NOVEMBER 9, 2014 — THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA 3
Briefs from Father McMahon
Today is yet another “departure” from the predictable “lock step” of Ordinary Time. Today’s feast celebrates the dedication of the Lateran Basilica of St. John –the cathedral (or chair- church) for the Bishop of Rome, The Pope. In celebrating this feast we are celebrating in a real sense the official “arrival” of Christianity and its acceptance in the Roman world-no small accomplishment for certain! The Basilica- a large public building-was built by a wealthy Roman family and donated for Christian use with the approval and blessings of the Roman Emperor Constantine who made Christianity legal in 312 A.D. by imperial decree in the Edict of Milan. The Office of Readings for this feast has writings from Saint Ceasarius of Arles, an early Church father. Readings from the Divine Office usually include writings from the early patristic lessons and traditions that are written to spiritually assist the faithful (particularly the religious men, women and those in the clerical state.) Also, any number of laypersons regularly pray the Divine Office for its spiritual benefits. With that preamble, it is interesting to examine the words of St. Ceasarius of Arles (Gaul-ancient France) inspired by this feast: “…Whenever we come to church, we must prepare our hearts to be beautiful as we expect this church to be beautiful. Do we wish to find this basilica immaculately clean? Then do not soil your soul with the filth of sin. Do you wish to this basilica to be full of light? God too wishes that your soul be not in darkness, but that the light of good works shine in us.” The psalmist speaks of “zeal” for the House of the Lord. I think it is most interesting that we celebrate this feast on a Sunday this year when we are preparing to welcome our new Archbishop Blase Cupich. In a very real sense, then, this feast is a celebration of our own life and the Life we receive from God through the church. We are all called to renewed zeal that will also touch us as well if we are willing. What is crucial for us is to understand that we are all called to be Temples of the Holy Spirit through Baptism. Our actions should always reflect our fullest identity in the eyes of God. Maybe it’s time for all of us to take a look at what CONSUMES us and gets our full attention. Is it zeal for the “House of the Lord”? N.B. (Your priority check is still in process. What will it be worth when the time comes to cash it in?). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I want to thank all our faithful parishioners who have pledged so generously to the TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS campaign and our continuing to donate their pledge amounts. Thanks to all those who have added money to their campaign pledges. If you have not as yet made a pledge or gift, I urge you to join your fellow parishioners in doing so. This parish can only work with the cooperation and participation of everyone. We are not just school, or religious ed., single, widowed, retired or “snowbird” - we are “living stones” of a living church parish, St. Peter Catholic Church, Antioch, Illinois. I am asking for EVERONE”S participation. Let’s continue our good work and share the Good News! Whether we are St. John Lateran or St. Peter, Antioch we are all signs of God’s living presence. Let us also be signs of God’s generous love for other.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR ‘SUPERHEROES’ WHO HELPED TO MAKE FOOTLIGHTS A SUCCESS! THANK-YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND ONGOING SUPPORT OF OUR PARISH FUNDRAISING EVENTS.

FUTURE REPAIRS TO THE CHURCH AND RECTORY
As we have mentioned during the campaign, there will be repairs needed to the interior of the Church and other work related to the weather proofing of the Church and Rectory. The following projects are tentatively scheduled for the spring/summer of 2015, dependent on raising sufficient funds through the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. This schedule assumes we will not have any major emergency repairs during winter. REPAIR PROJECTED COST Church interior----ceiling, front/back walls, side walls $60,000.00 Church exterior--- tuck pointing north and south walls $59,000.00 Rectory exterior-- tuck pointing all exterior walls $11,000.00 Other major projects, such as tuck pointing the exterior east and west walls of the Church, tuck pointing the bell tower and replacing the heat/air exhaust units in the gym are potential 2016 concerns unless they become emergency re-pair items before then. The projected costs for these 2016 items appears to be in excess of an additional $200,000.00. To meet these projected costs, St. Peter Parish needs the financial help of every member of our parish family. At the present time we have $850,921.00 promised in pledges. We have already collected and spent $447,000.00 of the pledged amount for the Church/ Rectory roofs. Our goal for the Archdiocesan religious education and formation fund is $372,000.00. We will not have sufficient funds from the campaign to complete the projects unless: --- Parishioners who have made pledges make every effort to complete their pledge, and --- Parishioners who have not contributed to the campaign will recognize the need to help carry a share of the financial burden and make a pledge. Together, we are St. Peter Parish. Thank you and God bless!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For several weeks, we have considered penance as a sacrament of forgiveness, and yet there are two other sacraments in this category. The first, of course, is the Eucharist itself. The other is the sacrament of the sick, long associated with penance. The Letter of James sets out the deep tradition for caring for the sick: sending for the priests, who will pray and lay their hands on the sick ones, anointing them with oil, and giving them forgiveness. Long be-fore other rites of penance developed, the sacrament of the sick was therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus often healed the sick, nearly always as a visible sign of forgiveness of sin. The tradition didn’t unfold smoothly, however, and within a few cen-turies the oil of the sick was taken home to be applied by caregivers as a salve, or even to be drunk as a medicine. As early as the second century, bishops were therefore urging that priests should be the ones to visit those separated by illness from the Sunday assembly. Thus the practice of consigning the Eucharist and the oil of the sick to the non-ordained faithful to bring home was relatively short-lived.
