Today’s Readings
From Father Thom Miller
The Mission of My Life -
taken from St. John Henry
Newman
God has created me to do Him some definite
service. He has committed some work to me
which He has not committed to another. I
have my mission. I may never know it in this
life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link
in a chain, a bond of connection between
persons. He has not created me for naught. I
shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be an
angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own
place, while not intending it if I do but keep
His commandments. Therefore, I will trust
Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown
away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may
serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may
serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may
serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows
what He is about. He may take away my
friends. He may throw me among strangers.
He may make me feel desolate, make my
spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He
knows what He is about.

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
You may all be aware that Bishop David Zubik has created a ‘team ministry’ concept in our
Monroeville, Pitcairn, Penn Hills Parish. In mid-December we were given the name pulling
5 parishes, {6 churches} together to now be known as CHRIST THE DIVINE SHEPHERD
PARISH. What a unique name which calls us to be under the Divine Shepherd, who
watches over, protects, leads, and comforts each of us as individuals within the parish as a shepherd does
his sheep, and with the DIVINE GRACE OF CHRIST.
Within the team ministry we are privileged to have assigned here Fr. Larry Adams, Fr. Thom Miller, and Fr. Al
Zapf, as the team, and Fr. Rick Thompson as the chaplain for Forbes Regional and UPMC East Hospitals. We
are also fortunate to have Fr. Faustine Faraha who is a student priest from Tanzania living at St.
Bartholomew. Also we have 2 deacons, Deacon Mike Kelly, and Deacon Rick Tucek who do ministry of
service at the parish. Each of us is concerned with the welfare of the souls of the parish.
Every priest has his individual gifts, unique from each other’s, but united to make the whole parish grow and
be a beacon of light of faith to welcome others to a deeper relationship with the Lord.
The bishop has determined that Fr. Al Zapf is moderator of the team ministry, and he will be installed as
such Saturday, February 15, 2020, at 5 pm Mass at St. Bernadette Church. All are welcome. As Moderator, it
will be his duty to make sure the priests, deacons, and staff will carry out their roles, as well as support one
another. He also is the one who is notified by the bishop’s office of important events coming to the parish,
such as this Installation, or the date of Confirmation. In turn, Fr. Al discusses the information with the team.
As a team, the priests look at the important aspects of the parish, such as staff realignment, mass schedules,
Lenten services, future of buildings of the parish, and to a degree, the finances and day to day operations
which are necessary.
So, please remember our TEAM, and other staff members in your prayers as we continue ON MISSION FOR
THE CHURCH ALIVE at CHRIST THE DIVINE SHEPHERD PARISH. We will also keep you in our prayers.
Logo Contest
Calling all artists and graphic designers! We are having a contest to design our new Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish logo. Parishioners should submit their entries by Monday, February 17, 2020 to the parish offices or by email to [email protected]. Once we receive the entries they will be placed online and in the bulletin for
everyone to vote on the one that best represents our Catholic Community. Stay tuned to the bulletin and website for more information.
