One day last winter skiers and boarders got a chance to step back in time and ride a hill that many had forgotten even existed. The event was also a way to picture what the future will hold for someone who buys Muskoka’s only private ski hill.

“This is such a remarkable property, and the best way to appreciate it is to experience it,” says Todd Adair* of Cayman Marshall. “So we decided to open it up to a group of guests so they could do just that.”

A few dozen guests spent the day skiing the hill’s five runs – a rare opportunity to enjoy powder skiing in Muskoka – taking in good food and live music in the chalet, and relaxing around the fire at the base of the hill. “It really was a taste test for potential buyers, a chance for them to see what winter weekends are like at this property,” said Todd*.

Although it’s almost forgotten now, for a couple of generations Steven’s Hill was the place to downhill in Muskoka. Located on Griffin Lodge Road south of Huntsville, it was created in the early years of the 20th century, at a time when skiing down the hill was immediately followed by a long climb back up to the top. A mechanical lift was soon added – the region’s first – and for a time the hill attracted highly competitive skiers, including Olympic champion Nancy Green. A massive ski jump was a popular attraction, and school children were bussed to the hill every weekend.

“My husband learned to ski here, and brought me out when we were still dating,” said Francine.

Later known as Curlew Lodge, the hill eventually closed in the 1960s and fell into disrepair.

The current owners came to see it on a whim. “My husband learned to ski here, and brought me out when we were still dating,” said Francine. “We saw that it was for sale, and we started to dream about how much fun it would be to own a ski hill.”

When their offer was accepted, the couple had a “what have we done?” moment, then set to work clearing the hills. Trees that had grown up on the

runs were cut down and the crumbling ruins of the old chalet were removed. The original t-bar lift was repaired and a new cottage chalet – complete with lap pool for summer use – was built midway up the hill.

For fifteen years, the property was a wintery playground for the couple and their friends and family.But life brings changes, and so the property was put on the market. “It’s time for someone else to enjoy this place,” says Francine. “We’ll miss it, though. It’s been a fabulous retreat.”

The story could be told about Ditchburn or Minett, but this version has a couple of twists. For one, the local waterway that inspired the boatbuilder wasn’t Lake Muskoka or Rosseau, but the deltas of the St. Clair River in Michigan. And, unlike the Muskoka boat shops, Chris-Craft boats is still thriving. Greavette and Minett-Shields, Ditchburn and Duke have all folded, killed off by the Depression, or an inability to adapt to changing tastes, or the advent of fiberglass. But Chris-Craft., after a tumultuous 140-some years, is still delivering luxurious boats to customers around the world, including quite a few in Muskoka.

The firm got its start in 1873, when the improbably named Christopher Columbus Smith built his first skiff. Like his older brother, Henry, 13-year-old Chris grew up surrounded by water. His home town of Algonac is located on one of the world’s largest freshwater deltas – the town’s many canals have led some overenthusiastic boosters to call it ‘The Venice of Michigan.’

The Smith brothers and their friends used the river for play and to earn money, hunting ducks for market, and guiding visiting hunters. But Chris soon found he

could get a better and more enjoyable return by building boats for his friends and for the visiting duck hunters. (He also earned renown as a decoy carver – decoys with his CC insignia on them are still highly coveted by collectors.) When Chris was twenty, he went into boat-building full time. It would be nearly 40 years before his company became Chris-Craft., but for the rest of his life he would be known as a superb boatbuilder, someone who knew and understood how to make boats go fast, and also loved to add luxurious touches.

The speed was the element that drove much of his early success. The luxury came later.

It’s difficult for modern boaters to understand just how popular boat racing was in the early 20th century. Races on the Detroit River or the Toronto waterfront drew massive crowds – tens or even hundreds of thousands of spectators who came to watch death-defying drivers like Gar Wood pilot their boats at breathtaking speeds.

It’s a story that’s familiar to every fan of historic Muskoka boats, a tale of a 19th

century boatbuilder who went on to lead an industry. In his teens he began

crafting skiffs to explore his local waterways. As the power boat age dawned, he began building faster

and faster vessels. His talents eventually brought commissions building

luxurious yachts for the world’s wealthiest consumers.

