us has our own reason for joining Rotary – but I believe we all want to make a difference. We all want to be doing something meaningful. That is absolutely essential for us to remember when we talk about membership.
We’re not asking just anyone to join Rotary. We’re looking to attract busy, successful, motivated people who care. We’re asking them to take their valu-able time and give it to Rotary. So if they say yes, and they come and join our club, then we’d better be showing them that their time in Rotary is well
spent.
We have to make sure that every Rotarian, in every club, has a meaningful job – one that makes a real difference to the club and the community. Be-cause when you’re doing something meaningful in Rotary, Rotary is mean-ingful to you.
In Rotary, we all have something to give. At every stage of our lives and our careers, Rotary has something for all of us – a way to let us do more, be more, and give more. Rotary gives our lives more meaning, more purpose, and greater satisfaction. And the more we give through Rotary, the more Rotary gives back to us in return.

For your Information
Easy Helpful Hints for House Cleaning
Clean a Mirror
You don’t have to buy glass cleaners and paper towels to clean
your mirrors. Just some vinegar and an old newspaper is all you
need to keep your mirrors shining as new. Your house will look
cleaner if the mirrors are clean.
Cleaning the Microwave
Cleaning a microwave is easy. Fill up a cup of water and put it in
there on high for a few minutes. The steam from the cup will loos-
en any stuck-on food, and then you can just wipe it away. It’s that
simple.
Cleaning the Fridge
A fridge looks big and cleaning it looks even bigger. Follow my
steps and the work will be a bit easier. First toss out any bad food.
Then start with wiping down the top shelves and work down. Bak-
ing soda and water make a great cleaner and won’t leave your
fridge smelling like
harsh cleanser. After you wipe out the crispers, line them with
paper towels for easier cleaning next time. Cleaning the fridge was
never this easy.
Cleaning your Bathroom
You can use lemon oil to shine the tiles of your bathroom. Lemon
oil will also prevent mold and mildew. Use a false teeth bubbling
tablet to avoid rings. Sometimes the problem with shower is that
hard water gets build up there. Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and
place it over shower head to remove hard water buildup. You can
use alcohol to shine bathroom faucets.

- When the students arrived, they con-
verged and soon listened to the talk of RS Nino Lu

stead. Prizes will be 1000, 500 and 300 pesos.
c). Assessments for Essay-Writing:
- PN Pen: When we arrived, we realized there were no con-
test mechanics, so we were rattled. I was also surprised that I was
the emcee, I was not ready because I didn’t know the names of the
teachers, speakers, etc. However in total it was OK, we just fabricat-
ed the mechanics there.
- Sec. Precy: Over-all it was OK, just those things like we did-
n’t know the names.
- Rtn Cecile: That was my 1st time to attend a service project.
Coordination with the school was OK, and we were able to get a good
number of participants. We just missed out on small items like there
was no program, mechanics, etc. These are small duties but we need
to assign someone to do them before the event itself.
- Rtn Evs: I apologize for the missed items, I was supposed
to oversee it but I needed to look after another matter, but that is not
an excuse. I agree that next time we should already form commit-
tees. Our next project is poster-making so we have to prepare for
that.
d). Poster-Making Contest on August 14, Wed. from 8am – 12 noon
at Central III. There will be approx.. 40 attendees.
- Our judges will be Gov. Rey Castillo, PP Gina and PP Ed
