Today is the first Sunday of Lent. Consider carefully that Jesus found Himself in the
wilderness. It became a place of merciless suffering with all the negativity which evil could
conjure. Have you ever been in the wilderness? It's a place of huge pain, grief and
depression. Jesus and the Holy Spirit were totally inseparable in the wilderness. We, too,
can be totally inseparable from the Holy Spirit if we care to pray and ask God's help at all
times, particularly during Lent. God is always with us. Prime time TV is playing an
advertisement of an impending visit by 10 Australian Tenors. In the T.V advertisement the
tenors are outstanding as they sing parts of Leonard Cohen's “Halleluiah”. Below, a verse
set to the Cohen melody of “Halleluiah”. It could be a Fridge Reflection For Lent, a
Reminder.
And He didn't falter in His walk, and He didn't stop to talk the talk
And yes, He walked the road ahead, alone.
With His faith in life and love of all, He went ahead to open the door
Now all we have to sing is Halleluiah, halleluiah, halleluiah,
halleluiah, halleluiah.
It can’t be me or us! It must be the ‘chosen’ people. The chosen
people are us, the poor, the weak, the ones who know it is only the
love and life of God that gives us strength and direction. In our
parish in our school, stand up and serve; pray and know that it is
the love of God and neighbour that makes us real and alive. Just
do it, is the call to everyone to be part of the Way of the Lord .

It is the “Year of Mercy”. To celebrate this special year, on Fridays, the main doors of Madonna Maria Church will be opened wide from 8am onwards. This will be an invitation to all – parents, students, parishioners – to come in and pray before school. After the Mass at 9.15am Rite 1 Reconciliation will be available for those who wish to go. We will display the school’s “Year of Mercy” banner outside the church so that all who pass by will realize that something special is happening in the Catholic Church this year. St John's College students have settled to work in the classroom and have also been involved in reflecting on goals for the year. The new intake of year 9 students received a powerful Powhiri and are receiving continued support and guidance to settle in on their journey to become a ‘St John’s man’. The Catholic Character Committee planned an Ash Wednesday Liturgy and a great celebration for our College’s Commissioning Mass on Friday. Some great results from our athletes were evident on Thursday when we held our Athletic day at the Sports Park. Keep us in your prayers as we journey through the 2016 school year.
Sacred Heart College News Principal: Steve Bryan Convent Rd, Napier, Ph 835 3761

On Friday we appointed our new student leaders for the year ahead at a Leadership Mass. May God guide them and keep them in His care. Tabloid Sports went off with a bang, a very enjoyable day had by all. All year 9, new students, and their families are invited to a BBQ on Tuesday 16 February 2016, 5pm – 7pm.

Book Rerview:
City of Joy - Dominique Lapierre
A story with a heart and showcases the true essence of love, caring and sharing in poverty. A beautiful and simple
read with many poignant, joyful and heart-rending moments. This is a famous book well worth reading, and we enter
the world of the poor in Calcutta, with all the heart break and unexpected humour and happiness, and the energy and
fulfilment of those who came to help.
