The Causes of Tooth Decay

Introduction• A Maryland-based dentist, Dr. Ophir Alalouf treats children
and adolescents with tooth decay and other problems at Kids Teeth, LLC. After securing his DDS, Dr. Ophir Alalouf completed postgraduate training in pediatric dentistry with the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. In his current practice, he provides treatment and prevention for conditions such as truth decay.
Tooth decay refers to a condition in which bacteria in the mouth have proliferated and produced acidic compounds that damage teeth. Over time, these acidic compounds can create “cavities,” or holes in teeth.
Tooth Decay• These cavities can grow through the enamel, dentin, and
finally into the tooth’s center, where vital tissues called the “pulp” reside.
If left unaddressed, cavities can result in painful symptoms and eventual tooth loss. Cavities appear most often in children, adolescents, and older people. The best protection against tooth decay is to practice preventative care by brushing and flossing daily and by seeing a dentist regularly. Additionally, try to limit or eliminate sugary foods and drinks, which create conditions in the mouth where bacteria can thrive.
