June 3rd , 2018 Blood of Christ

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Everyone contemplates capturing their landmark moments with something personal and meaningful which would remain forever as a memorable event. Neil Armstrong’s first words as he stepped onto the moon’s surface was “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” But Buzz Aldrin the NASA astronaut wanted to capture his small step by giving a spiritual dimension to it. Aldrin read from the Scripture: “I am the vine, you are the branches, he who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit.” Then silently he gave thanks for their successful journey to the moon and opened the tiny pyx which he had taken aboard the spacecraft, provided to him by his catholic pastor, and received Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, surrendering the moon to Jesus. What a holy and remarkable gesture and expression of love towards the Body and Blood of Christ! This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). In the celebration of the Eucharist, the glorified Christ becomes present under the appearance of bread and wine in a unique way. In the act of the prayer of consecration, at the anointed hands of a sacred Priest during the Eucharist, the “substance” of the bread and wine is changed by the Power of the Holy Spirit into the “substance” of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. This change is called “transubstantiation.” Thus in the Eucharist the bread ceases to be bread in substance, and becomes the Body of Christ, while the wine ceases to be wine in substance and becomes the Blood of Christ. The transformed bread and wine, that are the Body and Blood of Christ, are not merely symbols because they truly are the Body and Blood of Christ.
