February 28, 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
Happy Third Week of Lent! I hope it is going well.
The entire parish has just received a mailing announcing a series of receptions inviting you to hear about the Archdiocesan Capital Campaign entitled, “We Are Living Stones.” I am hoping that you read it because it came from our parish.
Allow me to repeat what you read and what this Campaign is about. It is about firming up our Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Newark and here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Our parish is being asked to achieve a goal of $772,000.
If successful, the results will be divided as follows: $68,000 will go for Archdiocesan Works of Mercy. This will replace the usual Archbishop’s Annual Appeal in 2016. All further gifts will be divided 50/50 between the Archdiocese and our own parish. We can hope to see $352,000 returned to us, which will be split again between the Academy and the parish itself.
The receptions are being held to tell the story in more detail and to answer any questions. We are hosting three receptions next month:
• March 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium • March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium • March 15 at 1:00 p.m. in the Titus Room
Our next Archbishop, Bernard Hebda, will be present for the gathering on March 14.
You might well have opinions to go along with your questions – bring them both to one of the receptions. We welcome hearing both anytime.
Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
fr. Dan [email protected] Campaign Committee:
Chris Connolly, Carol Loman, Deacon David Loman, Rosemary Russell, and Benedetta Watros

CONFIRMATION
There is a Confirmation Session this Sunday, February 28th.
Remaining Sessions: March 13th and April 3rd from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the Parish Auditorium.

First Eucharist Preparation Day will be held on Saturday, March 12th from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. This is a fun, faith-filled day with activities for children who are preparing for First Eucharist this year! See you then!
The RCIA process is concerned with the total formation of the person into believing with the Church community (doctrinal information), living with the Church community (practical information), praying with the Church community (liturgical information), and serving with the Church community (apostolic formation). This gradual development culminates in the celebration of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at Easter time. The Church welcomes into the process of preparation persons who have never been baptized, those already baptized in another Christian tradition, or baptized Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation.
If you or someone you know has been thinking about becoming a member, but would first like information about the process, please call Sr. Regina at 201-871-4662. Pamphlets are also available in the church.

Today’s Gospel – Luke 13:1-9
During Jesus’ time some people believed that people suffered because they sinned. In today’s Gospel Jesus explains that this is not true. He says that it’s because of the injustice in the world. The story about the fig tree reminds us that God gives us another chance, but it is important that we change our lives in order to make the world a better

OFFICE OF CONCERN FOOD PANTRY
Eleven years ago, the volunteers at the Office of Concern Food Pantry in Englewood, dedicated to serving the needy in Bergen County, began a very special program. “Sharing Breakfast with the Needy” is a program to donate breakfast cereal to the poor in the midst of the Lenten season.
Families in the Religious Education Program are asked to help with this cause. Cereal can be brought when students attend Religious Education class or anytime during the week. Thank you for your generosity!

A note of thanks from Sr. Mary Doris, O.P., Director of Siena House…
Dear Father O’Neill:
As we begin this New Year of 2016, and on behalf of the Staff, women and children of Siena House, I want to express our deep gratitude to you and the Parish of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel for the generosity and caring shown to our young mothers and babies of Siena House at Christmas time.
The outpouring of love displayed in the beautiful Gifts from the Giving Tree, which were received in time for our Christmas Party, brought smiles and expressions of gratitude from all gathered.
May God bless you abundantly, and all the families of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish for their continued support of our ministry over the years. We are grateful to Jennifer Schippert and all the ladies of the Siena House Ministry Group for all their efforts throughout the year.
We pray that the New Year will bring abundant blessings upon you and your Parish and may we all continue to place our Hope in the assurance of Emmanuel – God with Us!

WEEKLY RUNDOWN
Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us to be merciful. We pray that this Jubilee Year of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord. As Catholics, we can show love and mercy for others through the “Corporal Works of Mercy.”
Feed the hungry. Give drink to the thirsty.
Clothe the naked. Welcome the stranger.
Visit the sick. Visit the imprisoned.
Bury the dead.
Are You Being Called to Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual Direction encourages us to explore a closer relationship with God. In the midst of a busy life, many of us find it difficult to notice God’s action in our daily affairs. Yet, at the deepest level, all of us long for a more conscious experience of God’s presence and love. It’s really not about being directed. Rather, it is very much about being encouraged to draw closer to God. Spiritual Direction is carried out in the context of a one-to-one trusting and confidential relationship. The spiritual director is trained to be a guide who journeys with you and listens to your story with an ear for the movement of the Holy Spirit. If you think that Spiritual Direction might be a way for you to discern God’s actions in your life, contact Deacon Lex at 201-568-6819 or [email protected].
MEN’S CORNERSTONE The Men’s Cornerstone group will be meeting on March 9th and March 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Closter. Come for the coffee and stay for the sharing of faith and fun! Please call Michael Giuliano at 201-983-1591 or Bill Angresano at 201-370-2698 if you have any questions. All are welcome!
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Friday, March 4th
Be one with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration on the first Friday of each month beginning at 9:00 a.m. and concluding with Benediction at 3:00 p.m.
“Blessed be God. Blessed be His Holy Name.”
Next weekend is the Peter’s Pence Collection which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
December 8, 2015 – November 20, 2016
Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness
only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all
by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world,
its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness
in order that they may feel compassion
for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after,
loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be
a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm,
may bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of
Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Dear Fr. Daniel and Parishioners,
My most sincere thanks!
I am aware of your tremendously generous gift of $3,820.00 to the Carmelite Missions and I am profoundly grateful.
Your goodness will allow our missionaries in Peru, Mexico, El Salvador and many other parts of the underdeveloped world to touch the pain of the desperately poor people they are called to serve.
In these days of Lent, dear friends, may you have peace, a great and deep peace, filled with blessing and holiness!
A note of thanks from Fr. Joseph P. O’Brien, O.Carm., Director of Carmelite Missions…
