You’re Invited!

The Pastoral Parish Council, along with many committed volunteers, worked diligently to find out what our parish is most interested in doing as a community during Lent, and the resounding result is the desire for small group study. For this Lenten season, we would like to invite you to join one of the study groups now forming— or you are welcome to gather people you already know and begin a small group of your own. The sign-up sheets are on the table in the back of the church. The resource we pre-selected for everyone is titled, Amazed & Afraid from The WORD Among Us Press. The WORD describes their resource as, “The sto-ries and questions in this book will help you get to know Jesus yourself…you’ll see what He did, hear what He said, and meet the riveting characters who chose to fol-low Him. Whether you’re someone who has never met Jesus before in any meaning-ful way or someone who attends church regularly, reading and discussing these sto-ries of Jesus and His followers will help you make your own decision about who He is and what that means for you.” Each small group is responsible for ordering their own books priced at $10. You can order online at https://bookstore.wau.org/Amazed-And-Afraid-Discover-the-Power-of-Jesus-P306.aspx. What is so beneficial about a small group? I personally find small group study is one of the ways where I grow deepest in Jesus, in my understanding of myself and in my knowledge in a multifaceted way. A small group experience I had in the past was from a large classroom filled with seminarians and religious men and women. Halfway through the first lecture, we were instructed to call out numbers from one thru seven. It was a way of dividing us into small discussion groups that would meet in the dining room with round tables. Prompting questions helped launch fruitful discussions. All students were well-read, but it was in the nuances, the bits we needed to share in a small setting that we all enjoyed so much. It was in those shared life experiences relating to the lecture that transformed our understanding of the study and those in the small group. It was the gathering at the table with the many diverse rays of grace which led us to expand on the relevance of everyday life experiences.

Small group study nourishes and helps us find the meaning in our life. Small group study helps us be accountable in what Jesus is inviting us to do for ourselves and for one another. Small group study also keeps us accountable by putting time aside with those who have also committed themselves. Small group study is a great way to meet other faith filled people on their journey. Small group study encourages real-life application of the Gospel. Small group study is a place we learn from one another and which fosters close relationships. Small group study promotes God moments and we learn who we are as His disciples. Small group study provides a safe place to share our belief in God. Small group study develops a personal and communal prayer life. Small group study is a place of encouragement. Small groups study can be done anywhere: at home, a community meeting room, a library, etc.

We hope you join us in this opportunity for our church to come together in community. It is our prayer that the faith, knowledge and blessings built together in the small groups radiate throughout our parish on our journey to Easter and beyond.

ENCOUNTER LENT

Join our faith community—and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States—in a life-changing Lenten journey of en-counter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your fami-ly’s CRS Rice Bowl in church after Ash Wednesday. During the 40 days of Lent, as companions on the journey, we will encounter our neighbor.

Ash Wednesday Announcement This year, the largely secular celebration of Val-entine's Day (February 14) coincides with Ash Wednesday and some have inquired if a dispen-sation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat will be given. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance, as is evi-dent by the large number of church goers on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the obligation of fast and abstinence must natu-rally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine's Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally festive time before beginning our Lenten observance.

SN Sharing Ministry Along with the generous donations of food from our parish-ioners, the clients of our food pantries also enjoy receiving both full- and travel-size toiletries—shampoos and condition-ers, body washes, body lotions (especially, at this time of year, creams and lotions for dry skin), mouth washes, hand creams and lotions, etc. For many patrons of the pantries, these are luxury items. As always, we send all the pantries lots of cereals and canned goods, cleaning supplies, and paper products. Your support is deeply appreciated.

SPECIAL MEETING FOR SUMMER SERVICE PROJECTS February 15, 2018 - 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

ST. NORBERT CHURCH Please join us for this very important informational meeting regarding our summer service projects! Teen Service Week and Habitat for Humanity will be presented, two wonderful opportunities to help those less fortunate than us. Read on for more information about the various trips, and then attend the meeting on February 15 from 7:00 to 8:00 in St. Norbert Church to hear more about these summer service trips, to meet people who went last year, and to get information about Applications and Permission Slips. Please “Join” the event post in our Facebook Group so we know who will be attending the meeting. Feel free to e-mail [email protected] or text/call Maggie at 847-687-7696 if you have questions; otherwise, just attend the meeting and get your questions answered there.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY 2018 TRIPS July 9-July 14 & July 23-July 28 SNYM will be working for Habitat for Humanity on two separate week-long trips this year. Week 1, July 9 through July 14, we will be returning to Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity in Iowa City, IA; and Week 2, July 23 through July 28, we will be returning to Cedar Valley Habitat For Humanity in Cedar Rapids, IA. Both are excel-lent service trips that provide a wonderful mix of hard work, prayer, recreation, and friendship building. No construction experience is necessary, and teens who have attended at least one year of high school can apply to participate in this week-long service trip. The Habitat team has foremen who instruct us in the trade. We need hardworking and enthusiastic teens who want to make a difference! Attend the meeting on February 15 to get more specific details and to get information about Applications/Permission Slips for Habitat 2018. Priority for the choice of which week will be given to the most active participants in the Youth Ministry and to St. Norbert Parishioners.