Chris-Craft boats

A historyof Speed and Elegance



Displacement hulls – in which the boat was pushed through the water – soon gave way to hydroplanes, in which the boat rode on top of the water, the way modern boats come up on plane. Steps in the hull helped break the boat free of the water even more, and boats reached previously unimaginable speeds. In 1910, Chris built a boat that went over 30 mph; just three years later, one of his boats ran well over 50 mph. It wasn’t long before airplane motors began providing even more horsepower, particularly after the First World War, when surplus motors were abundant. Speed records were shattered year after year.

Aside from the thrill of the speed, boat builders saw two great benefits in racing: it was a place to test new technology, and it was a way to market their brand. For the same reason that Ferrari and Porsche build Formula One cars today, Chris Smith built boats for Gar Wood a century ago. The most famous racer of his day, Wood helped raise Chris Smith’s name to prominence, while Chris and his sons Jay and Bernard helped Wood win races.

Those prestigious race wins drew clients to Chris and his sons, who were happy to supply luxurious – and fast – boats to an elite clientele.

In Algonac, as in Muskoka, most high end boats were custom orders. Builders like the Smiths might publish a catalogue of models, but their customers knew that they could customize the boat in any way they wished, even altering the hull design by requesting something longer or shorter or wider.

But by 1921, Jay and Bernard had other ideas. Building custom boats was rewarding work – the company would continue doing it for years, crafting for customers like Katherine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. But the younger generation suspected that the real money was to be found in production work. They had seen how Henry Ford and others had used assembly lines to speed production of cars, and they knew the same approach would work with boats. The partnership with Gar Wood was amicably dissolved, and Chris-Craft Boats was finally born.Other boat builders were doing the same thing, or would follow suit. In Muskoka, for example, Greavette boats was launched when Tom Greavette decided to leave his employer, Herb Ditchburn, and set up a modern, production line boat factory just across the road.

But timing is everything. Where Greavette had the misfortune to launch just before the Depression hit, a move that nearly killed the new company as quickly as it had begun, Chris-Craft sprang into existence at a boom time. Pleasure boating was becoming accessible to the middle classes, and production steadily increased through the 1920s. The company’s designers and builders drew on Chris-Craft’s heritage of fast boats and luxurious custom builds to create the best of both: boats that would cut through the water at speed, while featuring luxurious touches and superb craftsmanship.

The Depression hit all boat builders hard, but Chris-Craft weathered it better than most. There were layoffs and work slowed, but even by 1936 the company was starting to buy new property and build an expanded plant as sales started to pick up. By the end of the decade, Chris-Craft was offering a bewildering range of boats – nearly 100 different models, from skiffs and 15-foot runabouts to 55-foot cruisers – and building up to 1,000 boats a year.

Part of the thrill came from the rapid advances in technology. Chris started by

putting car engines into rowboats, pushing them along at speeds of seven or

eight miles an hour. As the motors got better, he and a handful of

other builders began to experiment with a new type of hull.

When the U.S. entered the Second World War, production rapidly switched to military vessels. Chris-Craft built landing craft – over 10,000 by the end of the war – as well as patrol boats, rescue boats, and even target vessels for training navy gunners. Profits during the war years were limited by legislation, but military contracts gave the company a chance to explore new techniques and materials. Plywood and industrial sealants were used for the first time, approaches that presaged the move to plywood boats and later to fiberglass. Chris-Craft also kept up its marketing budget, with slogans like “Buy war bonds today, command your own vessel tomorrow.” Promoting war bonds was good for the country; after the war, it would turn out to be good for Chris-Craft. When the war ended and soldiers came pouring back home, the company entered the biggest boom period it had ever seen. Owning a boat became part of the American dream, and Chris-Craft was a top choice for many of those returning servicemen. The company had also got a jump on many of its competitors, preparing for peacetime production even before Japan surrendered and the war ended.

