WELCOME

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel,

Thanks for your generous support of the Trinidad family. We received $4,673 in the spontaneous second collection we had last weekend. Many, many thanks.

In one week we will have our second opportunity to host homeless families in cooperation with the Family Promise program. This year we will meet three families. As we know, it takes a village to accomplish the many spiritual and corporal works of mercy. The Family Promise model surely illustrates that.

Some of us will cook, some of us will entertain, and some of us will sleep over each night in order to ensure security. Thanks to everyone who has stepped up already and to Elliot for coordinating our entire response. I consider our participation in this program a privileged week of grace. Thank you for making it happen.

Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel,

fr. Dan [email protected]

TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, July 22nd

Mark 6:30-34 “When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.”

“Jesus plans to take [his disciples] to a deserted place so they can rest and recharge, but people from ‘all the towns’ hurry and get there first. Jesus must have realized that this would naturally happen if people were receptive to his disciples, so now he shows his disciples the responsibility they must have to the people they attract. They cannot flee from their followers; indeed…they must serve them.”

WEEKLYRUNDOWN

Homeless Family Program Hosted by OLMC

July 29 – August 5, 2018

Last year fr. Dan challenged us in the spirit of Pope Francis’ call to “Open the doors of mercy!” After working for two years and a successful inaugural run last summer, a new opportunity has arrived!

The OLMC community will open her doors to working homeless families from July 29th through August 5th, 2018 as part of the temporary housing program run by Family Promise of Bergen County.

A mom with a three-month boy and 10-year old daughter and a mom with two boys, ages three and six, will be staying in our Academy for a week. We will provide shelter, dinner, breakfast and supply lunch. The families only eat and sleep here during the evening hours; during the day they work and their children attend daycare and summer camp.

There are many ways to help! Please see “Ways To Help” on this page and continue reading below.

Volunteer Shifts of volunteers are required to cook and serve dinner in the evening. We can also use volunteers in the morning to set up for breakfast. At least two volunteers must stay overnight as per Family Promise regulations. Fr. Dan, Ed McElroy and I have already taken three of the seven nights.

Donate We will need to fill our pantry with items for the families, such as luncheon meats, snacks and more. Also, while Family Promise provides beds, we will need gently used or new linens and new toiletries.

Pray Please offer up the volunteers, organizers and families in your prayers leading up to and during the time of service that the Spirit of God fosters within us a successful event. We understand that people travel during the summer and, if you are, we hope you enjoy your rest and ask that you continue to pray for us.

May OLMC continue to be a place that “No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done, no matter where you’re from, no matter where you’re going, no matter how good or bad things seem, you are always welcome.”

SEVEN THEMES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. The following themes are at the heart of Catholic social teaching:

1. Life and dignity of the human person 2. Call to family, community, and participation 3. Rights and responsibilities 4. Option for the poor and vulnerable 5. The dignity of work and the rights of workers 6. Solidarity 7. Care for God’s creation Source: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops www.usccb.org

Prayer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel

O Most Holy Mary of Mount Carmel, pray for me.

You watch over those who follow the Gospel of your Son with a mother’s loving care.

Look now upon me and cover me with the embrace of your special protection.

Strengthen me when I am weak. Enlighten the darkness of my mind

with your wisdom. Increase in me the virtues of

faith, hope and charity. As you fulfilled all of our hopes and dreams

as members of the Church, help me now to show forth the love of

Jesus in my life. O Mother of Carmel,

Comfort and protect me all the days of my life. Amen.

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel gives us an opportunity to show our love and gratitude to Mary for her continued guidance and protection. We will be praying this special prayer for nine consecutive days from July 14th through July 22nd.

Why do Catholics pray?

We pray to bond with God, whether to praise him, to ask forgiveness for our sins, to thank him, or to ask him for help. Prayer is our connection to God, who created us and wants to have a relationship with us. Our prayer is always a response to God’s invitation: “Whether we realize it or not, prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for him. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2560).

“God speaks in the silence of the heart. Listening is the beginning of prayer.”

—Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Feast Day: July 26

The gospels tell us nothing about Mary’s parents, not even their names. What we know from Christian tradition is found in non-scriptural writings such as the Protogospel of James. Devotion to St. Anne existed in sixth-century Constantinople and in eighth-century Rome. By the sixteenth century this feast day was universal. Joachim has been honored in the East from the earliest days, but in the West only since the sixteenth century. May we imitate their example as loving parents and do all we can so that children might flourish as Mary did.

Source: Living With Christ, July 2018 “Lord Jesus, you were born of the Virgin Mary, the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne. Look with love on grandparents the world over. Protect them! They are a source of enrichment for families, for the Church, and for all of society. Support them! Lord, Jesus, help families and society to value the presence and roles of grandparents. May they never be ignored or excluded, but always encounter respect and love. Amen.”

—Pope Benedict XVI

MASS IN HONOR OF ST. ANNE – There will be a Mass in honor of St. Anne celebrated at St. Nicholas Church, 442 East Brinkerhoff Avenue, Palisades Park on Thursday, July 26 at 8 AM. A holy relic of the saint will be venerated immediately following the Mass. All are invited to attend. For more information, please the rectory office at 201-944-1154.
