We delight in thebeauty of the butterfly,
but rarely admit thechanges it has gone
through to achievethat beauty.
While “Natural” and “Organic” are still the most-preferred food labels, a survey finds that “Grown in the USA” is becoming more and more popular. Americans are increasingly worried about food contamination, and concerned about water treatment and crop fertilization in other countries. There is also growing support for family farms and local sourcing. People are also very concerned about the economy and job losses. Buying “Grown
in the USA” is a way to help fellow Americans. Green buying behavior seems to be crossing all socioeconomic barriers. Consumers now have a better understanding of how green choices in personal care, food and household products directly affect the well being of their families as well as the planet. They seem to know that together we can make a difference!

A carbon footprint measures the amount of greenhouse gases that are produced by the activities of a person, household or business within a specified timeframe. There are several different types of greenhouse gases, but the footprint is usually expressed in tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The Nature Conservancy has a carbon footprint calculator that can estimate the emissions associated with how you eat, travel, and use electricity. Many companies use the World Resources Institute’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol to measure, manage and report the greenhouse gas emissions produced from their operations. New legislation in the U.S. will soon require some businesses to report this information to the EPA.

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Obispo Hyperbaric in San Luis Obispo offers mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) which is beneficial in treating many chronic diseases and conditions. So how does it work?
While a person lies down and relaxes in the hyperbaric chamber, pressurized oxygen saturates his/her body and improves natural healing from within. The increase in atmospheric pressure found in the chamber, allows more oxygen to reach the cells of the body. This saturation with oxygen may have many healing and therapeutic benefits. You can just lie down and sleep or relax while pressurized oxygen saturates your body and improves natural healing.
The basic principle of HBOT is to infuse a person’s red blood cells, plasma, joint fluid, cerebral fluid and other tissues throughout the body with more oxygen.
Some of the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen include: increased energy, improved circulation, calming effect on the nervous system, reduce tension and migraine headaches, improved memory, and accelerated healing (including post- surgery). Current research is finding that HBOT may have benefits for a variety of symptoms because of its ability to infuse the body with oxygen.
Growing up with both parents as professionals in the medical field, I can say that the art of healing is in my blood. Over the years, I have gravitated towards holistic medicine because I believe the body should be treated as a whole and not only focused on a single condition/symptom.
A few years ago my husband was diagnosed with lymphoma, which lead me to purchase the Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber. I’m pleased to say this has assisted in his partial remission. This unique healing therapy has worked for the ones I love and many others. Contact me and let’s meet. Together, we can discuss how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can make your life a picture of health.

drinking Green Tea may help with Weight Loss
A recent study published in the Nutrition Journal found that green tea may be more effective at suppressing appetite than plain water. In addition,
research shows that green tea gives your metabolism a slight lift. Just don't add sugar because it'll counteract that calorie-burning advantage. Enjoy
a cup of hot or iced green tea with breakfast, lunch, and dinner to maximize your weight-loss efforts. green tea pound cake:
This a variation of basic pound cake flavored with matcha green tea has a subtle green tea flavor, and is not overly sweet. ingredients: 2 large eggs / 1 cup whole wheat

health benefits of
Carob...by Alicia Hawkins
While very few of us can deny the sensational flavor of chocolate, it may not fit into everyone’s healthy diet. Carob is a tasty fruit pod with a naturally sweet flavor similar to chocolate. Substitute it into your baking or enjoy it as a snack! Below are some healthy benefits of choosing carob:
nutritional information: Carob is low in fat, rich in fiber, contains protein, and carbohydrates making it a great pre-workout snack!
caffeine free: For those with heart problems or an aversion to caffeine, chocolate is a no-no. Carob is naturally caffeine and stimulant free.
oxalate free: Oxalates in foods such as chocolate can contribute to kidney stones. If you are at risk, carob can make a great chocolate alternative.
High in calcium: Carob is high in calcium, which is essential for healthy bones.
great for the stomach: Carob can help treat coughs and is a great all-natural remedy for diarrhea. It can also ease nausea, vomiting, or an upset stomach.

