From Fr. Carlos

This week we begin reading from the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, and we begin with one of the most familiar miracles of Jesus, the multiplication of the five loaves and the two fish. Faced with this miraculous account in which this meager offering of food was sufficient to feed five thousand men, and at least as many women and children, many modern commentators seem all too eager to write it off. Some explain it away by saying that the boy’s generosity encouraged others to share the food which they had hidden for themselves. There are lessons to be taken from such interpretations, but these interpretations also entirely miss the point of Jesus’ miracle. We have to remember that Jesus wasn’t just some great moral teacher or some entertainer who could pull food out of thin air. Each of his miracles reveals something about His nature or something about human nature and the journey of faith. So when we’re faced with these miraculous accounts the question we should wrestle with is not, “how am I supposed to believe such an amazing thing?” but rather, “what is the lesson behind the miracle?”

In this case of the multiplication of loaves and fishes, the gospel writer himself begins to unravel this mystery for us when he tells us that this miracle took place near the feast of Passover. Recalling Passover we’re reminded of the unleavened bread which the Hebrew people were told to prepare for their last meal before their flight from Egypt. We’re also reminded of the manna which sustained them during their wandering in the desert. With these two episodes in mind we’re called to reflect on God’s awareness of the needs of His people and the many ways by which he satisfies those needs. As if those connections weren’t enough for us to enter more deeply into today’s gospel, today’s first reading presents us with yet another account of a divine multiplication of bread. All these Old Testament accounts prepare the way for Jesus and for the miracle we hear of today. In the “Bread of Life” discourse, in which the multiplication of loaves and fishes takes place, Jesus makes a claim which only God can make: He is the true bread of heaven that can satisfy the deepest hunger we experience. As miraculous as that multiplication of bread and fish was, it’s not the end of what Jesus will do. The fulfillment of God nourishing His people comes about when Jesus entrusts the disciples with the gift of the Eucharist. In the Eucharist God no longer nourishes us with miraculous bread, instead He gives us His very life, and this is the most perfect way in which He assures us that no matter what we hunger for in this life, whether it be material stability, meaning, or peace, the fulfillment of that desire begins through turning to God with our needs. Once we identify our hungers our human instinct is to address those hungers through the very first thing that comes within our reach. As we try to satisfy these hungers through our limited human means sooner or later the hunger comes back again and it takes an even greater effort to satisfy it. This week Jesus invites us to turn to him with our hungers and our desires. If we do this boldly, placing our needs before God in faith, then we can have the confidence of knowing that God will care for us and nourish us just as He’s been doing since the beginning of salvation history. May we always trust in God and may we find in Him the fulfillment of everything we long for.

Next week’s second collection is for Catholic Relief Services. This collection supports emergency relief, human development, and peace initiatives in 99 countries around the world, where nearly half the population lives on less than $2.00 a day. The collection funds the ministries of five Catholic Church organizations: Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), Migration and Refugee Services (MRS), Social Development and World Peace (SDWP), and The Holy Father’s Relief Fund. For more information, please visit www.usccb.org/crscollection.
