We might reflect on the Eucharistic character of her actions of breaking and pouring and of Jesus’ assurance that what she has done will be told in memory of her. She did “what she could”. The story of her support for Jesus is sandwiched between two stories of opposition: an assassination plot on the part of the religious authorities, and the foreshadowing of Jesus' betrayal at the hands of a close follower. Status does not guarantee goodness or insight. As the story unfolds, we hear that, despite his earlier instruction to “stay awake”, Jesus' closest followers fall asleep when he most needs them. Worse than that, they betray, deny, and abandon him. Some Galilean women remain faithful. They have followed him and looked after him on the long journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. They become witnesses to his death and burial. These women will also discover the empty tomb and take the message of the resurrection to the male disciples. A foreign passer-by, Simon, whose sons are known to the Markan community, shoulders part of the burden. An ordinary Roman soldier realises and proclaims that Jesus is of God. The story has come full circle: the first verse of the gospel announced the beginning of the good news of Jesus, the Christ and the Son of God. Now the reader understands what it means to make such a proclamation. The final chapter is to be celebrated next weekend. The mystery is to be lived every day of every week. As we enter into the holiest week of the liturgical year, we might consider our call to bring the power of Christ’s redeeming love to those who suffer crucifixion in our own times: the more-than-human Earth community that suffers the effects of climate change; the desperate asylum seekers who remain on Manus Island and Nauru; the war-torn lands of Yemen and Syria… EASTER TRIDUUM 2018 HOLY THURSDAY 29 March Mass of the Lord's Supper: 7.30pm Sacred Heart Church GOOD FRIDAY 30 March Ecumenical Service: 9.30am St Kilda Baptist Church The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion: 3pm St Columba Church EASTER VIGIL 31 March 7.45pm Sacred Heart Church Welcome to all who celebrate the Eucharist with us today, to the church communities across our parish and a special welcome to all who happen to be visiting our Parish. ECUMENICAL LENTEN GATHERING Concluding Gathering. The retreat will conclude on the evening of Passion Sunday with a light meal and brief concluding prayer, which will be held at the St Kilda Baptist Church THIS Sunday 25 March at 6.00 p.m. This will be instead of our communal reconciliation service and will be a lovely opportunity to prepare our hearts for Easter. ALL ARE VERY WELCOME to attend even if you haven’t participated in other parts of the retreat.

CONGRATULATIONS CHRISTINE Big congratulations to Christine Mitchell who graduated last Friday with a Masters in Theological Studies. Christine completed her Masters in only 4 years during a very busy time for her and her family. We are blessed to have someone with Christine’s skills and knowledge.

WALK FOR JUSTICE FOR REFUGEES Please join us on Palm Sunday as we call on Australia’s political leaders to abandon the current harsh and unjust policies, and to provide permanent protection for these vulnerable people. Australia is responsible for these people. Instead of spending millions to prolong their despair, Australia should #BringThemHere and #LetThemStay. In this election year, let’s stand together with refugees. Give them Hope - not despair. End the Cruelty. Sunday 25 March, 2pm State Library. Music from 1.30pm, Speakers from 2pm, Walk at 2.45pm. Organised by the Refugee Advocacy Network.

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS Thank you very much to all our Easter choir members. They have rehearsed for the last 4 weeks and their commitment is greatly appreciated. Music at our Easter liturgies is always beautifully done and a fitting accompaniment to our touching liturgies.

“CALLED TO WELCOME & PROTECT” Pope Francis has challenged all of us with his action plan for Asylum Seekers and Refugees: to Welcome, to Protect, to Promote and to Integrate. Please join us on Palm Sunday, 25 March at 1pm for a Prayer Service at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Following the Liturgy, we will walk as one Faith Community (down Lonsdale street) to join the larger Public Rally (see below). We hope you will be able to join us.

TRIDUUM CHOIR PRACTICE We are well into our rehearsals, with only one more to go. The remaining practice is: Tuesday, 27 March at 7.30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church.

HOLY THURSDAY SERVICE We encourage all those intending to attend the Holy Thursday service “The Mass of The Lord’s Supper”, which will be held at Sacred Heart this year at 7.30pm, to bring a small cross with them. It could be a family cross or one that you pray with. We will carry our personal crosses in procession and lay them with the large cross during the Service. Jim Finlayson has made a batch of small crosses, for those who would like to carry one but do not have one. You are welcome to write your name on the cross and keep it after the service. Thank you Jim.

9AM SET UP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED One of our new 9am set up volunteers (amongst many other things he does for us) is moving out of the parish. We really need a couple of volunteers (works best in pairs) to volunteer for a monthly roster to set up and pack up for 9am Mass. Please speak to Christine if you can help out.

SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY A small group of parishioners regularly meets to share & reflect on the meaning of the Gospel in their lives and the life of the Parish and wider community.  The next meeting is THIS Monday 26 March, 7.30pm in the Parish House. Anyone is welcome to come along to a gathering & can contact Helen Freris through the parish office.

FAITH AND ENVIRONMENT Pope Francis said that “every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral – and not simply an economic – act.” World Vision in its 2015 report, Chocolate’s Bitter Taste, estimates that Australians spend up to $3 billion on chocolate a year, with sales peaking at Easter. Much of the chocolate we consume in Australia is made with cocoa beans picked by enslaved children, particularly in West Africa. You can make a difference to the world, and to the lives of these children, by buying only slavery-free chocolate. ACTION: Please buy and eat only slavery-free Easter eggs and chocolate this Easter? Look for one of these three symbols on the chocolate wrapper and make a difference.

ST COLUMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL It was another wonderful school assembly on Friday run by Will and Maggie. It included a thought provoking presentation on stereotypes and a fun look at the Gr 5/6 camp. We celebrated great student achievements in soccer, swimming & visual arts. Cultural Diversity Week was highlighted and included a beautiful rendition of ‘I Am Australian’ with Chris on the didgeridoo and guitar (at the same time!).

END OF DAYLIGHT SAVINGS Don’t forget that Daylight Savings finishes at 2.00am on Sunday 1 April. That means you get an extra hour of sleep on Easter Sunday morning.