some facts aboutWoodDid you know that we clear about 200,000 acres of rainforest every day? At the going rate, we will consume all of the earth's rainforests within 40 years. That's only two frightening statistics from many. Ensure your wood products are from sustainably managed forests. Wood is a perfect renewable and sustainable resource, providing it doesn't come from the rainforests or old growth wilderness areas of the world. Forest Stewardship Certified timber is grown from sustainably managed forests that are accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Look for their logo on your next purchase.

Rolling toward aGreener lifestyle!
by Sean Murphy
Skateboarders can get a bad rap because of the select few who rudely weave through crowded sidewalks, injure themselves on big stunts with little protection, or grind up public curbs and rails. But before you go shaking your fist at the next skater rolling down the street, consider this: We live in an age where more and more youth spend their free time in front of a screen instead of outside. We live in a country where childhood obesity is at an all time high. We live in a world where the price of fossil fuel is steadily increasing. Skateboarding combats all of these issues. It offers good exercise, a lot of fun, and a great mode of transportation (non believers should try a long board, they are surprisingly fast). And if skating isn’t for you, at least remember that a skateboard is not an unequivocal symbol for trouble. And most importantly, give a friendly wave to the next skater you see rolling down the street, who may or may not be breaking a string of laws.

Aloe Vera... plant of immortalityHumanity has utilized Aloe Vera, or True Aloe, for thousands of years. Some claim that the Egyptians were the first to cultivate the succulent plant, and legends say Cleopatra used Aloe Vera on her skin to reduce the signs of aging, but the use of Aloe may have gone back even further. It’s easy to see why humans have coveted the plant since the dawn of civilization. Aloe is easy to grow. Just keep the plant out of extreme temperatures, don’t overwater it, put it in indirect sunlight, and it should thrive. Aloe is best known for its ability to relieve burns, but it’s also great for blemishes like acne, and even small boils and cysts. Aloe juice boosts the immune system and is a great source of vitamin C. If you’re buying one, remember that the older the plant, the better.

Autumn equinoxThe word equinox comes from the Latin words for “equal night.” In the language of science, an equinox is either of two points on the celestial sphere (imaginary sphere of infinite radius with the earth at its center) where the ecliptic (the great circle on the celestial sphere that lies in the plane of the earth’s orbit) and the celestial equator intersect. For the rest of us, it’s one of two times a year when the Sun crosses the equator, and the day and night are of approximately equal length. This year it will “fall”on September 22nd.

Compost
as much as possible this
Fall!Instead of putting your leaves, branches, and
weeds into plastic bags only to be picked up by trash collectors, consider turning
this lawn “waste” into nutrient-rich soil ready for your spring garden! Collecting compost is quite easy and can save money on soil and fertilizer when it comes time to start your garden after the cold season. Almost everything in your yard is compostable. That includes grass and plant clippings, leaves, dead or brown weeds, with the
exception of weeds that have seeds or pernicious weeds (i.e. ivy) that can withstand composting. Mix in some of your kitchen waste as well – fruit and vegetable peels, teabags, and coffee grinds – to increase your yield. If you don’t have the time or energy to clean up your yard after a long work week, support the local economy by hiring kids in the neighborhood to help you with your yard work. Not only is it affordable, but it’s also more
ecological!

Toys 3 ways to make better choices!
1. simple toys: Give gifts that stimulate a child’s imagination. Consider items like clay, paints, or other art supplies. Or, give kids materials for building their own toys, such as supplies for assembling a kite or sewing a cloth doll. 2. Buy Local and sweatshop-free: Visit local arts and crafts fairs to buy all-natural, toxin-free toys (like musical instruments, wooden boats and cars, or handmade dollhouses) directly from local artisans. Find companies that sell toys not made in sweatshops overseas. 3. non-material gifts: Offer your time to take a child on an outing, or use your money to pay someone local to share his or her skills with a child. Music or art lessons will have a longer lasting impact on your child than just another packaged toy.

