Lent – Season of Sorrow? I’ve always been very appreciative of the seasons of the Church year. Their ebb and flow give rhythm to the seasons of our lives. Advent comes in the dark days of late autumn, and is illuminated by the glow of soft candlelight. We are asked to wait patiently for the birth of Jesus, and to contemplate what this new birth means in our lives. The joy of the Christmas season comes and goes quickly – twelve days as the song tells us. Twelve days to rejoice with the heavenly angels; twelve days to receive Emmanuel – God with us! Epiphany is our Season of Light, a light emanating from Jesus; a light that cuts through the darkness; a light to shine in our world and in our lives. During the Epiphany Season, Christ shows himself to us in many ways. He is baptized for ministry and tempted by Satan. Epiphany ends with the Transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain peak, shining brilliantly for his disciples to see. And that brings us to our Lenten journey. Lent begins this year on Wednesday March 6. As always, it begins in ashes. We’ll worship at 7:30, and I will mark the cross of Christ on your foreheads with ashes. We are reminded that ‘we are dust, and to dust we shall return.’ This rite is called the ‘Imposition of Ashes.’ I like that! It suggests an interruption of our lives, a cathartic moment when we acknowledge and consider our mortality. Thus we begin our forty-day journey through Lent. I believe the season of Lent is frequently misunderstood. Lent is often viewed as a time of sorrow, when we are to feel guilty for the way we live our lives. Church tradition often asks people to sacrifice something during Lent. I’m not convinced that this is a helpful practice. Perhaps it is to show our solidarity with Christ, who resists Satan’s temptations for forty days in the wilderness, and who eventually dies on the cross on Good Friday. I can’t make the connection between a trivial act like giving up chocolate for six weeks and Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for all of creation. Instead of giving something up, it might be more helpful to add something to the practice of our faith. This year, we’ll again provide each family with a Lenten Devotional Book. This resource offers us helpful prayer and contemplation during these days as we prepare for Holy Week. Please look for these devotionals and take one home with you. My hope is that each of us may find courage and that we may strengthen our faith during this sacred time of the Church Year. God’s Blessings now and always,

Pastor Tancredi

Ava Zinno is a senior Communication Sciences and Disorders major at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. She will be graduating at the end of the Spring 2019 semester and is working to become a Speech-Language Pathologist. Aside from speech, Ava is greatly involved in the performing arts, especially music. She is a Music Performance Minor on voice and is a member of various vocal ensembles at West Chester University, including Mastersingers, Chamber Choir, and Vocal Jazz where she was the president. Ava is the Recording Secretary of the Epsilon Epsilon chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI), a professional international women’s music fraternity that centers around service and spreading music throughout the community. She also sings in two small choirs within SAI. Ava began singing with the Centennial Lutheran church choir in December of 2018 and is beyond grateful to be a part of this wonderful, loving community. She would like to thank Centennial for welcoming her with open arms and allowing her to share her love of music while also serving our Lord. In addition to music, Ava enjoys dancing and acting. She is a part of both the West Chester University Dance Company and Theatre, where she has choreographed dance and performed in a number of productions. In the future, Ava intends to keep her passions for theatre, music, and dance in her life while also working as a Speech-Language Pathologist to assist clients who present with various communication disorders.

Strummer Steele is a 3rd-year junior at West Chester University, where she majors in vocal performance and minors in music history. She studies voice under Dr. Stephen Ng. Strummer is a member of West Chester University’s Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. David DeVenney. She is also a vocalist and cittern-player in the broken consort of Collegium Musicum, an ensemble dedicated to the performance of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music.

Strummer is a student participant in the National Association for Teachers of Singing (NATS) organization. She is the president of the student NATS chapter at West Chester University. She has ranked in NATS student competitions at the regional and national levels. Upon graduation, she intends to apply for membership and work as a private studio teacher.

Her home parish is St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Chambersburg,

Pennsylvania, where she chants in the choir. She studied Byzantine chant under her father Larry Steele and Rassem Al-Massih. She is delighted to join the community of Centennial Lutheran as soprano section leader, and hopes to sing with you all for the rest of her time in

West Chester.

From Director of Music Ministry, Jack Charles

Holy Communion - Setting V

During Lent this year we will be using this beautiful and ancient setting of the liturgy. It is written in a gentle, rhythmically free style know as Gregorian chant. This type notation is named in honor of Pope Gregory (590 – 604) who was responsible for organizing the liturgy used in Roman Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran Churches. Please look over this setting found on pages 156 to164. Notice that there are three types of notes. The first looks like a quarter note without a stem. The second looks like a half note, but again has no stem. The third is like a whole note with lines on each side ( lOl ). Although they suggest short, long and longest duration, the rhythm comes from the way we would say the words. The music of this setting is centuries old and was used by Martin Luther. When I began my career in church music, it was found in the black Service Book and Hymnal first printed in March of 1958. There have been three hymnals published since that date and all of them have included this setting. The gentle flowing quality of this music is particu-larly appropriate for Advent and Lent. It has been the favorite of many members in several of the congregations which I have served.

The Tender Land

(Starring our Soprano Section Leader, Strummer Steele)

Copland’s second opera, The Tender Land, was commissioned by Richard Rogers and

Oscar Hammerstein II, who in the 1940s and 1950s wrote the famous Broadway musicals,

Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music.

Copland's second opera is a much more ma-ture work than the earlier The Second Hurri-

cane. Written for young singers, the work contains some of the best music of Cop-

land's mature years. The opera tells the story of a poor Midwest farming family and the arrival in town of two drifters. At a local

dance the family’s elder daughter meets and falls in love with one of them. They dream of eloping, but cooler heads prevail and the drifters move on the next day. The daughter, however, decides to leave home and make

her way in the world, changing the family’s life forever. The opera ends as it had opened

– wistfully, when the younger daughter dances alone.

Tossed Salad On the “Three Sides” podcast (ELCA, Sept. 6, 2018), Wendy Davidson, a leader at the Kellogg Company, shares how her Christian-ity informs her work. Because her adult faith emerged from several denominational influences, she con-siders variety to be a strength, not only spiritually but throughout life. Davidson encourages her co-workers to bring their unique per-sonalities and ideas to the table to create a metaphorical salad. “It doesn’t mean that the salad now be-comes one homogenous blob; it is still distinctly the flavors of the sal-ad ingredients,” she says. “But they’ve all found a way to come to-gether to make something that much more flavorful than they could have been all on their own.” Viewing church and our communi-ties this way could be transforma-tive. What if we welcome different people, invite ideas and resist meld-ing everything into one giant blob? Then we can savor each “ingredient” and the resulting gour-met dish. Delicious!

To God You Shall Return The traditional Ash Wednesday words “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return” might seem depressing. But in our often death-denying culture, some might find it refreshing to hear the frank statement that we can do nothing to save ourselves, physically or spiritually — that, no matter how we try to avoid sin, we can’t untangle ourselves from self-interest. How liberating, then, to know we don’t have to! God loves us as we are and sent Jesus to break sin’s power over us. A pastor described Ash Wednesday as the point you can pinch in the middle of a long piece of ribbon, such that when you lift it high, the two ends — one symbolizing our baptism and the other, our funeral — meet and touch. We come from dust and will return to dust, but we also come from God and will return to God. Ash Wednesday reminds us that we’re always safe in God’s love.
