PASTOR’S NOTE
Come to the Feast!
This past week, parishioner Linda Atkins and I met with an Eagle Scout candidate who wants to do some landscaping upgrades at the Mother of Good Counsel campus for his Ea-gle Scout project. Upon going over the wish list of items for the project, I asked how the Eagle Scout was go-
ing to recruit volunteers to help him with the work. He simply said, “just provide some donuts and pizza and the volunteers will show up!”
We all love to eat and when we come around the table with family and friends we are fed and nourished, not just physically but emotionally, with friendship and love. Whenever we celebrate a big event, having food helps make the event extra special. Every time we attend a daily or Sunday Mass we are fed and nourished with the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
This weekend we celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday in Or-dinary Time. The readings this weekend proclaim that God will always sustain us with food and love.
In the first reading from Isaiah, we read how a prophet invites us to enjoy all the good things at a banquet of the Lord. He invites people to draw closer to God by inviting the hungry, thirsty, and the poor to the table of plenty where all will be satisfied. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read the famous passage of the multiplication of loaves and fishes. This passage reading is the only miracle found in all four gospels. God invites all who are spiritual-ly hungry and thirsty to come to him and be satisfied.
Come to the Feast!
Parish Improvements
The Diocese has granted us permission to repair St. Bede School Roof. Schultheis Roofing is due to begin work on the repairs the next few weeks. Funds from the school account will be used for this much needed project. John Buch Electric replaced the outdated circuit breaker box inside the Mother of Good Counsel sacristy. They installed new light switches to make it easier to turn on and off the lights. K & L Builders of Export continues to make upgrades on the second floor living area at St. James Rectory. Upon completion, Fr. Matt Hawkins will be living at the rectory with me. Fr. Taylor continues to live at Holy Rosary Rec-tory and Fr. James and Fr. Augustine continue to live at St. Bede. **We appreciate your continued financial support to St. Mary Magdalene Parish. It is important to use the parish envelopes or participate with the on-line giving so we can continue with the various upgrades at our campuses. Also, since all the former parish checking accounts have
now been merged or closed into one checking account, please remember to make all checks payable to St. Mary Magdalene Parish**

By all accounts, the revitalization of parish life and the re-evangelization of Catholics and the new evangelization of the secular world in the 21st century will require, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, that we are successful in fostering a sense of community among our people. This will be true for a per-sonal parish, such as St. Benedict the Moor as well as for a more traditional territorial parish, such as St. Mary Magdalene.
Fostering a sense of community will rely on at least two things: the fundamental principle of Catholic social teach-ing of “participation” and the practice of “Synodality”. You may ask: what is Synodality?
Synodality is a concept that is at once old and new. It is old because it characterized the nature of the early Christian Church for her first 1,000 years. It is new be-cause it has been revived in the documents of Vatican II as that ecumenical council examined the long-overdue question of what it actually means to be a “church”. In a real sense, as Jesus said in our Gospel reading last week: “Every scribe who has been instructed in the King-dom of Heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” The concept of Synodality is just such a treasure from that storeroom.
I will have more to say about this next week and in the weeks ahead but for now, a simple definition of Synodali-ty will do. Synodality means that as the body of Christ, clergy, laity, and the religious, we walk forward together. While the ordained clergy have a distinctive role to play in the life of the church, through baptism, we all share in the priestly mission and ministry of the Church and we must participate and be involved in pastoral planning in ways that are appropriate to our charism and office with-in the structure of the Church. More about this next week.
Fr. Matthew Hawkins
When I was growing up in South-ern Ohio, my family faced many economic challenges. There were many times that we had to de-pend upon the generosity of oth-ers, including our parish to help us along the way. We were never ashamed to ask for help. for our faith showed us that sharing and caring had to be a way of
life. Later, as things got better we were able to help oth-ers. On several occasions we took families in to be with us temporarily as they were destitute. We never forgot that, but for God's grace, we could be without food or shelter.
In today's gospel, the disciples want to send the people away to feed themselves. But Jesus knew this was not necessary. He said feed them yourselves. We often refer those in need to the Church or other agencies even though we could easily afford to be generous and pro-vide for their needs. We indeed represent the church and in some instances are the best first responders.
During these difficult times of the pandemic, large num-bers of people are unemployed and many are facing eviction from where they live. This often involves fami-lies. While this is an issue of national proportion, we can indeed help on a local level. This is indeed a matter of prayer and action.
Together we can do a lot. Fr. David Taylor
Reflections
In solidarity with the Church in Japan, let us pray with the words that Pope St. John Paul II shared at the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima on February 25, 1981.
To the Creator of nature and humanity, of truth and beauty I pray:
Hear my voice, for it is the voice of the victims of all wars and violence among individuals and nations;
Hear my voice, for it is the voice of all children who suffer and will suffer when people put their faith in weapons and war;
Hear my voice when I beg you to instill into the hearts of all human beings the wisdom of peace, the strength of justice and the joy of fellowship;
Hear my voice, for I speak for the multitudes in every country and in every period of history who do not want war and are ready to walk the road of peace;
Hear my voice and grant insight and strength so that we may always respond to hatred with love, to injustice with total dedication to justice, to need with the sharing of self, to war with peace.
O God, hear my voice and grant unto the world your everlasting peace.

On August 6 and 9, 2020, the world will mark the 75th Anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, where atomic weapons caused untold death and suffering. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on International Justice and Peace calls on Catholics in the U.S. to renew their commitment to pray and work for an end to nuclear weapons.