Green andClean
by The “Green” Franciscan Sister,
Janet Corcoran, OSF
As St. Francis had a reverence and respect for all of creation, we too should be respectful of our environment. One
area is our home/apartment. Many cleaners may irritate our eyes,
lungs, and skin due to the various hazardous substances
within them. The air inside a typical home is on
average more polluted than the air outside,
according to The United States Environmental
Protection Agency. Here are some ways
to clean in a more environmentally friendly way with baking soda and vinegar:
1. Vinegar is effective in cleaning windows and mirrors. Use
approximately a quart of water mixed with one-fourth cup of white vinegar on the
windows and wipe dry with a newspaper or cloth. No streaking!
2. Baking soda may be used as a carpet deodorizer. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and let it remain
overnight. Then, vacuum in the morning.

Massage a luxury? No! It’s good preventative care that feels like a luxury.
3. Sprinkle some baking soda inside of the dishwasher before using. It will remove some of the material that collects inside. It also deodorizes.
4. Use baking soda for cleaning the toilet. Sprinkle the baking soda into the bowl, then squirt with vinegar, and scour with a toilet brush. This will clean and deodorize.
5. Clean the tub and tiles by using two cups of baking soda and enough water to make a thick paste. Place paste on the tub or tile and leave for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Use a soft rag and move in a circular motion over the area. After removing the paste, spray the area with 50/50 vinegar and water to rinse.
6. For a slow moving drain, try using approximately a quarter cup of baking soda. Pour the soda down the clogged drain, followed by a half cup of vinegar. Tightly close the drain until fizzing stops, then flush the drain area with boiling water. For completely clogged drains, use a plunger or a plumber’s snake to dislodge the clogged material.
7. Counters and walls can be cleaned with a mixture of approximately one part vinegar and three parts water.
Let’s continue to be respectful of life by reducing, recycling, reusing, and conserving the goods of our sister, Mother Earth.

vinegar, salt & Water: 6 cups vinegar/1 cup salt/1 cup hot water. Pour ingredients into a container, close lid, and shake vigorously for 1 – 2 minutes until all of the salt is completely dissolved. Apply liberally to the foliage of the weed and directly on the root.
Boiling Water: If you have prized plants nearby that could be sensitive to salt runoff, this simple boiled water recipe may be the more appropriate choice: Simply grab a tea kettle, fill it with water and bring it to a full, rolling boil. Apply water liberally to the foliage of the weed and directly on the root. Try to do this method when it is cool outside for maximum effectiveness. Use caution and wear oven mitts, long pants and shoes for protection when pouring. Keep children away!
With both methods, if the weeds are large, you may need to apply twice. Happy Gardening!

If your garlic has been sitting around for a while, it may sprout! When
it does, you can still use it for cooking (it will be extra potent) or it can be planted in the yard. Just break apart the segments,
and plant them separately. If taken care of, each clove will grow into a whole bulb... a bonus!
Garlic... plant it!

DarkChocolate
good and good for you!
The news? How sweet it is! A growing number of studies
show that chocolate, especially antioxidant-rich dark chocolate, has
health benefits that put it squarely on the latest list of superfoods.
A key reason chocolate has so many health benefits is that it is rich in flavonoids, which are naturally occurring substances found in plants
that can provide a serious boost in antioxidant action for you. Studies show that the darker the chocolate, the better. Not only does dark chocolate have a higher concentration of antioxidants than milk chocolate, but milk chocolate is also higher in added sugar and unhealthy fats. Dark chocolate is still loaded with fat and calories, so eat a max of 1 to 2 ounces a day. British researchers analyzed seven studies on chocolate and cardiovascular health involving more than 114,000 people in the United States, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and Sweden and found that people who ate more chocolate significantly reduced their risk for heart disease. Researchers concluded that people who ate the most chocolate weekly had a 37 percent lower risk of any heart disease than those who ate the least amounts of dark chocolate. A Harvard
University study found that one or two doses of dark chocolate per week could even help you live longer.