TEEN SERVICE WEEK June 23-June 29, 2018

Every summer for more than 25 years, churches all over the Chicagoland area have been getting together to plan a week-long service project that serves the needy in city shelters and social service agencies. It is a blessing St. Norbert teens will get the chance to join forces with over 30 other teens to effect changes in poverty by helping at places such as The Port, The Sisters Of St. Casimir, and A Safe Haven. We will touch upon the wonderful opportunity that TSW offers at our Special Meeting For Summer Service Projects on February 15; but in the meantime if you want to learn more about Teen Service Week, go to their awe-some website and look around:

http://teenserviceweek.blogspot.com/ Applications can be accessed at this website, and 2018 updated forms will be posted soon.

(formerly Christ Renews His Parish) is Calling YOU by Name

What Are You Looking For? This is the question Jesus asked of his first followers. Ladies, do you sense that something is missing in your life? Do you feel that if you weren't so busy you would be happier, healthier, more effective, more fulfilled, and may-be even a better person? If you answered yes to any of the above, maybe God is trying to tell you something? "Welcome" is an incredible weekend that will help you examine and grow your spiritual life. Would you like to be closer to Jesus? He's closer than you may think! Forms are available in the back of church. Look for the green "Welcome" logo. Or, we'll send them to you by email. If you would like more info before signing up, contact Bever-ley Great at [email protected] or Dale Duda at [email protected]. Mark your calendar for February 24-25, 8AM Saturday - 3PM Sunday, Techny Towers. Cost is $150 and includes meals and private room and bath.

This beautiful building is the home of the School Sisters of St. Francis, who have been teachers for a long time in our area. We will tour the 100-year-old Chapel, visit the Alfons Art Gallery and have lunch with the Sisters. The date of the trip is April 16, but we are hoping for reservations by mid-February. The fee is $35, includ-ing bus, tour & lunch. Please plan to join us! Open to all. Forms in the back of both churches.

Senior Club Breakfast

“Laughter!” Monday, Feb. 19 at 9am at OLB

Sherry Avila will engage you in a Laughter presentation that combines prolonged un-conditional laughter with breathing, movement, and a child-like playfulness. Laughter is a unique concept where you do not need to have a sense of humor, to tell or listen to jokes, be funny, or be a comedian to participate. Sherry’s Laughter presentation combines laughter exercises with breathing, bringing more oxygen to the body and brain so that you feel more energetic and healthy. Laughter Benefits include: • Helping in healing different diseases like depression, heart disease, hypertension, aches & pains, insom-

nia, arthritis, diabetes, etc. • Helping you unwind from the negative effects of stress. • Releasing endorphins that create a positive state of mind and boost optimism, self confidence and feel-

ings of self worth Join us at Our Lady of the Brook for a wonderful breakfast, provided by the Northbrook Women’s Council, followed by Sherry’s presentation. All are welcome. Please RSVP by FEB. 12 so that we prepare enough for all! [email protected] or (847) 513-6708. In addition, an officer from the NB Police Department will give a 5-10 minute presentation at 9:30 am on Crimes against Seniors in Northbrook. Don’t miss it!

Chili Supper Thanks!

The Our Lady of the Brook Women’s Club celebrated their 10th Annual Chili Supper in the social area on Saturday, February 3. Eighteen types of chili were provided by vol-unteers from the Women’s Club, their families and staff. Mark Spina provided the needed set up and seating for over 200 people. Homemade desserts, cornbread and condiments added to the flavors! Music from the Pfing-ston Trio provided a festive atmosphere and members of the community also stepped up to the open mike to en-tertain. Children’s games and fun prizes provided excite-ment for the children along with a 50/50 raffle for the adults! Congratulations to Debbie Rodonich (daughter of Jack and Millicent Sawyer) who won the coveted cash prize (and generously donated it back to the Women’s Club). Thanks to Amy Principi (our Communications Manager) who sold tickets all evening. Finally, thanks to all from the Catholic Community of Northbrook who supported the fun event. The OLB Women’s Club Mission is to encourage spiritual growth of its members, create opportunities to grow in friendship and provide financial assistance to the Parish. At the end of the year 10% of all funds are donated to outside chari-ties and the remainder goes to the Parish. Bottom: The Pfingsten Trio lead the music (Fr. Kalas, Jim Kritek

and Greg Valos). Top: raffle winner Debbie Rodonich

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s Gospel centers on the plight of a leper and Jesus’ response of healing. In Hawaii, the bacterium that causes leprosy probably entered from China in the mid-1800s, and the native islanders were susceptible to the dreaded disease. In 1866, the government literally dumped the sufferers on a remote and virtually inaccessi-ble island peninsula with towering cliffs. Thrown off ships into the sea, the sick people were told to swim for the beach and head for caves, and for seven years the only supplies were similarly cast into the sea to drift ashore. It was then, in 1873, that a thirty-three-year-old Belgian priest, Damien de Veuster, went voluntarily to Kalaupapa. Before long, he cajoled the government into funding his mission and its hospital, built a village with proper homes and sanitation, and recruited Mother Marianne Cope to bring sisters from Syracuse, New York, to nurse the sick. Damien, who eventually died of leprosy, has been canon-ized, and Mother Marianne as well. Although leprosy has been curable since the 1940s, today a few patients remain in their lifelong home, now a national historic site. The peninsula is still utterly iso-lated from the outside world, and the speed limit for the few cars there is 5 mph since there’s nowhere to go! The hospital is still well-staffed and equipped, but access is

regulated and visitors must take an official tour, of-ten involving a descent down the cliffs by “Molakai mule.” There are few places on earth that evoke the healing power of Jesus, or our call to follow the Healer, more than Damien’s beloved island mission. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
