Liturgical Ministers
Dear friends in Christ,
About nine or ten years ago, my doctor told me I was likely suffering from occasional anxiety, due to some symptoms I
was presenting to him. He prescribed some medicine to use as needed and recommended some other helpful ap-
proaches. I also saw a counselor for a few visits and was glad that I did. Anxiety has been a steady presence in my life
since then, sometimes better, sometimes worse, and usually unpredictably so. I find that it occasionally affects me in
public moments like liturgy. When I try to engage in planning or visioning, anxiety can cause me to tend to think of the worst
outcomes rather than the best ones. I share this with you now for a few reasons: first, to reassure you that if I happen to be strug-
gling on a given day, I will be perfectly fine; second, to help reduce any stigma about anxiety in my mind or yours; third, to say that I
think the coronavirus pandemic has had more of a negative impact in my life than I expected . . . and maybe you can relate . . . and
maybe if you can't, you might be able to someday and you'll remember that you read this.
For me, the pandemic has changed my experience of parish priesthood into what can sometimes feel like "the worst of both
worlds." It has reduced the best parts of priestly ministry to a bare minimum: visiting the sick, the homebound, the school kids, the
hospitalized and those in care centers, and simply socializing with people and getting to know them better. It has also amplified the
more challenging and difficult parts of being a pastor: administering programs, facilities, budgets, human resources, schedules,
etc. It would not surprise me if this "worst of both worlds" effect is something you can all relate with as well, in your personal,
professional, and family lives.
What can we do, apart from suffering along with Christ and his body, which is sick in so many places because so many of its members
are sick? We can make a determination to pray daily, scheduling it if necessary, and turning off our phones if possible. We can try to
take good care of ourselves and unplug from bad news from time to time. We can remember that this is temporary and that it is
really bad right now, but that is sometimes the way things go. We can make a conscious effort to practice mitigation techniques as
we are advised. We can allow ourselves to have a bad day, week, or month, and not condemn or judge ourselves for it. We can take
our deepest emotions, even the really negative ones, to the Lord in prayer. Right now, I am using the Scripture verse from Mark
chapter 4, when the waves were crashing over the boat and filling it with water, and the disciples woke Jesus up to tell him,
"Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" It was a harsh accusation, but it came from their genuine distress. Of course, we
know that Jesus always cares, but if it doesn't seem that way in the moment, we might as well tell him with all honesty and
boldness. I don't think it is rude or disrespectful to speak to him in this way given that the disciples already dished it out to him once
(and his response to them proved he can dish it right back!) Sometimes I think that unless we are being more direct with God, we
may not hear a more direct answer. In baseball, the faster the pitcher pitches, the farther the hitter can hit the ball. In your prayer,
you can throw God your best fastball right down the middle of the plate and see what he does with it.
In more mundane matters, the St. Patrick Fall Dinner looks like it will take on a more "virtual" approach. We will look forward to
doing an online silent auction and also a drawing for raffle winners as always, but it looks like the meal will not be able to be held. A
letter will be sent to parishioners with more details.
Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Nick

Creating Hope during COVID-19
Catholic Charities ministries continue
to be available both remotely and
in-person (by appointment only)
during the COIVD-19 pandemic. In fact, we are generally
able to assist people sooner, so if you have been thinking
about seeking counseling services, or seek legal advice from
an immigration attorney, now is a great time. Contact
Catholic Charities or visit their website to learn more about
our telehealth counseling services.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
Update as of July 28, 2020
The executive branch of the federal government has begun
a 'comprehensive review' of the DACA program with the
Department of Homeland security. While the program
undergoes this review, the DHS instituted interim changes
that go into effect immediately. As of today’s, date,
the DHS will NOT accept new DACA applications along with
other significant program changes. For more information
on this latest update, please visit our website to review the
accompanying DACA information sheet as well as relevant
memos. If you have further questions, please contact our