eat your Fall Colors!
by Katy Budge
An easy rule of thumb for healthy eating is to go for colorful fruits and vegetables. These tend to contain more antioxidants, which are continually being touted as our body’s best defense against ailments as varied as diabetes, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer, and aging issues such as Alzheimer’s.
As the fall colors emerge in the landscape, a whole new host of colorful crops will also be showing up in farmers’ markets and on grocery shelves. (If you’re buying from the latter, checking the state/country of origin is a good way to make sure you’re buying “seasonally”). Here’s some “local color” to watch for…
apples, especially from See Canyon – enjoy in salads or with cheeses, delay them from
turning brown after cutting by putting slices immediately in a bowl of cold water with a bit of lemon juice or salt. Brussels sprouts – slice thin, toss in olive oil & salt and throw in a grill basket. swiss chard – coarsely chop, sauté with garlic. sweet potatoes and/or winter squash – cut in half, bake until soft, scoop out flesh and use as a mashed side dish or puréed into soup.
Local restaurants and chefs that make the extra effort – and it is indeed an extra effort – to source seasonal fare will start switching things up this time of year, so look for new dishes being rotated onto their menus and specials’ boards.
Visit Katy Budge’s blog for more healthy tips and articles at www.CasaFestiva.com
Picture this... you’re at a dinner party enjoying yourself, when suddenly an enthusiastic hand gesture knocks your glass of red wine over right onto the host’s new white carpet! What to do? Don’t panic.
Grab the nearest glass of white wine. Pour onto the red wine stain. Flood
the stain and then blot it up immediately with a towel.
Then you can apologize to your host.

how you can help save the
Sea Otter...by Alicia Hawkins
An iconic resident of the California central coast, the sea otter was once a thriving species ranging from Baja California all the way through to the pacific rim. Due to extensive hunting, the sea otter population was considered extinct by the 1920’s. In the 1970’s they were placed on the endangered species list and their numbers have been expanding, but at an extremely slow rate. Preservation of this species is important to help keep invertebrate populations in check, and as a result, preserve the kelp
forests. Here are just a few small changes that can be made in your life to keep these fuzzy creatures alive:
1) Buy sustainably harvested sea food. This helps keep otter food from being over harvested and also prevents otters from getting caught in large nets intended for other species. 2) support local and organic farms that don’t use pesticides. 3) fertilize your garden with non-toxic products. 4) fix oil leaks in your car, motorcycle, or RV. 5) take action by donating to a cause dedicated to preserving the sea otter population such
as the Monterey Bay Aquarium or the Defenders of Wildlife organization.
By doing this, you will not only help preseve sea otters, but other sea life as well!

well, what’s up with
Water?Do you choose mineral or sparkling? Quenching our thirst has never been more complicated. Imported and domestic bottled waters have become very popular in recent years as a low calorie substitute for soft drinks. They go by different names and depending on the source, they’ll be carbonated, rich in minerals, flavored or all three! Here are some names and definitions you may find helpful in making a decision:
1. mineral water: Water that usually contains sodium, magnesium and calcium; in some states, it must have at least 500 parts per million dissolved mineral solids to be labeled “mineral water.” Most of the time it will be carbonated.
2. sparkling water: Carbonated water in which the gasses that are dissolved in the water are “captured” before they can escape, resulting in the telltale fizz.
3. club soda: Artificially carbonated tap water to which minerals have been added.
4. seltzer: Artificially carbonated tap water that is frequently flavored and/ or sweetened, making it high in calories.