The Smith family sold the company in 1960, and the firm changed hands several times over the next few decades. (At one time there were actually two separate companies – Chris-Craft Industries owned t.v. stations and chemical plants, but sold the boat-making division and leased the name to another company. The two parts were reunited in 2000.) The company built its last wooden boat in 1972, but the material remained an essential part of the boats. To this day, mahogany, teak and other woods are still used extensively in decks and swim platforms, as well as on dashboards and other decorative locations.

Modern Chris-Craft boats retain more than just a history of wooden detailing. The number of models has diminished considerably – the 2014 catalogue shows 20 models, ranging from 21 to 36 feet. But Chris-Craft remains a builder that takes pride in luxurious details as well as high performance.

Often seen as the lesser known cousin of the “Big 3” Lakes (Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph), Lake of Bays has rightfully earned its place as one of the most desirable lakes in Muskoka to locate. It is the largest lake in The Township of Lake of Bays and is actually the second largest lake in Muskoka.

Located at the top of the watershed and fed by the Oxtongue River, leading from Algonquin Park, the lake is deep and crystal clear, with kilometers of natural shoreline, abundant bays and inlets that make it true to its name. Conveniently located almost equally between Bracebridge and Huntsville, the lake is serviced by the popular waterfront communities of Baysville, Dorset and Dwight.

The Lake’s shoreline vegetation and water quality are preserved and protected by a unique Development Permit Process that was put in place by the Township in 2006. This system brought in guidelines that made it more challenging to develop near the shoreline, and although initially thought to be a negative feature, it is now viewed as a very desirable attribute about this lake. 2. What is the history of your business and where do you think you are headed?The founder of SML Contracting, Bruce Fitter, began his career in 1978 as a designer and builder of custom homes in southern Ontario.

In 1994 after moving to Muskoka he continued his passion for designing and building custom homes by establishing SML Contracting, now one of the larger custom home builders serving the Muskoka area. To ensure a strong future for SML and its dedicated employees, SML has built a management team comprised of partners who are dedicated to moving SML into a strong future serving their clients for years to come.

3. Do you support local suppliers?Yes. SML believes that to be a part of a community, you need to purchase locally. We support the communities in which we work and live.

4. Do you support or do any charity work that you would like to mention?SML Contracting understands the importance of giving back. We avidly support many local and national charities. In Muskoka we support the Table Soup Kitchen Foundation, Life 100.3, the Muskoka Bible Centre, the Huntsville Men’s Shelter, our Mayor’s tournaments and local sports.

What is your niche?SML Contracting is a custom builder with vital knowledge of and experience in northern construction, including a strong respect for conserving the balance of nature in Muskoka’s landscape. 1. What sets you apart from others in your industry?Tamarack assigns a dedicated site supervisor and project manager to each

project. We are licensed engineers helping to deal with engineered solutions as they come up in a timely manner. We utilize critical path management

to deal with tight time lines and publish a construction schedule with every project to help all parties understand when decisions need to be

made. We embrace leading edge technology like becoming Ontario’s first Authorized BONE Structure dealer, a light steel construction system that

will revolutionize the residential building sector.

2. What is the history of your business and where do you think you are headed?

Tamarack North was founded in 1990. We have been in business for 24 years serving the Georgian Bay, Muskoka and more recently the Lake of

Bays market. We see our continued growth serving the hundreds of smaller lakes in the area utilizing the BONE structure platform.

3. Do you support local suppliers?

We have supported local suppliers through the entire history of our business, including lumber yards, local tradesmen, flooring suppliers and

ceramic tile installers. We have a very active Carpenter’s Apprenticeship program to allow our carpenters on staff to gain their full tradesman

qualifications.

4. Do you support or do any charity work that you would like to mention?We are very proud to support Habitat for Humanity as our Charity of

Choice. We also support many other charities in our community.

5. What is your niche?Our slogan really sums it up nicely: “Professional Engineers and Builders of Fine Seasonal Homes.” Our niche is getting the job done right the first time

and on time. It is really important to us that our customers do not miss a summer at their waterfront property. We typically do extremely technically

difficult, complex builds with routine regularity.