7 helpful household tips for
A Greener Fall!1. Clean the ducts and area behind the
dryer. And don’t forget, clean the filter after every use and every once in awhile, give it a good wash.
2. Check windows for proper caulking. If you have single-pane windows, add storm windows. Even a plastic film over windows will reduce heat loss.
3. Check doors for weather stripping and replace as necessary. If drafts sneak in under exterior doors, replace the threshold or block the drafts with a rolled-up towel or blanket.
4. Check your roof for any missing or damaged tiles or shingles.
5. Clean the roof gutters and make sure downspouts are pointed away from the house. Now would be a good time to install an eco-friendly rain barrel.
6. Bring in any houseplants that have
spent the summer outdoors. They’ll help clean the air.
7. As the autumn leaves begin to fall, consider raking them up rather than using a “blower”. Once raked up, use them as mulch to protect plants throughout the winter or add them to a compost pile.
8. Before packing away those summer clothes, go through them and determine which items to keep, which items to re-purpose into something else and which to donate.

Fall Planting pointers!Though many people gear up to work on their yards and gardens in the spring, fall is actually an ideal time for yard work. Here are a few ideas for bringing your garden to life in the fall:
fertilize organically. When preparing your soil for next year, add organic, slow-release fertilizers that will help enhance your soil over time. These fertilizers are made of natural materials, contain vital nutrients to help your plants grow, and prevent plants from getting nitrogen. plant trees. When autumn rolls around, summer heat waves are long past, rainfall is usually more plentiful, and new trees, bushes and flowers have a greater
chance of surviving than they would if they were planted during a hotter season. Choose species native to your area as well as those that are drought and pest resistant and can grow in the kind of soil and amount of sunlight available on your property. compost the leaves. See composting suggestions on page 28 of this edition. other ideas. If you have a vegetable or fruit garden that you want to maintain throughout the winter, consider planting root bulbs and leafcrops that will continue to produce despite the colder weather. Fall is also a great time to plant all varieties of flowering bulbs for a beautiful garden come spring.

3 eco-friendly Fabrics to consider...The cotton used in most fabrics requires tons of pesticides and water for growth. There are several fabric alternatives to cotton that are more eco-friendly. Here are three popular ones:
1. Hemp: Probably the most well known alternative fabric, hemp grows quickly, doesn’t require much water, and is very pest-resistant. It also grows densely, which eliminates weeds and the need for harmful pesticides. Hemp has historically been used for rope making because it is very long lasting and durable.
2. Bamboo: This versatile plant can be spun into an extremely soft, durable, anti-microbial material. It’s also moisture and odor resistant. Check out bamboo clothing, diapers, sheets, and more!
3. organic cotton: Grown using far fewer pesticides and water, organic cotton is much better for the environment, if you want to stick to the old standard. Just make sure you’re buying certified organic, fair trade organic cotton treated with a variety of eco-friendly or natural dyes.
Like most products claiming to be “eco-friendly,” it’s important to research your fabric and clothing companies before making a purchase. Make sure no harsh chemicals are used in the growing or manufacturing process of these fabrics.

what is Precycling?Precycling is about reducing waste by avoiding packaging when shopping. You can do this by taking your own bags, takeaway containers etc. Precycling is the stage before recycling. Unlike recycling, however, it expends very little energy. Precycling happens at the point of purchase, where you make a decision to choose the product that comes in the least packaging or helps to divert waste from a landfill. Also bring along your own containers or bag. For example, instead of buying packaged sandwiches, you can choose to take a lunchbox to work or school, containing cloth napkins and a reusable water bottle.

Bleach is a strong chemical used to whiten clothes, and kill germs in sinks, drains and toilets. It contains cancer causing chlorine. If you have a septic tank bleach kills the useful bacteria that help the sewage to decompose. Healthier choices include vinegar, lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen, borax, washing soda, sodium hydrosulfite (salt & water). Select from these but do not combine them.
